SMOV Status & Planning Meeting Notes
7/09/09
-
Summary: STIS suspended again during attempted MIE Checkout and Recovery.
Analysis is underway and plans for recovery in time for next week’s STIS activities are being
discussed. WFC3 IR alignment/focus is nearing completion with good results. The UVIS
alignment mechanism is showing some non-linearity (or settling); the need for any further
adjustment is under discussion. COS target acq modes have been determined to be working
correctly, but the aperture mechanism commanding used in the NUV alignment activity needs
to be modified to properly carry out relative motion steps. An intercept SMS is being
prepared to accommodate both the need for a realtime STIS recovery and the opportunity to
repeat the COS visits with updated aperture mechanism commanding. ACS
functional/internals are progressing well, but part of the external CTE Monitor was lost to a
guidestar reacq failure during the night. Plans for restart of the NICMOS Cooling System will
be discussed at an ops briefing today.

IR alignment/focus
o Repeat of Visit 1 focus sweep occurs today
 Expect confirmation of successful alignment
UVIS alignment
o Focus moves showed some settling/non-repeatability
o Focus is established (at 2.5micron offset) with some
uncertainty
 Analysis ongoing
 Need to decide if currently achieved focus is OK or
additional work is required (timescale is 2+ weeks)
Mechanisms and detector internals
o Analyses ongoing
 Some evidence of some filter-wheel shift

 Anomalous aperture mechanism behavior
 Not moving the commanded number of
steps (indicated by LVDT)
 Need to look at SMGT to see if this
procedure was tested and how it worked
 Visit may need to be repeated
o No harm in letting next week’s visits
(2) occur
 But will need to be repeated
 Note: Post-meeting, the cause of the anomalous
behavior was traced to exposure routines that
command the aperture mech to home, thereby
undoing the relative moves commanded just prior to
the start of the exposure routine. It was quickly
determined that the exposure routines could be
modified to avoid the home commands, and used in
the next SMS (See Planning & Scheduling, below) –

 STIS Suspended During Attempted MIE Checkout
and Recovery (S. Arslanian, 07/09/09, 3:10am)
 During Ops. Request 18599 to verify the
functionality of the STIS MIE and recover STIS to
Operate mode, STIS Suspended due to a STIS STB
100 “Invalid CS FSW Mode for more than 10 minor
frames”.
 This occurred after STIS was transitioned from
Suspend to Operate and initial polling of the MIE
Status.
 Error was reported during attempted transfer of MIE
RAM Memory to STIS CS Buffer RAM using macro
OMIE2RAM.
 STIS CS Memory was then dump via Ops. Request
18608.
 Payload FSW and SISE will start investigation in the
morning.

by manually populating the OHSTTIME keyword in dvx files.
We received 3 more of these this morning, with the same error,
o the same workaround will be used for them.
Wednesday morning, we found that 4 ACS datasets from proposal 11369
errored
 due to missing dark reference files.
 The uncalibrated files for these were FTPed to the ACS team.
Overnight 2 COS exposures for fast-track proposal 11469 failed during
housekeeping database table updates
 but the files were fast-tracked and archived.
We have fast-track data coming for WFC3 proposal 11435 in the next 24
hours.
