Fenn Academy is a consortium of Northeast Ohio High Schools, Engineering Organizations and the Washkewicz College of Engineering at Cleveland State University FENN ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS A REPORT ON THE ACADEMIC YEAR ACTIVITIES FOR 2013 - 2014 MESSAGE TO OUR STAKEHOLDERS The Fenn Academy is a partnership among Cleveland State University’s Washkewicz College of Engineering, local school districts, government agencies and corporations. All of these groups work together to provide engineering related activities designed to encourage high school students to pursue a college education and careers in engineering. MISSION Nearly 1,200 students from 47 high schools in a five county region in Northeast Ohio benefited from our services in 2013-2014. Activities included free on-campus Engineering Activity Days, our annual Engineer For A Day job shadowing program, available faculty speakers, curriculum consultation with educators and student team competitions. We also collaborated in STEM related summer activities conducted at CSU by other organizations like College Now and the Great Lakes Science Center. Students received useful college preparatory information concerning scholarships, financial aid, The Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Honors College, Co-operative Education and more. Our goals are to: In 2013-2014 our new high school partners included Beachwood High School and St. Martin De Porres High School. We look forward to working with their students and encourage other high schools to contact us to participate in Fenn Academy’s free activities. The Washkewicz College of Engineering continued its successful enrollment surge. Many of our professors have noted the rising quality of incoming students, including greater numbers being accepted into The Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Honors College. These results inspired us to work even harder to maintain our preeminent role in producing some of Northeast Ohio’s finest engineering graduates. The support that we received from generous corporate sponsors, government agencies and individuals reflects well on Cleveland’s reputation for philanthropy. We are grateful for their shared vision to improve our community. We encourage you to read the contents of this report to see how all of us have worked together to achieve amazing results. Horizon Science Academy, part of a national charter organization, is located in the City of Cleveland and is predominantly comprised of CMSD students. More than 35% of students served in 2013/14 were minorities; 42% were female. Since 1999, the Engineer For A Day job shadowing program has provided opportunities for more than 1,100 students in grades 9-12 to spend a day with volunteer engineering sponsors. Students come from over 40 high schools in Northeast Ohio. We thank all of the organizations, both public and private, as well as sponsoring engineers for helping to prepare the next generation of engineering professionals. The Academy also has partnerships with schools in several diverse inner ring Cleveland suburbs including Lakewood, Shaker Heights, Garfield Heights, Cleveland Heights/University Heights and Euclid. In addition, the Fenn Academy currently serves two all female high schools including St. Joseph Academy and Beaumont High School. The Fenn Academy also partners with the HEARTS for Jesus Christ Christian Education Institute, a specialized school for home schooling families in grades 1-12. Additional schools are invited to join. In addition, our staff works with College Now, a college preparatory program for high school students, and houses their summer camp in Fenn Hall. The College collaborates with the ACE Mentor Program of Cleveland, a nationwide program that prepares students for STEM careers. The Washkewicz College of Engineering provides matching scholarship funds for ACE students who enroll in engineering at CSU. The College also partnered with the Perry Initiative, a national program that encourages girls to pursue careers in engineering and medicine, that hosted their program in Fenn Hall.
