"",--The Revised Student Leadership Development Board Resource Files An Honors Project (HONRS 499) by Beth L. Lively Dr. Barbara Jones :? . ~ /~~--I~~' c../'/}/ ---------------------'1 Ball State U . ersity Muncie, Indiana April, 1992 May, 1992 - / This project was undertaken to organize and improve the resources for Student Leadership Development Board. For the past several years, the board's resources have been disorganized to the point of discouraging their use by the group's members. My goals for the project included imposing internal organization upon each individual file, composing a written list of applicable resources in Bracken Library, and initiating the process of transferring the resources to computer disc. The completed project will be used to assist Student Leadership Development Board members in their planning of workshops for the Ball State community. - ! , .;.. r-(""' r, ~ -..:l . . . HOW TO USE THE RESOURCE FILES Welcome to the Student Leadership Development Board Resource Files. The files are intended to be used in developing consultant services, mini workshops, and conference sessions, as well as for your own personal information. Attached to this sheet is an index to the files and a listing of the available copies of each resource. The resources are categorized by subject. Once you know the topic you are interested in, look in the index. Find the number of the topic and turn to that file. You may browse through the file to find articles you can use. If you are in a hurry, the index also contains a listing of all the resources within each category. Scan through the titles and see which articles can apply to your topic. The articles are numbered with labels on the back. If you would like copies of a particular resource, first check the copy list. If there are copies, please take however many you need and write down how many copies are left. If there are no copies of the article you want, you can make a copy in the Student Life Office. Please return the resource to its proper position in the file. The Office of Student Life owns some books which may be of use in terms of developing consultant services and particularly in finding icebreakers. A list of these can be found behind these instructions in the first file of the top drawer. Thank you for using the files and please be considerate of others--return things to where they belong. - - -- INDEX Evaluations Observer Evaluation Forms Mini-Workshop Evaluation Forms Consultant Service Request Forms Transparencies Is Your Organization Successful? 100s Alcohol Awareness 200s Goal Setting 300s Evaluations 400s Ad visors 500s Career Skills 600s Apathy 7005 Motivation 800s Safer Sex 900s Time Management 10005 Programming/ Promotions 11005 Icebreakers 12005 Consultant Services 1300s Committees 14005 Interpersonal Communication 1500s DecisionMaking/ Conflict and Criticism 1600s Group Dynamics 1700s Effective Meetings 18005 Study Skills 19005 Greeks 2000s Change 2100s Self Esteem 2200s Delegation 23005 Leadership Training 2400s Styles of Leadership 25005 Qualities of a Leader 26005 Leadership Evaluation 2700s Stress / Wellness / Values 28005 Inspirational 2900s Wall Art 3000s Listening/ Nonverbal Communication 31005 Public Communication 3300s Di versi ty DOCUMENTATION OF PROJECT When I bE~gan this project, I intended to keep a journal to explain my process. However, the journal became repetitive. Within the different stages of this project, the work was essentially the same. Instead, I will outline the different stages in case anyone in Student Leadership Development Board ever needs to undertake this project in the future. I have kept a time log to give an indication of the time requirement needed by such a project. Stage One: This required reading through the files to get an indication of what was there. Many old resources (particularly in the Alcohol Awareness and Safer Sex files) were obsolete. Dr. Barbara Jones (the advisor for SLOB) approved resources that needed to be thrown away. .- Stage Two: After disposing of obsolete or overly long resources, I looked at what was left in each file and separated the articles into different categories within each file. Stage Three: This stage mostly consisted of typing up the indexes and listing the articles in each file by number. Stage Four: I obtained new resources by looking through the files of the Student Life personnel and by writing the Red Cross, calling the National AIDS Hotline, and going to the Health Center and the Delaware County Department of Health. Stage Five: The new resources were inserted in the files, requiring some reorganization. -.- The changes were typed up on computer disc. - Stage Six: I went to Bracken Library and looked through OPAC for available books, films, videos and sound recordings that applied to the categories we had in our files. These were alphabetized and typed up by category. The bibliographies can be found within the first two or three resources of each file. Stage Seven: I sorted tluough the copies and separated them by subject. The number of copies of each resource was recorded and typed on disc. In Search of Excellence, by Peters/ Waterman Shared ?vEnds, by Schrage Portman, Penelope A. EDHI--to become an R.A. School of Physical Education Tourney to the East, by Hesse College of Architecture and Planning Collard, Scott N. - . Landscape Architecture Courses do not teach leadership. The knowledge they provide allows individuals to be better decision makers. Leadership skills are developed, most commonly, as the result of experiences. Very few courses I know of ever allow a student to become involved at that level. I would suggest, therefore, that if a student were to seek a course which would develop such skills the first