Boston College’s first tenured black faculty member, Charles F. Smith, Jr. will present a talk on his life and his enduring passion to fight for social justice. The talk is one in a series of presentations during BC Social Work’s 2015-2016 Diversity Focus on “Race & Justice.” Professor Charles F. Smith, Jr. joined Boston College in 1968 as an instructor of social studies methods and director of the Teacher Corps Program, which was part of a national effort to train graduate students to teach in urban areas. He developed and directed the Urban Education Program, Boston College’s initiative to prepare student-teachers for inner-city work. He also organized and chaired the Association of Black Faculty, Staff and Administrators, as well as the Council of Black Faculty.
