Seaham, (minesweeper) picked u p five G e r m a n officers a n d 57 r a t i n g s w h o w e r e s u r v i v o r s of t h e recent a c t i o n i n t h e B a y of Biscay. On t h e same d a y t h e E i r e a n n s.s. Kerlogue (335 tons), on p a s s a g e f r o m L i s b o n to F i s h g u a r d , p i c k e d u p a f u r t h e r 164 survivors, w h o were l a n d e d a t C o r k on the following day. A t t h e west coast p o r t s of I t a l y , d u r i n g t h e w e e k e n d i n g t h e 1 6 t h December, 103,341 tons of stores w e r e d i s c h a r g e d , a n d a t the e a s t coast p o r t s 63,060 tons. By the 2 8 t h December, p o r t d i s c h a r g e s a t B a r i h a d been s t e p p e d u p to t h e level a t t a i n e d before serious d a m a g e w a s done by the e n e m y a i r r a i d e a r l y i n December. 8. T h e J u g o - S l a v P a r t i s a n H e a d q u a r t e r s r e p o r t t h a t 2,000 p a r t i s a n s a n d 5,000 c i v i l i a n s were successfully e v a c u a t e d from K o r c u l a I s l a n d by t h e 2 7 t h December. I n a d d i t i o n 600 refugees a n d 250 w o u n d e d r e a c h e d S o u t h I t a l y on t h e same day. Levant. 9. H . M . S / M Sportsman s a n k a c a i q u e on t h e 21st December a n d o n t h e 2 3 r d p r o b a b l y s a n k a 5,000-ton s h i p off L e m n o s . On t h e 2 6 t h H . M . S / M Sickle s a n k t w o caiques i n the ^ E g e a n . O n t h e 1st, U . S . c a r r i e r - b o r n e a i r c r a f t a t t a c k e d a force of t w o h e a v y cruisers and two destroyers about to enter K a v i e n g harbour. Both cruisers were s e r i o u s l y d a m a g e d iand a r e believed t o h a v e s u n k or r u n a s h o r e . I t is r e p o r t e d t h a t some n a v a l e s t a b l i s h m e n t s h a v e been t r a n s f e r r e d f r o m K i e l t o J u t l a n d as a r e s u l t of a i r r a i d s . U-boats. 18. A l a r g e g r o u p of U - b o a t s is o p e r a t i n g in m i d - A t l a n t i c n o r t h - w e s t of I r e l a n d (R), a n d a smaller c o n c e n t r a t i o n is r e p o r t e d west of C a p e F i n i s t e r r e . I n t h e I n d i a n O c e a n J a p a n e s e U - b o a t s a r e o p e r a t i n g i n t h e e n t r a n c e of t h e Gulf of O m a n , in t h e G u l f of A d e n , off B o m b a y a n d b e t w e e n the coast of S . D u r i n g t h e week U - b o a t s a r e r e p o r t e d to h a v e a t t a c k e d t h r e e s h i p s , one of w h i c h is k n o w n to h a v e s u n k . A s t r a g g l e r from a n o u t w a r d - b o u n d convoy w a s s u n k s o u t h of I c e l a n d (C) a f t e r h a v i n g been t o r p e d o e d twice. T h i s is t h e first t i m e since t h e e n d of October t h a t a s h i p h a s been t o r p e d o e d in the N . W . A p p r o a c h e s . A t a n k e r on p a s s a g e to A b a d a n w a s t o r p e d o e d i n t h e G u l f of O m a n but. reached p o r t , a n d a U . S . s h i p w a s t o r p e d o e d a n d a b a n d o n e d n o r t h ­ west of B e r m u d a . T h e s.s. Largs Bay (14,182 tons) w a s m i n e d in t h e B a y of N a p l e s a n d subsequently beached. T h r e e s h i p s in a n e a s t b o u n d c o a s t a l convoy w e r e s u n k by E - b o a t s off the L i z a r d . 20. A p r o v i s i o n a l figure December is 154,000 tons. for s h i p p i n g losses from enemy action during Protection of Seaborne Trade. 