Keep windows closed when
the heater is on

your clothes in cold water
and take shorter and

Avoid using lights if natural
light is sufficient
Phantom load
Items that are plugged in still
use energy even when they are
powered off. This wasted energy
is called a phantom load.
In the bathroom
Save water, take 4 minute
showers
Turn off the tap while brushing
your teeth
Report all leaking taps and faulty
toilets to the MRS office
Leave bathroom door open
after showering to prevent
mould growth
Avoid using your toilet as
a wastebin
Computer Tips
Laptops use 50% less energy
than desktops
Allow laptop computer to almost
completely drain its battery
before charging again
Unplug laptop charger when not
in use
Shut down all computers when

Enable energy saving settings on
your computer

efficient and environmentally
aware computer companies
before purchasing a
new computer.

In the laundry
Whenever possible, wait till you
have a full load before using
the washing machine. Do your
laundry with a friend to help
create bigger loads.
When small loads are necessary
adjust the water level accordingly
Set the water temperature to
cold, which helps reduce energy
consumption
In the kitchen
Use cold water when
possible as hot water
requires a large amount
of energy
Use dishwasher only with
full loads
Melbourne water tastes
great and is safe to drink
What a WONDERFUL world
Food, GLORIOUS food
Shop green
Say NO to
plastic bags
Carry a reusable compactable bag
for shopping
Food for thought
Purchase cleaning products
that feature concepts such
as biodegradable, non-toxic,
chlorine bleach-free, etc.
Buy washable cloths rather
than using disposable wipes
or paper towels
Use old clothes and wash
cloths as cleaning cloths
Buy local products grown or
made in Melbourne
Look for the organic label
Buy Fairtrade whenever
possible. It ensures that
farmers are paid a fair price
for their product.
Buy seasonally. This reduces
the environmental footprint of
food grown out of season and
the need for transportation.
