Please feel free to drop by outside of the regular office hours. Bear in mind, however, that while I may be on campus during the day, it is possible that I could be otherwise occupied. Thus, if you are unable to come to the regular office hours, and need to meet with me, it may be in your best interest to set up an appointment beforehand. Text: Prerequisite: Tutoring: Calculus, by Varberg, Purcell and Rigdon Eighth Edition, ISBN 0130811378 Grades of C or better in MATH 1050 and 1060, or math ACT score of at least 28 The Rushing Math Center offers FREE drop in tutoring, a computer lab, and study areas for undergraduates. The Rushing Student Center is between the LCB and JWB. The hours for fall semester are: 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The tutoring center will open for the semester on Wednesday, August 24th. This class is intended to be a first introduction to the ideas and techniques of basic calculus. In addition, a university calculus course is the traditional starting point for the transition from so-called lower-level and higher-level mathematics. These two factors combine to create something of a calculus mystique. Many students bring to the course preconceived notions that calculus is more difficult than the mathematics with which they are already familiar. In this, they are mistaken. What is true, however, is that this material is unfamiliar, and represents a different way of approaching the art of problem solving. Learning the subtleties of this approach requires time, patience, and dedicated thought. It is likely that study patterns that you have found effective in previous classes will prove less fruitful here. I suggest that when presented an assignment, you allow sufficient time to peruse the material at leisure, think carefully about what you have read, and only then attempt the exercises. Personally, I have found this approach to be most effective in my own studies. Withdrawal Date: Be aware that the last day to drop classes for fall semester is Friday, September 2nd. The last day to withdraw from term length classes is Friday, October 21st. ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with physical, cognitive, systemic learning, and psychiatric disabilities. Students need to contact the instructor at the beginning of the semester to discuss any such accommodations that they may require for this course. Grading Final Grading Scale: 100-93% 92-90% 89-87% A AB+ Homework: 86-83% 82-80% 79-77% B BC+ 76-73% 72-70% 69-67% C CD+ 66-63% 62-60% 0-59% D DE 30% Homework will be assigned daily according to the attached schedule. These assignments will be collected once per week, on Tuesday, before the start of class. Late homework will not be accepted, under ANY circumstances, but your lowest two weekly scores will be dropped. Each week, a representative subset of the assigned problems will be selected, and graded. These scores form the basis of your semester homework grade. While not all of the homework problems will be graded on every assignment, you will not know in advance which problems will be selected. Therefore, it is in your best interest to complete all of the assigned problems on the day on which they are assigned. Failure to do so will cause you to fall behind, a situation from which it will be difficult, though not impossible, to recover. Midterms (3): 45% (15% each) Three midterm exams will be given during the semester. These exams will be given on September 23rd, October 21st, and November 18th. You MUST bring a valid photo ID to the exams. Absence from an exam will be excused only if you can produce verifiable and convincing evidence that you have a significant illness or serious family crisis that will prevent you from attending. Except under extremely unusual circumstances, you must make arrangements with me well before the missed test, and you will be expected to take the exam prior to your absence. Final Exam: 25% The final exam will be administered on Monday, December 12th from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Make-ups for the final exam will be allowed in only the most extreme of circumstances. As with the midterm exams, you will be expected to take the exam before the regularly scheduled date. Please make any necessary arrangements with me well in advance. This will allow me to prepare the necessary alternative versions of the test. Homework Schedule Week Section Problems 1. Handout Problem sets 1 and 2 2.
