Fulbright Grant

of a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S.
Scholar grant. Conrad Lyford, an
associate professor specializing in
agribusiness, will travel to
Hawassa University in Ethiopia to
work with Ethiopian educators and
researchers to facilitate
agribusiness development and
value chain rationalization. more

Tech’s Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute announced on this month that a research project was
awarded more than $470,000 in funding by the Wal-Mart Foundation. The study, titled “Foam Indigo
Dyeing of Cotton Yarns: Machine Design and Process Control,” is aimed at reducing the amount of
water, contaminants, time, labor and expense needed to apply indigo dye to denim yarns. Tech’s FBRI’s
research team is attempting to determine machine design parameters and process controls necessary
for the foam application of pre-reduced indigo on yarns. By doing so, it could provide a more costefficient and ecologically sound method of dyeing denim. more »

the ‘2014 Producer of the Year
Award’ by the Texas Pork
Producers Association. Josh Krohn
of Lamesa received the honor last
month at the Texas Pork Producer
Conference and Youth Symposium

branching off of veins and arteries, connecting virtually every town in the state to
another. They’re called Farm-to-Market roads, and back in the day they were the main
thoroughfares allowing farmers and ranchers to bring their goods to the market to sell.

AFS’s Mindy Brashears receives IAFP Maurice Weber Laboratorian
Award
A professor in Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences has been selected
to receive the prestigious Maurice Weber Laboratorian Award from the International
Association for Food Protection. Mindy Brashears, who also serves as director of
Tech’s International Center for Food Industry Excellence, was presented the honor on
Aug. 6 at a national meeting of the group in Indianapolis. more »
Texas Tech’s ACT Chapter shines at national Ag Media Summit in
Indianapolis
Led by its public relations students, Tech’s Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow
chapter had a strong showing last month at the national ‘Ag Media Summit’ in

Boren selected to become new assistant professor with Tech’s AEC,
ICFIE
Amy Boren, an expert in international agricultural leadership, has been named an
assistant professor in Texas Tech University’s Department of Agricultural Education and
Communications, according to officials with the College of Agricultural Sciences and
Natural Resources. She officially stepped into new her teaching and research post on
July 15. more »

Four CASNR students bring home top-tier Terry Foundation
Scholarships
Four standout students from Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural
Resources have been selected to receive prestigious Terry Foundation Scholarships,
university officials announced today. Selected from a highly competitive applicant pool
of incoming freshmen who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, the foundation

Lange takes new post with Department of Agricultural and Applied
Economics
A farm and agribusiness management expert has been named an assistant professor of
farm and agribusiness management and director of farm operations in Tech’s
Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, according to officials within the
College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Kelly Lange officially stepped
into her new teaching and research post on Sept. 1.
Scott Longing hired as new entomologist for Tech’s Plant and Soil
Science
An experienced entomologist has been named an assistant professor in Texas Tech’s
Department of Plant and Soil Science. Scott Longing officially stepped into his new
teaching and research post on Sept. 1. He is currently focusing on research involving
the ecology and conservation of endemic terrestrial insects at the Monahans sandhills
in western Texas. more »
Texas Tech graduate school honors high-quality thesis by AEC’s Nellie
Hill
Earlier this week Texas Tech University’s Graduate School announced the 2014 award
winners who achieved high quality work in their theses and dissertations. In the ‘Social
Sciences’ category, the master’s thesis second place award went to Nellie Hill, a
graduate student with Tech’s Department of Agricultural Education and

National Cattlemen’s Foundation presents W.D. Farr Scholarship to
AFS’s Ison
A doctoral student with Texas Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences has
been awarded a W.D. Farr Scholarship from the National Cattlemen’s Foundation. Josh
Ison of Batavia, Ohio, was presented the $12,000 award, which recognizes superior
achievement in academics, on July 31 at the 2014 Cattle Industry Summer Conference
in Denver. more »
Irrigation Management; TAWC Summer Field Day focuses on smart
water planning
Texas Tech’s International Center for Agricultural Competitiveness Director Darren
Hudson was one of the featured speakers participating in the latest edition of the
Texas Alliance for Water Conservation’s Summer Field Day. The free, annual event, which centered on
irrigation management technology, took place last month in the Floyd County. more »
