Secretary Tom Vilsack today (Jun.
15) when he hosted a town hall
meeting at the Museum of Texas
Tech University in Lubbock. High
on the agenda was a review of the
new farm bill, specifically called
the Federal Agriculture Reform
and Risk Management Act of 2013.

Animal and Food Sciences today
(Jun. 21) according to officials
within the College of Agricultural
Sciences and Natural Resources.
Michael Orth takes the helm of
the agricultural academic unit at
the university after serving 17
years at Michigan State University.

A food safety and public health research team with Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food
Sciences has received $100,000 for Salmonella research from animal-health company Zoetis. The
research funds will help provide resources to better understand and describe the ecology of Salmonella
in cattle populations. more »
Tech’s Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team takes national
championship
Texas Tech’s Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team is basking in the glow of another
national championship title today after winning top honors at this week’s American
Meat Science Association’s Reciprocal Meat Conference. The Red Raiders took two
teams to the Auburn, Ala., competition and ended up in a head-to-head battle with
each other in the event’s final round.. more »
Point of Order: CASNR congressional summer interns bound for capital
Six students from Texas Tech’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources will be
spending the summer working as interns in the nation’s capital. Running from June
through August, the college’s congressional spring intern program affords selected
students an opportunity to experience first-hand the government’s day-to-day

An experienced research economist, who specializes in agricultural economics and
applied statistics at Clemson University, has been named an associate professor in
Texas Tech University’s Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, according
to officials within CASNR. Carlos Carpio officially stepped into new his teaching and

TAWC recognized with major American Water Resources Association
award
The Texas Alliance for Water Conservation, a research project made up of producers,
industries, universities, and government agencies, has received the American Water
Resources Association’s ‘Integrated Water Resources Management Award.’ The award
will be presented at the group’s annual conference in November in Portland. more »
Charles Klein named interim chair of Landscape Architecture
Department
A long-time associate professor and noted landscape architect has been named the
new interim chair of Texas Tech University’s Department of Landscape Architecture,
according to officials with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resource.

Big Moment: Spring semester ends on high note for CASNR graduates
More than 3,900 Texas Tech students, including 165 from the College of Agricultural
Sciences and Natural Resources, received diplomas at the university’s commencement
ceremonies Saturday (May 18) at the United Spirit Arena in Lubbock. more »
AFS grad student Elizabeth Domby tapped for NACTA Teaching Award
Texas Tech graduate student Elizabeth Domby has been selected to receive a
‘Graduate Student Teaching Award’ from the North American Colleges and Teachers of
Agriculture. The honor will be presented to the Department of Animal and Food
Sciences doctoral student at the organization’s annual conference on June 25-29 at
Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va. more »
Saddle Up; Tech women compete at college national rodeo finals in
Wyoming
A foursome of Texas Tech students hoped history would repeat itself when the Tech
women’s rodeo team made its way to the College National Finals Rodeo June 9-15. The
team made school history last summer, winning its first national championship at the
finals, but finished 27th this year at the Casper, Wyo., competition. more »