2 1 . D u r i n g t h e week e n d i n g the 2nd, 807 s h i p s in convoy a r r i v e d a t t h e i r d e s t i n a t i o n s . Of these, 280 s h i p s w e r e in ocean convoys a n d 527 in B r i t i s h coastal convoys. T h r e e escort c a r r i e r s , one a n t i - a i r c r a f t s h i p , 45 d e s t r o y e r s a n d 113 sloops, c u t t e r s , f r i g a t e s a n d corvettes ( i n c l u d i n g 18 U . S . d e s t r o y e r escorts), were employed on escort d u t i e s . F o u r home-bound ocean convoys, c o n s i s t i n g of 124 ships, a n d five o u t w a r d - b o u n d convoys, of 156 s h i p s , a r r i v e d a t t h e i r d e s t i n a t i o n s w i t h o u t loss. The south-westerly t h r u s t , w h i c h r e s u l t e d in the c a p t u r e of K a z a t i n o n t h e 3 0 t h December, a p p e a r s t o be d i r e c t e d t o w a r d s Z h m e r i n k a . E . bombs. R e p a i r s to t h i s l i n e took five days, a n d t h e first S t a d t b a h n t r a i n s s t a r t e d r u n n i n g only a t 0900 on t h e 2 9 t h November. D u r i n g t h e first t e n d a y s a f t e r t h e r a i d of t h e 2 2 n d / 2 3 r d November m a i n l i n e traffic to a n d f r o m t h e e a s t r a n i n t o t h e Schlesischer s t a t i o n , t h a t t o a n d f r o m t h e w e s t i n t o the. P o t s d a m e r s t a t i o n a n d to a n d f r o m t h e n o r t h - w e s t to t h e Wustermark station. (e) T w o of t h e m a i n s t a t i o n s in B e r l i n — t h e Schlesischer a n d G o e r l i t z e r s t a t i o n s — w e r e n o t d a m a g e d a t all a n d w e r e k e p t w o r k i n g d u r i n g t h e [26683] c whole week of r a i d s . A food c a t a s t r o p h e was only p r e v e n t e d by t h e fact t h a t these t w o s t a t i o n s k e p t o p e r a t i n g a n d took over t h e whole of t h e u n l o a d i n g of food t r a i n s w h i c h w a s formerly c a r r i e d out a t t h e Alexander Platz. ( N . B . — T h i s a r e a w a s d a m a g e d in l a t e r attacks.) (/) T h e Borse s t a t i o n w a s completely b u r n e d out. Damage to public buildings.—So m a n y public b u i l d i n g s w e r e destroyed or d a m a g e d d u r i n g the two a t t a c k s t h a t it is easier to list w h a t survives t h a n w h a t h a s been destroyed. T h e following a r e k n o w n to h a v e suffered — (a) T h e Technical H i g h School in C h a r l o t t e n b u r g h a s been completely b u r n e d out. (b) W a l k i n g w e s t w a r d s from t h e T e c h n i c a l H i g h School a l o n g t h e B e r l i n e r S t r a s s e a n d the B i s m a r c k s t r a s s e , t h e r e is not a single b u i l d i n g left a s f a r a s t h e C h a r l o t t e n b u r g O p e r a H o u s e , w h i c h h a s also been badly damaged. (c) T h e B r o a d c a s t i n g S t a t i o n a t t h e Adolf H i t l e r P l a t z h a s escaped d a m a g e , but all the h u t s r o u n d i t h a v e been b u r n e d out. (d) T h e O p e r a H o u s e a n d t h e U n i v e r s i t y in the U n t e r Den L i n d e n h a v e been damaged. (e) T h e D e u t s c h e B a n k b u i l d i n g s , i n c l u d i n g t h e vaults, have been completely b u r n e d out. (/) T h e P r o p a g a n d a M i n i s t r y (the former U . S . E m b a s s y ) h a s its u p p e r storeys t o r n off. (g) H i t l e r ' s residence (the old R e i c h s k a