Team Takes 10th National
Championship
in Nebraska
Texas Tech
University brought
home the school’s
tenth national
championship in meat judging on
Sunday (Nov. 18) at the American
Meat Science Association’s
International Intercollegiate Meat
Judging Contest in Dakota City,
Neb. Tech won the beef judging,
lamb judging, pork judging,
specifications, placings and
reasons divisions, and finished
second in total beef and beef

of 4,257 points and shattering the
previous record score of 4,245
points set by Texas A&M a decade

Three years into a five-year project aimed at stemming a massive decline of quail in Texas, researchers
with a conservation alliance based at Texas Tech University are finding that last year’s blistering

Icon Makeover; Repairs Underway on Historic Texas Tech Dairy Barn
Texas Tech University’s historic dairy barn received a facelift this fall. The structure’s
exterior now dons a new coat of paint, and all roof shingles have been replaced on the
treasured campus monument. “The dairy barn is a vital part of the agricultural heritage
of Texas Tech,” said Michael Galyean, dean of Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences

Tech Livestock Judging Team Takes Fourth at International Competition
Texas Tech’s Livestock Judging Team finished fourth on Tuesday (Nov. 13) at the North
American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville. The team was second in
reasons, second in sheep, fourth in performance cattle and fourth in swine, while two
Red Raiders finished in the top-ten overall rankings. more »
‘Certainly Disheartening:’ Decrease in Cotton Futures Could Affect
Local Crops
This year’s price wouldn’t seem so low if there hadn’t been a recent spike in prices.
National average prices for the last two years have been in the 80-90 cent range. Low
cotton futures are partially due to shifts in supply and demand, and partially due to
fears the United States will go over the fiscal cliff. more »

Architecture, according to officials

Whitney Conner, an expert in youth development and agricultural education, has been
named Coordinator of Student Programs with Texas Tech University’s Dr. Bill Bennett

Texas Tech’s rodeo team turned in strong roping and riding performances at the final
of the fall season’s southwest region national intercollegiate rodeos this weekend (Oct.

AFS Hall of Fame, Meat Science Recognition Banquet Honors Best and
Brightest
Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences highlighted its outstanding
alumni on Friday (Oct. 12) at special 200-person recognition banquet in university’s
United Spirit Arena. Award categories for the seven honorees included Distinguished
Service, Horizon, Advanced Graduate of Distinction, Meathead of the Year, Meat
Science Distinguished Alumni, and the Albert Usener Award. more »
Advisory Council Taps AFS’s Brashears for 16th Texas Tech President
Search
Mindy Brashears, director of Texas Tech’s International Center for Food Industry
Excellence, has been selected to serve on a 26-member advisory council to assist in
selecting the next president of Texas Tech. Brashears is nationally known for
developing a treatment shown to reduce food-borne pathogens such as Salmonella
and E. coli in processed beef and poultry. more »
Cotton Boll License Plates Continue To Provide Scholarships for CASNR
Students
Texas drivers are helping a talented group of Texas Tech students earn an agriculturebased degree by purchasing license plates bearing the proud image of a cotton boll.
The program is the result of an opportunity provided through the Texas Transportation
Code, which allows organizations to design and sell specialty license plates to raise
funds for worthy causes. more »
Gum, Nolan Participate in CASNR Congressional Internship Program
Two students from Texas Tech’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources will be
spending the fall semester working as interns in the nation’s capital. Running from first
of September through early December, the college’s fall intern program affords
selected students an opportunity to experience first-hand the government’s day-to-day

Texas Tech’s Livestock Judging Team Finishes Third at American Royal
Texas Tech University’s Livestock Judging Team finished in third place on Saturday
(Nov. 3) at the American Royal Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Kansas City.
The contest tested the participants’ knowledge of cattle, sheep, goats and swine, as
well as, oral reasons. more »
