A motion was made by Betty Stout and seconded by Michael Stoune to approve the minutes from the 1st meeting of the Graduate Council held on Thursday, September 1, 2011. The Graduate Council approved these minutes. III. Students admitted to Doctoral Candidacy. The following students were admitted to candidacy for the doctorate on the recommendation of their departments. A motion was made by Gary Elbow and seconded by Johnny Sparks. Agricultural Education V. Academic Requests A motion was made by Gary Elbow and seconded by Carrye Syma to approve all four of the following courses. The Graduate Council approved the motion with a vote of 8 in favor and 1 against of the SOC 5101 course. All four courses passed. COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES SOC 5101: Professional Socialization (1:1:0) (Addition) GRADUATE SCHOOL BTEC 5100: Scientific Communication (1:1:0) (Addition) COLLEGE OF HUMAN SCIENCES RHIM 5317: Convention & Events Sales and Services (3:3:0) (Addition) RHIM 5345: Advanced Wine Marketing and Tourism (3:3:0) (Addition) VI. Other Business Dr. Miller announced that the Board of Regents is currently working on approving the contract with the ELS Educational Services. Dr. Michael Stoune gave a brief presentation regarding the 1st Annual Arts and Humanities Conference to be held on October 21st and 22nd. The committee received 140 abstract submissions. The event will be all day on Friday and Saturday with an awards ceremony at the conclusion of the event on Saturday. Their will cash awards for the winners in each category. We hope to make this Conference grow each year. Dr. Miller will be meeting with the all the Deans of the University to see if they can have someone to review their applications for the requirements within the departments and inform the applicants of any missing data. Dr. Miller is hoping to have a 30 day turnaround on applications with a (yes, no, etc.) response to the applications. Since we now lose many students who get faster responses from other Universities. Announcements The ApplyTexas website is going to be updated with some additional questions that the Graduate School feels will be of tremendous help. The Graduate School Graduate 101 Doctoral and 335 Masters for the Summer Graduation Term. Dr. Miller extended an invitation to everyone for the Arts and Humanities Conference to be held in the Student Union Building. The next Graduate Council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 1, 2011.
