COS SMOV Morning Update
10 July 2009
Agenda
• NUV Optical Alignment: Visits 5 and 7
• Upcoming Uplinks
• Upcoming revised COS SMOV Timeline
COS NUV Optical Alignment :
Visit 7 – Aperture and Pointing Sweep
•
On Wed 8 July:
– Fifth set of 7 NUV optical alignment visits
– Planned coordinated movement of aperture mechanism and POS-TARG pointing
offsets; obtain MIRRORA images at each of 9 positions
• POS-TARG positions applied with incorrect sign
• Aperture mechanism at default position for all exposures due to reset to absolute default
position for specified aperture value that is built into exposure commanding
• Would also affect visit 9 (plkanned for Sat)
– As result of separately planned intercept SMS; re-plan observations on Fri/Sat
• Implement revised exposure commanding that does not issue move-aperture command
• Update POS-TARG locations
• Execute new version of visit 7 (as visit 97) on Fri; execute planned visit 9 early Sunday
morning
• Issue new USE OFFSET (genslew) request for visit 97
• New mechanism updates for visit 97 as a result of analysis of visit 7 (ops request
required)
– After analysis of each of visits 97 and 9 may update nominal focus position,
aperture mechanism position, NCM1 position on OSM1, and (V2,V3) pointing
offset
Upcoming Uplinks
• Day 191: Fri 10 July
– Ops request for mechanism movement
– USE OFFSET 11469Z for 11469 visit 97 (executes early Fri morning)
• Day 192: Sat 11 July
– Ops request for mechanism movement
– USE OFFSET 11469E for 11469 visit 9 (executes early Sun morning)
– USE OFFSET 11469X for 11469 visit 9
• Day 194: Mon 13 July
– Ops request for mechanism movement
– USE OFFSET 11469Q for 11469 visit 99 (executes early Mon
afternoon)
– USE OFFSET 11469F for 11469 visit 99 (same as 11469Q)
– USE OFFSET 11469L for 11469 visit 99
– USE OFFSET 11469K for 11469 visit 99
– USE OFFSET 11492A for 11492 visit 1 (executes early Tues
morning)
Upcoming COS SMOV Timeline
• Day 191: Fri 10 July
– 11469 visit 97 of 12 (COS09) COS Fine Optical Alignment
• Repeat of Visit 7 with updated exposure commanding and revised POSTARG positions
• Use same astrometric target as 11469 visits 93 and 5
• Apply uplinked offset (same as for visit 7) to blind pointing position to
approximately center target in PSA; use same orient and same astrometric
guide stars (GS) as 1146993; no target acquisition
• Obtain MIRRORA image exposures at a series of 9 COMBINED
pos_targ displacements AND aperture mechanism offsets to characterize
off-axis optical image characteristics
• 1146997 191:17:17:50 - 191:19:04:07
• After analysis of imagery uplink refined nominal focus value, offset
pointing , and possible mechanism position updates via real-time contact
in 11469 visit 8 on early morning Sun (Day 193)
Upcoming COS SMOV Timeline
• Day 193: Sun 12 July
– 11469 visit 8 of 12 (COS09) COS Fine Optical Alignment
• s/c visit to facilitate real-time uplink of offset pointing information to be
used in as OFFSET 11469E in 1146909 (which follows within ~1 hour);
uplink mechanism position updates based on analysis of 1146907;
• 1146908 193:06:00:00 - 193:06:23:33
– 11469 visit 9 of 12 (COS09) COS Fine Optical Alignment
• Use same astrometric target as 11469 visit 93, 5, and 97
• Apply uplinked offset (from 1146908) to blind pointing position to
approximately center target in PSA; use same orient and same astrometric
guide stars (GS) as 1146993; no target acquisition
• Obtain MIRRORA image exposures with the aperture mechanism moved
to each of a series of 17 steps across the PSA field in X at the same Y and
17 additional exposures across the PSA field in Y at the same X - a cross
pattern. NOTE: the pointing always remains the same - nominally target
is centered in un-displaced aperture location; also perform get-ahead
target acquisition tests
• 1146909 193:07:42:17 - 193:10:59:59
• After analysis of imagery uplink refined nominal aperture mechanism
position update via real-time contact in 11469 visit 10 on Mon 13 July
(Day 194)
