Workshop A:
“Person-centered Planning & Practice”
In this workshop we will explore how to understand and to effectively manage countertransference. It is the clinician’s
countertransference, combined with views of the client that often create individual and systematic barriers to implementing
person-centered service delivery. These tendencies often foster burnout and frustration both for the client and the provider alike.
This presentation will assist participants by re-conceptualizing their role as “the fixer” to being one of “mere facilitator’ who can
better align with the client’s own strengths and preferences. Participants will learn how to let go of the need to control a client’s
recovery. The trainer has extensive experience working with adults who have major mental illness, addiction and developmental
disabilities. Relevant cases from his practice will be discussed.

Workshop B:
“Meditation and Self-Leadership in Clinical Practice”
Meditation is a tool that can be used in enhancing the clinician’s practice in a variety of ways. We will review the “nuts and bolts”
of how to develop and use meditation skills in clinical practice situations. We will learn how to employ these skills for behavior and
mood management, concentration, stress reduction, insight and overall self-mastery and self-leadership. Participants will have the
opportunity to practice some simple meditation techniques including breath control meditations from the yogic tradition.
We will also examine both indications as well as contraindications for using these skills in practice situations. No experience with
meditation is required.

Workshop C:
“Teaching the Next Generation of Social Workers”
This highly interactive seminar will address the strengths and challenges in the training of contemporary social workers. Generational changes are natural and supervisors must understand and appreciate the learning styles/motivations of those new students
and staff who are joining their agencies. The role of professional development, supervisory focus and engagement are crucial as
we look forward in our agency environments. The recruitment and retention of a solid workforce now and into the future that can
respond to new and emerging challenges in practice requires an understanding of the following:
1) The evolving needs, values and beliefs of these key groups: Millennials, Career Changers and Highly Experienced Workers;
2) The learning styles of adults;
3) The “developmental stages” of learners in social work;
4) New supervisory approaches/techniques to motivate new staff and students;

Workshop D:
“The Worn Path: Understanding the Journey of Suicide ”
There are many questions asked when a person commits suicide but none is more important than “WHY?”. Through the
examination of diaries, suicide notes and case studies we will do an “autopsy” (an intense psychological analysis) of the suicidal
mind. We will study the inner workings of the minds of suicidal persons as they travel through the journey from sadness to despair.
We also will look at the multi-dimensional aspects of suicide including biological, psychological, intrapsychic, interpersonal, sociological, cultural and philosophical/existential elements in the suicide event. The instructor will also offer explicit steps in the assessment and treatment of the suicidal individual.

Workshop E:
“Leadership in Human Services ”
A truly successful human service organization relies on strong leadership to create an organizational culture in which employees
can perceive their own value and practice within a specific, focused mission. This training will provide an overview of current
thinking about contemporary leadership in human services. We will look at various models of leadership, the historical context for
these models and we will advance the question: what are new leadership needs that exist now in light of recent changes and
future trends in human services delivery? Participants will be asked to draw upon some of their own experiences, both as leaders
as well as general participants in human service organizations. A new model for human services will also be presented for
consideration. This training is designed for all human service professionals. We will ask participants to assess their own leadership
potential as a way to anticipate the significant leadership shortage in human services that we anticipate in the next decade.
