organization at their monthly
meeting in the Animal and Food

in Chicago

two Food and Environmental
Safety awards for outstanding
research presentation at the
annual meeting of the Conference
of Research Workers in Animal
Diseases held in Chicago, Dec. 4-6.

Texas Tech to offer groundbreaking doctoral program for ag education
leaders
Texas Tech University has announced the launch of a new, human dimension-focused
doctoral program to prepare graduates for senior academic leadership roles in
agricultural communications and education. The Doctor of Philosophy Degree in
Agricultural Communications and Education will be taught by faculty from Tech’s
nationally-recognized Department of Agricultural Education and Communications starting in January.

CASNR partners in project targeting cancer prevention in rural
communities
Texas Tech researchers are teaming up with United Supermarkets on a $295,000
project that aims to address some of today’s most preventable sources of cancer –
obesity, tobacco use and sunburn – in the Panhandle communities of Dalhart and
Muleshoe. If successful, similar intervention programs could be replicated in other
communities across the state. more »
Texas Tech Soil Judging Team shines at regional competition; nationals
next
Students from Texas Tech’s Department of Plant and Soil Science captured first place in
the team competition and third overall today (Nov. 11) at the Students of Agronomy
Soils & Environmental Sciences Region IV Collegiate Soil Judging Contest in College
Station. The team’s overall finish earned it the opportunity to compete in the National
Soil Judging Contest next spring at the University of Wisconsin. more »

Ryan Rathmann, one of the nation’s top livestock judging team coaches, has been
selected as the first John W. and Doris Jones Endowed Professor in Texas Tech
University’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences. The honor, funded from a gift
from the G. R. White Trust, was presented during a special presentation today (Dec. 5)
at the university’s animal and food sciences building. more »
Research: Baseline bedding needs for swine transport tallied; Texas
Tech study
The assembly-line efficiency of U.S. meatpackers and swine processors goes off the
rails a bit for about 4 percent of the 100 million pigs transported annually to butchering
day. But something as simple as an adequate bed of wood shavings or wheat straw
underfoot and matched to the weather goes a long way in improving animal survival,
report Texas Tech researchers. more »
In Profile: Landscape architecture’s DeMera Ollinger bound for botanic
Brazil
DeMera Ollinger started her college career at West Texas A&M University digging into
English literature. But it wasn’t until she started working at an Amarillo greenhouse
that an opportunity to combine her creative passion with a newfound interest in plants
took root. That change in vocation direction led her to the Hub City and a new major in
Texas Tech’s Department of Landscape Architecture. more »
NRM, South Plains College launch new program boosting game warden
careers
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department hires about 50 new game wardens annually –
if it can find that many people trained for the job. Texas Tech and South Plains College
are now partners in a new transfer program designed to fill that need. more »
Weinheimer tapped for research assistant professor, water center
leadership
Justin Weinheimer, a skilled research economist with Texas Tech’s Department of
Agricultural and Applied Economics, has been named a research assistant professor
and assistant director of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’
Water Center, officials with the university report. He officially stepped into his new
posts on Nov. 1. more »
