It was very helpful how he would make sure that everyone understood the material before he moved on. He was very patient with everyone, even when he had to explain the same things multiple times. The only area he needs to work on is his handwriting. Sometimes it was very hard to read what the equations were. The instructor made "Recipes"" for the equations which provided step by step instruction on how to solve the problem. It was very usefu In depth, comprehensive lectures. Available for private tutelage. Awesome teacher, makes even someone like me able to understand math material (I'm terrible at math, but I got an A in the class, just goes to show how great the teacher is!) Liked real world math problems. Learning environment was friendly and encouraged team learning. The homework was very helpful. The in class lectures were very helpful, and the notes that we took in class were also very helpful as well. Page 1/2 It was a very accesible course for students with regards to the contect and structure of the course. In addition, the material was much more applicable, and thus much more relatable to the average student. Math 1030 was a good course, for those who belong in math 1030... i belong in math 1210 ( i have taken 1050 and 1060 already) however i couldnt get an "add"" code in a timely manor so i was stuck with this class Everything was gone over very thoroughly in class, and the book was also helpful. we went over exactly what we would need to know for any tests and before we had to do our homework assignments I thought the content was very well organized in an effective order. I think the content should focus more on what is going to be on the final. the text was worthless The textbook provided great exercises for students to practice at the skills needed for the course. The course content was prefect for preparing students for exams. the book explained the concepts well, if had questions i'm sure it would've been useful. Question: Comments, suggestions on instructor performance Greg was a great instructor, he curved his teaching methods around our particular thought patterns, it was nice for a change. he was always avaliable during his said hours. He did an awesome job being available to ask question He also made sure everyone understood the material before moving on or offered to meet with them later to make sure they could get it. He was very helpful to the students and would go over certain subjects until the class understood, and if a student did not understand, he would make himself available for further help. This Professor (Greg Rice) was alaways available to talk to you after class and through email. He was always very patient and helpful, and he would always help you when you needed help. He was very willing to help students individually if they were struggling and was willing to answer any question during lectures. He was very open to let people interrupt him in the middle of a problem if they didn't understand. He took the time to Greg was a great teacher, and honestly tried to help everyone understand the material. I noticed that sometimes people would ask questions and his response was not quite to what they had asked. It was close but not exactly to their point, and thinking of several ways to explain things is always helpful for those who may not understand the first explanation. He took the time to meet with students if the need was made known, and also made serious efforts at keeping the students informed of the assignemnts, etc. friendly and approachable. His clarity in his explanations were very helpful. He needs work on his handwriting. He was very energetic and made himself readily available to help those who required it. Great teacher, makes everything understandable, made even a math class un-terrible. :) Always prepated and created a fun atmosphere Greg was a fabulous teacher Greg Rice is probably the best math teacher i'v ever had. He made the class fun as well as informative and was able to connect with his students. He didn't lecture at the class, but rather had a conversation with them that happened to be about math. The instructor was very organized. He also presented the course content in a way that gave students a good grasp of the subject. Whenever a student had trouble understanding something, the teacher would do his best to help the student by explaining again in a different way. For quizzes and exams, allow either a cheat sheet or the book. Remembering the stats equations etc is pointless, especially when I am told that I do not need to remember any of them. Well organized. I disliked the textbook assigned for this clss, finding it to be wordy and vague. tooooo much homework to write down. Statistics were barely covered in this course, the majority of the time was spent on counting and probability, which is good... but stats are much more important for engineers. The homework load in this class was over the top... each assignment was 20 problems long and each problem had parts a-f, which lead myself and other students to just burn through the homework as fast as possible and not really take the time to do the work and actually learn it. Page 1/2 The homework assignments were useful preparation for exams. The textbook was easy to follow and comprehend and the lectures were set up to follow one another smoothly. *please don't do quizzes *great notes and insight Assignments Excellent classroom setting alongside an effective instructor. Greg is a good teacher. Good homework assignments and practice tests. Question: Comments, suggestions on instructor performance The in class notes were very extensive and held all of the information needed. Also, the availability for consultation in the office and by email was great. I was very impressed with this instructor. He was enthusiastic, well-prepared, explained material very well, and promptly answered e-mails. Greg, you're a hell of a good teacher. I'm glad you love math as much as you do because you convey it in your teaching. Although the class seemed to drag forever thats just cause it was an hour and a half at night... bah. Anyway. Glad you were my teacher. You know your math and were always willing and eager to answer my questions. thanks a ton. Greg was always willing to meet with students and was helpful during meetings. He was always well prepared for class and it was clear he understood the material. Professor Rice made himself available to students outside scheduled office hours and he used a lot of examples in class to help the students better learn the material. *very helpful out of classroom *give him a raise Assignments Greg did fantastically, there isn't much I can give in the way of any suggestions for improvement. Greg is the best! Lectures were always well organized, fun and interesting. He went at a good pace and encouraged participation. Super nice, approachable and great at answering questions. The professor was very personable and encouraged us to ask him any questions. Preferrably ones that pertain to math. Course was good. Would have been interesting if we heard more real life applications of some of the skills- or saw some real life examples that the teacher had gotten vs. just from the book. More tutors to help in the tutoring center that know statis This course was incredibly effective in preparing me for several classes I will be continuing to take in order to get further into my field. Good class, lots of homework drilled you on the material i really couldn't find anything wrong with the material at all. the