n z l e i ) h a s a w e d g e l i k e a slice of cake cut o u t of it. (A) T h e M i n i s t r y for F o r e i g n Affairs h a s been d a m a g e d by blast on t h e g a r d e n side a n d h a s been evacuated. (i) -The A i r M i n i s t r y h a s suffered from fire, b u t the b u i l d i n g s in W i l h e l m ­ strasse a r e still s t a n d i n g . (j) T h e G e s t a p o B u i l d i n g i n t h e A l b r e c h t s t r a s s e has been d a m a g e d ; i t w a s evidently h i t by a H . E . bomb a n d then c a u g h t fire. T h e whole of t h e g a r d e n side of the b u i l d i n g h a s been opened u p , a n d t h e o u t e r w a l l has crumbled a w a y . (k) T h e H a u p t a m t der S.S. (the former H o t e l P r i n z A l b r e c h t ) , i n c l u d i n g t h e cellars, h a s been b u r n e d out. (I) T h e P o l i z e i - P r a s i d i u m (in the A l e x a n d e r P l a t z ) h a s been d a m a g e d by t h r e e H E . bombs a n d its A d r e s s - B u r e a u completely destroyed. Section T w o of the P o l i z e i - P r a s i d i u m (a s e p a r a t e b u i l d i n g n e a r t h e Borse station, w h i c h deals w i t h foreigners) h a s been b u r n e d d o w n to the cellars. General Damage.—-The caused in the two r a i d s :— following list includes i t e m s of g e n e r a l damage (a) T h e m i l i t a r y g a r a g e s a n d wooden b a r r a c k s on the B e r l i n e r S t r a s s e opposite t h e T e c h n i c a l H i g h School h a v e been completely b u r n e d o u t a n d a l a r g e n u m b e r of m i l i t a r y cars, t r u c k s a n d c a t e r p i l l a r l o r r i e s w e r e destroyed. (b) A s one w a l k s e a s t w a r d s from the T e c h n i c a l H i g h School t h e d a m a g e on both sides of t h e C h a r l o t t e n b u r g e r Chaussee is very heavy. (c) T h e whole of t h e T i e r g a r t e n between the C h a r l o t t e n b u r g e r Chaussee, t h e L a n d w e h r C a n a l a n d t h e F a s a n e r i e Allee h a s been w i p e d o u t a n d trees a n d bushes t o r n u p . T h e only b u i l d i n g s left s t a n d i n g h e r e a r e t h e I t a l i a n a n d J a p a n e s e E m b a s s i e s . T h e T i e r g a r t e n s t a t i o n h a s been completely destroyed. (d) On e i t h e r side of the L a n d w e h r C a n a l as f a r as t h e P o t s d a m e r B r i d g e only t h r e e or f o u r b u i l d i n g s h a v e escaped t o t a l d e s t r u c t i o n . T h e rest, i n c l u d i n g T i r p i t z u e r 80 ( H . Q . of the A b w e h r ) a n d t h e N a v a l H . Q . (formerly t h e R e i c h s w e h r m i n i s t e r i u m B u i l d i n g ) , have been completely b u r n e d out. (e) S o u t h of the L a n d w e h r C a n a l t h e zone of complete d e s t r u c t i o n e x t e n d s t o t h e south over t h e L i i t z o w P l a t z as f a r a s the K l e i s t s t r a s s e . (/) P a r t i c u l a r l y heavy d a m a g e h a s been caused in t h e W i t t e n b e r g P l a t z a n d round t h e G e d e n k n i s k i r c h e . I n t h e A u g s b u r g e r s t r a s s e , for e x a m p l e , only two houses h a v e been left s t a n d i n g . (g) A n o t h e r c e n t r e of complete d e s t r u c t i o n in t h e B a y e r i s c h e r a r e a s t r e t c h e s from t h e K a i s e r a l l e e i n t h e west u p to the G o l z s t r a s s e i n t h e east. E v e r y t h i n g i n t h