‘Temporary’ Reserve; CASNR researchers gauge Chinese cotton policy
shift
China’s textile mill demand for cotton played a critical role in driving cotton prices to a
record $2.27 last month, up 175 percent over the year before. But now cotton
producers are wary of lower cotton prices in the near future, according to a report
from Texas Tech University’s Cotton Economics Research Institute. more »
Flavor Chemists’ Honor: AFS’ Legako tapped for Jogue Scholarship
Award
A standout graduate student from Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food
Sciences has been selected to receive the prestigious Jogue Scholarship Award from The Society of
Flavor Chemists. Jerrad Legako of Lubbock will be presented the $2,000 scholarship at the society’s
annual meeting on May 17 in Newark, New Jersey, announced CASNR officials today.

Tech women’s rodeo team buckles down to take regional
championship
Led by women’s all-around cowgirl champ Bailey Guthrie, Texas Tech women’s rodeo team was
crowned the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association’s southwest regional team champion on
Saturday at the Tarleton State University Rodeo in Stephenville. Some 15 colleges and universities
across West Texas and Eastern New Mexico competed at the event. more »
Texas viticulture certificate program application window opens in June
Next fall the state’s thriving grape and wine industry will have a new group of trained professionals in
the pipeline thanks to an innovative program known as the Texas Viticulture Certificate Program. But

atrium last month as a striking mix
of flowers lifted the spirits of
judges and visitors from across
campus. More than 25 flower
arrangements were featured as
part of the final grades for
students in a Plant and Soil
Science’s floral design class, led by
instructor Amber Bates.

In Profile: Rudy Ritz launches agricultural science career to next level
After spending 14 years as a high school agricultural science teacher, Rudy Ritz
decided it was time for a change, and that change was moving to the collegiate level.
Encouraged by Steve Fraze, head of Texas Tech’s Department of Agricultural Education and
Communications, the Meadow native began working on his doctorate at Tech in 2005. more »

month, as the director of CASNR’s International Center for Food Industry Excellence
