This repon is the fony ninth quarterly bulletin of seismicity in the
northeastern United States for the period October-December 1987.
Included
are geographic maps of the network station and seismicity during the quaner.
and of the cumulative seismicity for the fony nine quaners.
Also included are
tables of station locations. epicenters. and all event data for the quaner.
appendix describes the velocity

ACKNOiWIEDGEMENI'S
Partial or full
support from various agencies for the operation of the
Northeastern Seismic Network (NEUSSN) is gratefully
acknowledged.
Agencies
providing support to members of NEUSSN include the U.S. Regulatory
Commission, Office of Reactor Safety Research; the U.S. Geological Survey
Office of Earthquake Studies;
Program;
the National Science Foundation, Geophysics
the New York State Energy and Resources Development Authority;
Data from stations operated by Weston Geophysical Research, Inc., and
Woodward-Clyde Consultants are routinely provided to NEUSSN when available.
Epicentral and station data for some of the events in Canadanear the U.S.
border are provided by the Earth Physics Branch, Dept. of Energy, Mines, and
Resources, Ottawa, Canada.
In addition to the above operational suppon. equipment has been
provided by the Advanced ResearchProjects Agency of the Dept. of Defense
and by the Office of Environmental Geology of the U.S. Geological Survey.
IN1RODUcnON
Station operations and seismicity results for the quaner are summarized
in three figures and four tables (the formats of the tables are described in the
section EXPLANATION OF TABLES).
Figure 1 is a geographic map of NEUSSN stations which were operational
during the period;
Figures 2 and 3 are maps of seismicity for the reporting
period and for the cumulative period from October 1975. respectively.
Table 1 is a location list of operating stations;
list of epicenters during the reponing period;
Table 2 is a chronological
Table 3 lists station arrival
times. distances. azimuths. amplitudes. and periods for the events of Table 2;
Table 4 lists

during
SEISMICITY
During the period October-December. 1987. a total of 49 earthquakes were
detected and located in the northeastern United States.
In addition. 35
earthquakes are included which had epicenters in Canada. 11 of these events
were within 100 kilometers of the U.S. border.
aftershocks
and
Table 4 includes 16 foreshocks.
microearthquakes.
The magnitudes of the 49 earthquakes in Table 2 ranges from 1.1 to 3.7.
The magnitudes of the events in Table 4 range from -.1 to 2.1.
