Contest
Texas Tech’s Meat
Judging Team
continued its
winning streak
with a first-place finish on Sunday
(Oct. 16) at the American Royal
Meat Judging Contest in Omaha,
Neb. The team posted a 21-point
victory over their nearest
competitor, Colorado State.
Oklahoma State, South Dakota
State and the University of Illinois
rounded out the top five teams at

Positive Signs; CASNR once again sets fall enrollment and research record
Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources reached a new benchmark in
student enrollment with a record number of students signed up for classes in the fall semester,
university officials report. Final enrollment for the college stood at 1,874 up 5 percent. more »
Texas Tech gets water conservation funding boost from NRCS
Texas Tech University is part of a water conservation team that has received a
$499,848 grant from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The
Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) provides three years of funding to support a largescale demonstration effort in the south plains and northern panhandle. more »
Winning Ways; Livestock judging team continues victory run at state
fairs
Texas Tech’s livestock judging team continued their winning streak by taking first place
at the Tulsa State Fair (Oct.8 ) and the State Fair of Texas (Oct. 10). The team won each
contest by more than 50 points and had numerous top-ten individuals. more »
Meat judging team wins at Pennsylvania’s prestigious Eastern National
Texas Tech’s Meat Judging Team successfully began their fall judging season with a win
Saturday (Oct. 1) at the Eastern National meat judging contest in Wyalusing, Pa. The
Red Raiders earned top honors with a score of 4,071 points; outdistancing their nearest
competitor by 44 points. more »

Texas Tech’s Guthrie, Langdon maintain lead in NIRA regional rodeo
standings
The Texas Tech Women’s rodeo team was named Reserve Champions on Oct. 15 at the
Frank Phillips College/West Texas A&M Southwest Region National Intercollegiate
Rodeo in Perryton. Bailey Guthrie, a senior exercise and sports sciences major from
Rigby, Idaho, won the goat-tying championship with a time of 7.8 seconds in the finals
to continue her title as reining Southwest region champion. more »
New Class; AFS ‘Hall of Fame’ inductees announced at United Spirit
Arena fete
Several outstanding students, alumni and supporters from Texas Tech’s Department of
Animal and Food Sciences were spotlighted Friday (Oct. 7) during the group’s hall of
Fame and Meat Science Recognition Banquet and the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock.
Among the honors presented during the evening were the Meat Science Distinguished
Alumna Award and Albert Usener Award, along with Hall of Fame distinguished service, graduate of
distinction, and horizon awards. more »

Brashears presented ARCS Foundation’s ‘Scientist of the Year’ award
Mindy Brashears, director of Texas Tech’s International Center for Food Industry
Excellence, has been selected to receive the ‘Scientist of the Year’ award by the
Lubbock chapter of the ARCS Foundation. The award was presented Tuesday (Oct. 25)
at a special scholar reception at the Lubbock Women’s Club in Lubbock. more »
Saddle Up; Texas Tech barrel racer rides to Vernon College Rodeo
victory
Led by a championship performance from a senior English major from Channing, Texas
Tech’s rodeo team had a strong outing this weekend at the Vernon College Southwest
Region National Intercollegiate Rodeo in Wichita Falls. Tech’s Haley Nelson led the
team with a barrel racing win that kept her at the top of the regional standings. more

Peter Dotray, a professor of weed science with Texas Tech’s Department of Plant and
Soil Science, was presented the “2011 Specialist of the Year in Texas Agriculture” award
from the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association (TCAAA) this summer at the
