inaugural class of ‘Ranch House
Designs Scholars,’ university
officials announced on Wednesday
(Oct. 3). In all, 27 students were
selected from a pool of more than
100 students from 35 different

But When
The 2008 farm bill, which provides funding for a variety of nutrition programs,
including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly food stamps), as
well as payments to farmers and agricultural programs, technically expired on Sept. 30.
And the lack of congressional action has left a certain degree of uncertainty across the
South Plains farm belt. more »

appreciation to representatives from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo at a
special scholarship luncheon on Monday (Oct. 22) at the university’s Red Raider

American Royal; Tech’s Meat Judging Team a Cut Above the
Competition
Texas Tech’s meat judging team took first place honors Sunday (Oct. 21) at the
American Royal’s Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest. The win makes the fifth
consecutive year the Red Raiders have won the Omaha, Neb., competition. more »
Texas Tech sets Another Enrollment Record, CASNR Brings 1,856
Students
Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources continued its
record-setting student enrollment pace, largely maintaining last year’s stellar numbers
with 1,856 students signing up for classes in the fall semester, university officials
report. Last year CASNR reached a new benchmark in student enrollment with a record
1,874 students attending the High Plains campus. more »
Take Up the Rake; NRM Students Lend a Hand on Canyon Lakes Phase
II Cleanup
A community-wide effort to help clean up Canyon Lakes #3, known by Guadalupe
Barrio residents as “El Arroyo” rolled out on Saturday (Oct. 20), and included member
of the Guadalupe Neighborhood Association, as well as a special group of students
from Texas Tech’s Association for Natural Resource Scientists and Society for

In Profile: Connor Wilmeth’s First Cotton Crop Is A True Learning
Experience
Connor Wilmeth is finishing up the first cotton crop he’s ever made on his own.
Wilmeth, 20, is a junior plant and soil sciences major at Texas Tech University with “a
passion to farm.” He secured a loan on his own this year and is growing cotton on 134
acres of leased land. more »

Texas Tech University standout student Maria Mejia is featured this week in the latest
edition of the ‘Latinos in Agriculture’ website. Masi, as she’s known to her friends, is