class is nice for it has high involement with the life Page 1/2 I really liked the textbook. I do not believe the lab should be required. I felt it was a waste of time. Question: Comments, suggestions on instructor performance I thought it was unfair that Rice allowed some of the students to take the exam later than our scheduled exam, even though the students had no "real excuse"". the instructor is good for he is patient to help me solve the problems I meet Greg was an excellent instructor. He had a personal passion for the subjuct matter and was always willing to take extra time to help with questions. He really has a personal interest in his students doing well. He spoke really fast! I think a lot of math professors think that we can understand what they are saying in math terms and process it at the speed they can. I would prefer them to speak slowly and concisely. Greg was a very good teacher. He adjusted his teaching to the needs of the students. I appreciated the mathematical proofs that he took the time to develop, rather than just give us the formulas. Good instructor, worked with students really well Greg was incredibly effective in lecture, quiz, and exams as they each related to the information necessary for probability and statistics. sometimes it was difficult to find him after class for office hours, but other than that no complaints Page 2/2 University of Utah Custom Report for GREGORY RICE Teaching MATH 3070 Undergraduate Applied Statistics I LEC sec: 1 2013 Summer There were: 33 possible respondents. The material was presented in an effective way and the course design was well planned helped learn about the material. I had a hard time learning from the book, it could be presented in a more comprehensive way. The design of the course was great. Each chapter was a building block to the next and adequate time was spent on each section. The quizes and homework choices were effective Page 1/2 Question: Comments, suggestions on instructor performance taught in an understanding way, very helpful This teacher was incredibly good. He took the time to help us understand every concept, was enthusiastic, and wanted us to succeed. - Well organized instructor - Workload is manageable - Instructor is very helpful during office hours Greg Rice is one of the best teachers I've had at the U. I've had many professors that don't seem to care about teaching. Research is all they're interested in. I hope Greg continues to teach. He's very good at it. The instructor demonstrated a good understanding of the material and communicated well regarding the material. I think he should have his notes copied on a powerpoint and just discuss the topic, instead of spending most the time writing the equations on the chalkboard Extremely well versed in the subject and course content. Did a very good job of presenting the material. Patient with students and all of the questions that were asked. Overall a great instructor. Practice tests and notes given in class were helpful. It was nice that you were available for help. Tests covered what was expected. Good opportunity for extra credit. Mix of computational and more challenging homework problems was good. It helped that the book was followed closely, so that we had a second source of information if we needed it. The material was presented well in the book and the book is an effective tool for teaching the subject. Excellent book. Page 1/2 The teacher's instruction was very effective. Great way to teach the material. reviews, lecture, homework The textbook, though it was compact in design, was organized poorly. Greg Rice fortunately made up for it with his great lectures. Book was no good - get a new one. Course layout was constructive. textbook, tests Question: Comments, suggestions on instructor performance very clear and thorough in lecture The class became extremely boring towards the end, 1.5 hours is long for a math class. Other than that everything was good. Taught in a relatable manner. Gave some interesting thought questions. He was very good at displaying the content on the board (it was clear, readable, plenty of examples, etc.) The homework problems and practice tests were mostly reflective of his actual exams, i.e., he told us what things were important to understand. Great job! He taught the concepts from basic principles and asked questions about what math concepts were still vague. He encouraged input and stood on a peer basis to relate ideas. Greg is an excellent teacher. Especially, considering he is a PhD student and not a full professor. Professor Rice knew the subject very thoroughly and effectively taught the subject. He was always willing to meet with me for extra help and it really helped me understand. Greg was an awesome teacher. Given the fact that the course was only five weeks and the material is itself 'complex,' I thought he did an awesome job in his explanations and examples. I don't think there could have been a better way to teach it besides how he managed to do it. homework, lecture His lectures were focused on the important parts of the material. He also focused very well on his mostly engineering-student class and the kind of math that would be useful for such a class. Actually worked out examples of what he just covered. Great! He absolutely knew the material. Very likeable which makes for a better learning atmosphere. lectures, instructor availability Page 2/2 University of Utah Custom Report for GREGORY RICE Teaching MATH 5900 Undergraduate Topics-Maths TPC sec: 1 2014 Summer There were: 7 possible respondents. I liked that we could work together and have time to discuss I really like learning how to use R programming in my classroom. It seems to be a useful tool in teaching stats and probability. It was an unexpected treat. Greg was excellent and spent time ensuring that all students understood. Totally enjoyed the class. The blend of theoretical statistics with programming was helpful for me. It might have helped me to have had some time for students to present their work during class to enable me to see more of the various strategies that can be implemented. Page 1/2 Most of the information talked about was learned in introductory undergrad Stats courses. I felt that the course was catered to teachers who haven't had statistics in years, and served as a refresher course. The worksheets and R assignments let us practice what we learned for the day. Question: Comments, suggestions on instructor performance He is very considerate of students' challenges outside of the classroom and makes accommodation for them for the sake of the students' success. The instructor adjusted the curriculum as needed to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. This was very beneficial to my learning. The instructor was willing to answer questions until students were satisfied with their own learning. I liked the detailed, specific notes that he gave. The R crash course was fun Greg made sure we weren't just plowing through material. He slowed down the lecture where necessary and answered questions. Greg was an excellent teacher - I would choose to take him again because he teaches so well. Totally enjoyed the class Greg is a good guy. He is extremely knowledgable about the content. Because of his advanced knowledge, I think it was tough for him to explain it effectively to some who did not understand the material. The instructor explained the reason behind the different theorems. The instructor went through the history of the evolvement of the math. Page 2/2