choice would be to ask, "what is my goal: what type of leader would I want to be?" and search out the courses which would provide them with the knowledge and professional skills their position would require . Secondly, I would require that they master those skills thoroughly! And thirdly, I would take my first steps in "leadership" by attempting to practice what I've learned. Leaders are not made or created. They are not produced. A leader emerges from, first .. within themselves, and, second, their social context. Knowledge of self is a prerequisite: there is nothing which can be substituted for it. Any education, therefore, which is intended to enhance leadership abilities must enable an individual to better understand themselves as human beings. It must then open their eyes to the connections they have with other human beings. We are more alike than we are disalike. This is a truth: it is also indicative of our need for acceptance and compassion. These are the greatest qualities for a leader to possess. Time management, motivations and group dynamics mean nothing if we cannot genuinely relate to one another as human beings at an experiential (not intellectual) level. - Re: readings etc ... I would heartily recommend that anyone who sought to achieve a leadership role in their life be fully informed about the real, basic, fundamental issues of human experience: life, death, art, creativity, spirituality (not religion specifically), psychology, culture, etc... ! It is essential for there to be a distinction between Being and Doing! A leader is a leader, first, because of what they are. A leader only becomes recognized, or receives the label, for what they do: they would not do if first they had not accepted who they were and had made a conscious acceptance of that fact (and its consequences). I can highly recommend one person's writings which may further explain, or provide insight to, this subject. His name is Joseph Campbell. His books are many, but I would highly recommend two: 1. An Open Life 2. The Hero's Tourney From these two sources can be derived a great deal of understanding about the meaning of human existence. There is a last ingredient which is essential: patience. Only time (and circumstances) can truly reveal the leader in anyone. I haven't seen a course about this listed in our catalogues. I'd be glad to discuss this further if you'd like. Please contact me at your convenience if you wish. Scott N. Collard Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture 5-1623 College of Business - Cirtin, Arnold L. Accounting Courses in Speech and English Composition National Review, books by Dr. Robert Schuller. Creviston, D. Tom Peters' videocassettes (Power of Excellence, In Search of Excellence, etc.). College of Fine Arts King, Glenna L. Art Any classes in communication skills. Learning to Work in Groups, by Miles. - Criminal Justice and Criminology Carson, Barbara A. Off the top of my head, I have no idea what courses I would recommend. If I researched this I would first look for courses in Sociology, Psychological Sciences, Counseling Psychology and Business. After acknowledging my lack of knowledge in this area, I would recommend students to read biographies and autobiographies of leaders whom they respect. Goldman, Irene C. English I recommend the Introduction to women's studies class for women--they can learn how not to be intimidated in certain situations. Henriksen, Donna English Speech (presentation), English/ composition, rhetoric, literature (knowledge base), Psychology--awareness of audience Any books or articles--wide reading base enabling communication in all fields. .- Hozeski, Bruce W. English Writing/Composition courses. A leader needs to be able to communicate accurately and effectively in written communications--not just spoken communications. Matuka, Yeno M. English I think any course dealing with evaluation and supervision as well as personnel management can develop leadership skills. Ange Cooksey Philosophy Probably the best "curricular" source of leadership skill development is the Department of Military Science. The courses in their program target the development of these skills, and even though their application in the military is anticipated, it is not necessary to benefit from the provided instruction. The Speech Department would be the next best source--the course in Discussion/Leadership (SPCH 330) would be a solid choice. Off the top of my head, no specific titles/authors come to mind--aside from Dyanetics (sp?) by L. Ron Hubbard. I have not read this, but I have been told it is supportive of leadership skill development. Self Esteem must be very positive. Never take oneself too seriously. Respect the rights of others. Treat all people equally. Learn to relax and pursue other interests for enjoyment. Be willing to make decisions and except responsibility for them. - Response Two Smaller courses that have more interaction between students. Courses that have labs associated with them, especially those that require students to work as a group in lab. Courses that require projects to be developed and carried out. These courses need not be in the primary discipline of the. student. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People The Bible. (Seriously! I do not consider myself a Christian, but The Bible has fabulous ideas. The really good leader doesn't have to demonstrate power--in fact, if you HAVE to be in charge, you're not leading. A good leader facilitates and makes the proper environment for things to happen. Jesus did this well. The Golden Rule is very important, too. Discussion is MOST helpful). Response Three No courses-just get involved with clubs and activities that will give you an opportunity to lead.
