A Message from
Foundation Leadership
To our Alumni and Friends:
Thank you for supporting Cleveland State University. The message is not
new; we say these words every time you make a pledge, cash gift or other
commitment to the University and its students.
But this year the CSU Foundation proudly conveyed this sentiment by
establishing Donor Recognition Societies. Our new President’s Cabinet,
President’s Circle, Honors Circle and Scholars Circle recognize donors for their
lifetime gifts, while our Legacy Society (formerly the C.V. Thomas Society)
continues to recognize donors for planned and estate gifts. A small gesture,
yes; but one that we hope truly conveys to our most valued donors just how
much you are appreciated.
Thanks to your investment, both CSU and the CSU Foundation are thriving.
In fiscal year 2013, funds under investment grew to $61.7 million, the
highest total ever, while our portfolio experienced a favorable 13.8 percent
return. These results placed us in the top 25th percentile of educational and
foundation endowments in the $50 million to $250 million range.
Private gifts truly are investments. By helping students realize their dream of
a college degree, you are providing a pathway for young intellectual capital in
Cleveland to learn, grow, and thrive.
Thank you again for your investment in Cleveland State University and its
students. We are honored to serve as stewards of the gifts you have entrusted
to us. We welcome your continued support as CSU celebrates its rich past and
vibrant future during its 50th anniversary year.

DONOR PROFILE
Thanks to a $10 million gift
from Don and Pam Washkewicz and
the Parker Hannifin Foundation,
engineering at Cleveland State will
be transformed into a powerhouse of innovation and
opportunity for students and faculty. Their gift, equaling
the largest ever in University history and by far the largest
for the engineering program, will place CSU at the
forefront of engineering education and research.
In honor of the transformative gift, the CSU Board
of Trustees voted to rename Fenn College the
Washkewicz College of Engineering, and to rename
the engineering building Fenn Hall.
Alumnus Washkewicz, who earned a bachelor’s
degree in mechanical engineering, is chairman of the
board, chief executive officer and president of Parker
Hannifin Corporation.
This gift will facilitate major
improvements to Fenn Hall, including
two unique spaces – a Learning
Incubator for Undergraduate Education
and a Laboratory for Research and Innovation. It
also will provide scholarships and foster an academic
environment that promotes innovation, discovery,
entrepreneurship and industry collaboration.
Students will work on their own innovations and learn
the economic, social, environmental and international
context of engineering. Interdisciplinary research
will flourish in the College’s biomedical, chemical,
environmental, materials, robotics, mechanical and
computer engineering programs. Even students in
the arts, business and sciences will be encouraged to
become involved in design and innovation.
Through their generosity, Don, Pam and the Foundation
are helping to ensure that CSU graduates are ready for
the jobs and leadership positions of tomorrow.

RADIANCE: CSU REALIZING
THE PROMISE
Thanks to generous corporate and
individual sponsors, Radiance
scholarships have helped more
than 550 students stay in school
and on track to graduation.
In 2013, Radiance raised a
record $782,000 for student
scholarships. Since its inception
in 2011, this annual event
has brought in more than $1.6
million to provide scholarships
for undergraduate students,
mostly juniors and seniors, who
are in good academic standing
but at risk for dropping out of
school due to financial issues.
Our 2014 Radiance, CSU
Realizing the Promise
will be Friday, May 9. For
sponsorship information and
tickets, contact the CSU
Foundation at 216-523-7207
or visit www.csuohio.edu/
events/radiance.

“These scholarships are more
than just dollars. They are truly
life-changing,” says President
Ronald M. Berkman.
The President’s Medal – CSU’s
most prestigious non-academic
recognition – was awarded to
benefactors Jennie and Trevor
Jones. Both champions of CSU,
Jennie Jones is a renowned
photographer and community
volunteer and Trevor Jones is
a distinguished scientist and
prominent business leader who
served on the University’s Board
of Trustees, including four years
as vice chairman.
The couple has generously
supported student scholarships
and other University needs and
for two years served as host
committee chairs for the Moses
Cleaveland Scholarship Dinner,
forerunner to Radiance.
The President’s Medal was
awarded in recognition and
appreciation for all they have
done for CSU and Cleveland.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS
Our students...
in their own words
My deepest gratitude for selecting me
as the recipient of the William Shorrock
Scholarship. Going through the history
program at CSU has been one of the best
experiences of my life. I am really proud
to be part of Dr. Shorrock’s legacy at CSU.
Tony DiFranco
I am so appreciative of the Lubrizol
Scholarship – you have no idea what it
means to me and my family. It is my goal
to make significant contributions in the
field of engineering.
Mike Sago
I was ecstatic and very grateful to receive
the Ronald Davis Scholarship. I am
an international student, majoring in
management information systems. You have
lightened my financial burden. I will work
very hard and hope one day I can give back
to others just as you have given to me.
I cannot express how thankful I am for the
Joseph and Martha Peek Scholarship. You
will not regret awarding it to me. Thank you
for furthering my future.
Rachel Riedmann
Noora Akram
Your generosity allows students to achieve
their aspirations at a quality institution that
continues to grow with the city. Thank you
doesn’t even begin to express my gratitude
for the Radiance Scholarship.
Riann Saran
I am beyond honored to receive the Monte
Ahuja Endowed Scholarship. Being the first
in my family to attend college has been
quite the journey. Your generous support has
allowed me to get this much closer to my
end goals.
