Attendees: Mike Galyean, Norman Hopper, Sukant Misra, Cindy Akers, Steve Fraze, Leslie
Thompson, Mark Wallace, Tom Thompson, Eduardo Segarra, Charles Klein (for Alon
Kvashny), and Norman Martin
1. Approval of February 21, 2011 minutes
Minutes of the February 21, 2011 meeting were approved.
Dr. Galyean referenced a paper on investment and research, Investing in a Better Future
through Public Agricultural Research. The paper will be distributed via email.
2. Chairperson Manual
A list of proposed items for a chairperson’s manual was distributed. Suggestions
were made to include the following items to the manual. Staff evaluations,
graduation ceremonies, study abroad, internships, and academic program
assessments. The revised list will be distributed via email for further review.
3. Budget Update
Mike Galyean and Sukant Misra gave a brief update on the budget. Dr. Galyean
reported that we can expect changes in the health insurance plan. Dr. Misra
reported the 2011 RCM model budget has been completed. Dr. Misra also reported
the recommended 2012 RCM budget will be sent to the president by the end of the
week for review. The president will have a month to review the budget and then it
will be submitted to the deans for review. All anticipated reductions are
incorporated into the model.
Questions were raised regarding the summer budget. It was noted the classification
of space is ongoing.
4. Growing Graduate Program
Dr. Misra reported seven proposals were received from the departments. All of the
proposals will be sent to the Graduate School today for recommendation. The
submitting units and number of proposals are as follows:

Dr. Misra noted that funding in the past has been focused on programs that bring in
graduate students and recruiting distance education programs.
Dr. Galyean reported there has been interest between NRM and LA to return the
Land Use and Planning degree program back to CASNR. The program is now in
Architecture. More inquiries will be made.
5. Performance Evaluations Due in May
Performance evaluations for faculty and staff are due to HR May 31, 2011.
Instructions were sent via email. The evaluations of department chairs will be
administered as in the past. Information will be made available in the next few
weeks.
6. CASNR Award Nomination Timeline
Copies of a suggested timeline were distributed. Additional information will be sent
to the members via email listing nominees and recipients and criteria.
Suggestions have been made to involve the CASNR Advisory Board in the voting
process. The CASNR Service/Outreach Award would be one possibility. Another
possibility could be the outstanding agriculturalists that are recognized at the Pig
Roast.
7. Other
Dr. Galyean referenced the report to the provost regarding the academic calendar.
Copies were distributed for information.
Charles Klein announced the Department of Landscape Architecture will be hosting
a visiting colleague. James Callaghan, Director of the Kaxil Kiuic/Helen Moyers
Biocultural reserve in Yucatan, Mexico, will present “Opportunities for
Collaboration” Friday, March 25, 9:00 a.m. in PSS room 108.
Mark Wallace announced the graduate Conservation Law Enforcement program will
go forward to the Board of Regents at the May meeting.
Norman Martin reported the university’s website committee is working on a Google
base map system and a 500 word Google style word search.
Dr. Misra distributed copies of CASNR’s section in the Strategic Initiative booklet.
Additional information can be added to the booklet.
Dr. Misra announced the VPR’s office has scheduled the STC oral presentations on
March 30 and 31.
