Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources on Apr. 29 broke ground on an
$13.6 million expansion and renovation of what will be known as the ‘Bayer Plant Science Building.’
The project adds 21,122 square feet of new construction, and includes 2,440 square feet of renovation
and exterior upgrades to the existing home of the university’s Department of Plant and Soil Science.
“Our relationship with Bayer CropScience continues to grow, further strengthening the contributions
and impact both have on agriculture in West Texas and beyond,” said Michael Galyean, dean of Tech’s
College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. more »
CASNR celebrates new professorships; Dabbert, McKenney honored at
Arena
Officials with the Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
have announced the creation and appointment of two top-level professorships. They
are the Burnett Foundation Professorship in Quail Ecology, which goes to Brad
Dabbert, while the Rockwell Professorship in Horticulture will go to Cynthia
McKenney. more »
Expect minimal impact from recent Chinese cotton reserve policy
changes
An analysis of a recent price decline in China’s reserve cotton finds that the dip will
have minor impacts on China’s cotton production, consumption, ending stocks and
imports, according to a study led by Texas Tech University agricultural researchers.
Meantime, the impacts on the U.S. cotton market are likely to be negligible. more »

CASNR Scholarship Coordinator Lybby Brown retires after 22 years at
Tech
After more than two decades at Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and
Natural Resources, Lybby Brown is retiring. The college’s long-time coordinator for
scholarships was honored at a special reception on Apr. 23 at the Mesa Room of the
Student Union Building. Brown first joined CASNR in 1992. more »

Azel’s Petry leads Texas Tech Horse Judging Team at Nat’l Spring
Contest
In April North Central Texas College hosted the National Horse Judging Team Coaches’
Association Spring Contest at its Gainesville campus. And at the event’s senior college
division competition Texas Tech’s Amy Petry dominated, winning overall high
individual in the contest, with individual wins in the performance and reasons divisions.

AAEC’s Mackenzie White takes reins as Texas Tech’s new Masked Rider
Mackenzie White, a junior agricultural and applied economics major, is Tech’s new
Masked Rider. She becomes the 53rd student to don the iconic mascot’s mask and
cape so often seen at university athletic events. “Ideally, my Masked Rider legacy will
be one of a hard-working horsewoman who was consistently dedicated not only to the
position and its duties, but also to Tech,” White said. more »
Texas Tech’s Hergenreder places at SA animal nutrition research
conference
Jerilyn Hergenreder, a graduate student with Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and
Food Sciences, took home second place honors and a $1,375 scholarship in a graduate
student poster competition last month at the Plains Nutrition Council’s Spring
Conference in San Antonio. more »
CASNR students shine at Nat’l Latinos in Agriculture Leaders
Conference in SA
Ten students from Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources
were on hand for this year’s Latinos in Agriculture Leaders Conference in San Antonio.
The students represented Tech’s ‘Minorities in STEAM,’ an organization promoting the
success of minority students pursuing careers and degrees in science, technology,
