decline
Three years ago the National Audubon Society listed the Northern Bobwhite Quail as the
No. 1 common bird in decline. From 1967 to 2007, the bird’s population decreased from
31 million to 5.5 million. “They’re declining everywhere, but we’re doing better here in
the Rolling Plains than other parts of the country,” said Brad Dabbert, an associate
professor in Texas Tech’s Department of Natural Resources Management. more »
Texas Tech officials announce strategic hiring of noted animal science
researcher
As Texas Tech continues its journey toward Tier One status, administration officials
announced this week strategic hirings of seven respected researchers who will help grow
the university’s research capabilities. Among the newly added faculty members is Guy
Loneragan, now a professor with the university’s Department of Animal and Food

Better by Far; McKenney drives technology-based PSS distance
education
Texas Tech’s Department of Plant and Soil Science has named a long-time faculty
member to serve as its distance program leader. Cynthia McKenney, who was recently
named a full professor by the Texas Tech Board of Regents, will be responsible for
coordinating the department’s advising and distance courses. more »

Hold your horses; Dub Parks rodeo arena renovation underway
Texas Tech is making over the university’s Dub Parks Arena, adding new fencing,
repairing rails for practice areas and installing modern feed storage bins. Located at 4th
Street and Quaker Avenue in Lubbock, the arena was closed during August for the

The Burnett Center for Beef Cattle Research and Instruction is an important resource to
Texas’ feedlot industry and provides significant educational benefits to students in
