This guide will provide you with simple tips to help reduce your environmental footprint, save money, and lead a healthier lifestyle. This can be done through your decisions on: Transport Power consumption Water use Sorting of waste Consumer choices You can have a positive impact by changing a few of your daily habits. RESCUE me Go paperless Reduce Bring a travel mug instead of using disposable coffee cups and save money! Carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water Buy food and products with minimal to no packaging Only print documents that are necessary to have in hard copy Print double-sided (duplex) Donate old clothes and shoes to vintage shops or charity Ask for online bills and bank statements. Talk to your bank and bill providers! Reuse Make that glass bottle your new water bottle Make a notepad out of your old documents or drafts of papers Save plastic food containers for storing leftovers Support recycled clothing, buy from local vintage or opp shops. A bus runs every 12-18 minutes to Caulfield. Walk Enjoy the fresh air and Monash’s beautiful gardens as you walk from residence to class. Walking also produces zero emissions, is good for your health, and leaves you feeling refreshed!! Just show your valid Monash University student or staff card to use the service. You board on a ‘firstcome, first-served’ basis. Buses fill quickly at busy times, so don’t be late if you want a seat. Bike Sign up to the Monash Bikeshare scheme. Monash has 70 red bikes available for students to use. You can ride the bikes in and around campus and simply lock up at any bike hoop at the end of your ride. The Bikery is the bike hub of the Clayton campus and provides students and staff with cheap maintenance, bicycle parts and accessories, refurbished bikes and general cycling advice. Open: Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm You can find the timetable on the Monash App. Public transport Melbourne has an extensive public transport system including buses, trains and trams. To plan your next journey, visit ptv.vic.gov.au Connect to Melbourne’s public transport via our bus loop at the front of the campus. The 601 bus connects Clayton Campus to Hungtingdale station and runs every 4 minutes during semester. Melbourne’s Night Network provides all night public transport on trains, trams and buses every weekend. The iUSEpass entitles you to a 50% discount on the price of an annual transport pass. It allows unlimited travel on trains, trams and buses for 365 days from the date of first use. Planning a day trip out of town? Flexicar allows members to “rent” a car. Quick tips for around your home Avoid using the dryer and hang your clothes in your room to dry Have short 4 minute showers Use the correct flush to save water Turn off lights during daylight hours Take a reusable coffee cup with you when you go out, and avoid disposable cups. Turn taps off when brushing your teeth Use less hot water Share the load - make friends with another resident and do your washing together to save water and energy Add an extra blanket to your bed in winter to keep warm Exit Melbourne water tastes great and is safe to drink Use reusable drying cloths instead of paper towel Unplug appliances not in use Turn off and unplug your computer before going to sleep Drink tap water instead of buying bottled water. Refill a reusable bottle and take it with you to class Keep a recycling tub in easy reach Close windows when using the heater Time table Don’t go chasing WATERfalls I’ve got the POWER When not in use, turn off lights and appliances, such as televisions, speakers and computers Unplug mobile phones and computer chargers when not in use Keep windows closed when the heater is on Close blinds or curtains on hot days to keep your room cool Open blinds or curtains on cold days to allow in sunshine to warm your room Use less hot water: wash your clothes in cold water and take shorter and cooler showers Avoid using lights if natural light is sufficient Phantom load Items that are plugged in still use energy even when they are powered off. This wasted energy is called a phantom load. In the bathroom Save water, take 4 minute showers Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth Report all leaking taps and faulty toilets to the MRS office Leave bathroom door open after showering to prevent mould growth Avoid using your toilet as a wastebin Computer Tips Laptops use 50% less energy than desktops Allow laptop computer to almost completely drain its battery before charging again Unplug laptop charger when not in use Shut down all computers when not in use Remember screen savers do not save any energy - in fact they use more! Enable energy saving settings on your computer Research the most energy efficient and environmentally aware computer companies before purchasing a new computer. See energystar.gov.au In the laundry Whenever possible, wait till you have a full load before using the washing machine. Do your laundry with a friend to help create bigger loads. When small loads are necessary adjust the water level accordingly Set the water temperature to cold, which helps reduce energy consumption In the kitchen Use cold water when possible as hot water requires a large amount of energy Use dishwasher only with full loads Melbourne water tastes great and is safe to drink What a WONDERFUL world Food, GLORIOUS food Shop green Say NO to plastic bags Carry a reusable compactable bag for shopping Food for thought Purchase cleaning products that feature concepts such as biodegradable, non-toxic, chlorine bleach-free, etc. Buy washable cloths rather than using disposable wipes or paper towels Use old clothes and wash cloths as cleaning cloths Buy local products grown or made in Melbourne Look for the organic label Buy Fairtrade whenever possible. It ensures that farmers are paid a fair price for their product. Buy seasonally. This reduces the environmental footprint of food grown out of season and the need for transportation.
