“Systems are actually all connected…there is
no real separation between our water system,
food system, energy system, the built
infrastructure that we’ve created, or the
communities that exist in these places.”
Dawn Lippert | Director, Energy Excelerator
Energy Excelerator is a startup program dedicated to helping solve the
world’s energy challenges, starting in Hawaii.

Over the past 3 years we’ve been working toward our mission of helping
the most innovative companies succeed and transforming Hawaii’s energy
system.
To the left is a snapshot of where we are now. How did we get here? You’ll
have to read on…
First, a heads up:
1. This report will look a little different from those typically produced
by financial institutions, tech companies, government agencies, or nonprofits. This is because our program is a hybrid; we stand at the nexus of investors, tech accelerators, and government grant programs; and yes, we are a program within a nonprofit.
2. All data in this report is as of JUNE 2015 . Why? Two reasons:
1)﴿ our flagship event in Silicon Valley is typically held in June; and 2)﴿ our application season starts in May. Although our previous
cohort is still executing their demonstration projects and customer
discovery, selecting a new cohort symbolizes a new year for us.

How it works
Our dual-‐track model takes the best from tech accelerators, investors, and government grants to develop a program customized for energy
innovation. Each summer we open for applications. We do three months of due diligence and select our new cohort of about 15 companies each fall,
7-‐10 for our Go-‐to-‐market Track and 5-‐8 for our Demonstration Track. Demonstration Track companies spend a week in Honolulu near the beginning
of their 12-‐18 month program, and typically travel to Hawaii every other month to work on their demonstration project. Our Go-‐to-‐market Track
cohort also comes together for a week in Honolulu near the beginning of their program. This is a week of customer discovery and developing cohort
relationships. Our Go-‐to-‐market Track lasts 8 months with 4 one-‐week immersions with their cohort in Hawaii and Silicon Valley.
9
How it works
How does Energy Excelerator IMPACT companies in such a SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME? Two ways: 1) Peer-‐to-‐peer learning to
leverage inter-‐cohort expertise, something EEx borrowed from top tech accelerators; and 2) A custom-‐built ecosystem for each company.
Outside of the weeks we spend together as a cohort, the people EEx surrounds us with are hand-‐picked to fit our needs.
Lisa Laughner | CEO, Go Electric
How does Energy Excelerator ATTRACT companies FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY? Requiring companies to move to Hawaii for
the full duration of the program didn't fit the stage of company we were after. Our program is run in non-‐consecutive weeks. Companies
who aren't based in Hawaii end up traveling to the islands frequently to engage with their project partners and cohort. Some companies
even open offices and hire local team members.
Heather Richman | Strategic Partnerships, Energy Excelerator
An accelerator backed by GOVERNMENT FUNDING…how and why does that work? The Office of Naval Research and
Department of Energy are perfect partners for our program and our companies. With their funding we are able to award our
companies relatively large grants (up to $1M). Our companies are able to validate their technologies and business models and
leverage our funding to raise follow-‐on capital and secure customers.
Warren Doi | Go-‐to-‐market Track, Energy Excelerator
As an Energy Excelerator company, what do you GIVE BACK? I’ve spent hours talking to customers, creating slides, negotiating deals,
and practicing my pitch. They've spent hours providing feedback, speaking with policy makers in this highly regulated industry, connecting
us to investors & customers, and delivering great program content. So, one thing companies put in is time; you get out what you put in.
Another thing we give back is a donation of 1-‐6% equity to the program. And finally, we give back by mentoring other companies -‐ paying
it forward to entrepreneurs working to solve the same global challenges. Honestly folks, it’s worth it.
Arcady Sosinov | CEO, FreeWire Technologies

Energy Excelerator and Stem will deploy 1 MW of energy storage across
25 buildings, providing Hawaiian Electric with a distributed energy
storage asset and allowing participating companies to save money
on their electricity bills. It supports the transformation of Hawaii’s
electricity grid from one dependent on fossil fuels to one that
incorporates large amounts of solar and wind.
Stem is a technology company that uses
predictive analytics and advanced energy
storage to help businesses reduce electricity
costs, while also providing services to the grid.

Their initial business was directed at selling PV to
prospective EV buyers at the auto dealership.
Through customer discovery, Autowatts realized
that professional service providers (ie accountants,

technology to sell PV to existing clients, and share
earnings with Autowatts.

Intensive customer discovery
The Energy Excelerator team and its mentors helped to develop the
technical specifications for the system. Their customer discovery work
along with a series of focused calls and interviews became the
foundation for their functional requirements.
The Energy Excelerator team mentored him through the fundraising
process: 1)﴿ guided the CEO through the legal framework of convertible
notes, 2)﴿ helped establish a valuation metric, 3)﴿ helped create their
pitch deck, and 4)﴿ introduced him to over 30 viable investors.