i s a r e a h a s been destroyed. (h) I n the n o r t h , t h e H a n s a d i s t r i c t is completely w i p e d o u t . (i) T h e M o a b i t a r e a h a s also suffered b a d l y . (j) T h e heaviest d a m a g e , however, h a s been caused i n t h e W e d d i n g d i s t r i c t , w h e r e t h e r e is p r a c t i o a l l y n o t h i n g left. (k) D e s t r u c t i o n h a s also been very heavy a l o n g a d i r e c t l i n e r u n n i n g f rom t h e G-esundtbrunner to t h e A l e x a n d e r P l a t z . H e r e only isolated houses h a v e been left s t a n d i n g , a n d even these w i l l p r o b a b l y h a v e to be p u l l e d down. One of t h e heaviest blows w a s t h e d e s t r u c t i o n of t h e food s u p p l y stores n e a r A l e x a n d e r P l a t z . (V) A m o n g hotels, t h e K a i s e r h o f h a s been d e s t r o y e d by blast. T h e B r i s t o l h a s been b u r n e d out. T h e H o t e l A d l o n , on t h e o t h e r h a n d , e s c a p e d damage. (m) T h e U n t e r D e n L i n d e n h a s also s u s t a i n e d c o n s i d e r a b l e d a m a g e , t h e M i l i t a r y M u s e u m a n d t h e so-called O l d P a l a c e b e i n g completely wrecked. (n) T h e B r i t i s h a n d F r e n c h E m b a s s i e s w e r e completely b u r n e d o u t a n d t h e A m e r i c a n E m b a s s y w a s d a m a g e d by b l a s t t o such a n e x t e n t t h a t i t w i l l h a v e t o be p u l l e d d o w n . T h e R u s s i a n E m b a s s y h a s n o t been damaged. (o) I t is difficult, if not impossible, t o a s c e r t a i n t h e t o t a l n u m b e r of b u i l d i n g s destroyed in western, south-western, n o r t h e r n a n d central Berlin, u p to a n d i n c l u d i n g t h e A l e x a n d e r P l a t z . F i f t y - t h r e e p e r cent, of i n f o r m a n t ' s personal, a c q u a i n t a n c e s h a v e h a d t h e i r houses completely b u r n e d out. G e r m a n s w o r k i n g i n t h e A . R P . services d e c l a r e t h a t a b o u t t w o m i l l i o n people w e r e bombed o u t of house a n d home d u r i n g these t w o r a i d s . Raid on 2Qth/27th November. Main areas of concentration.—In t h e r a i d of t h e 2 6 t h / 2 7 t h N o v e m b e r t h e a r e a bombed w a s t h e w e s t of S i e m e n s t a d t , w h e r e t w o of t h e b i g g e s t f a c t o r y s h o p s w e r e completely b u r n e d out, a n d t h e Tegel d i s t r i c t . Damage.—Points of d a m a g e include t h e following :—: (a) T h e R h e i n m e t a l l - B o r s i g p l a n t i n Tegel h a s suffered v e r y severe d a m a g e a n d u p to m i d - D e c e m b e r c i v i l i a n w o r k m e n h a v e n o t been allowed i n t o the factory a n d all w o r k e r s h a v e been p l a c e d u n d e r m i l i t a r y control. Frankfurt.—In the a t t a c k on t h e 2 0 t h / 2 1 s t December severe d a m a g e w a s caused i n t h e d i s t r i c t s of Eockenheim a n d S a c h s e n h a u s e n , t h e s u b u r b of Offenbach a n d i n the centre of the city between t h e O p e r a H o u s e a n d t h e m a i n P o s t Office i n t h e N o r t h a n d the river i n t h e S o u t h . I n Bockenheim the r a i l w a y s t a t i o n a n d t r a m w a y depot were a m o n g t h e b u i l d i n g s affected. A l o n g t h e Bocken­ h e i m L a n d S t r a s s e (the m a i n exit from t h e centre of t h e city N . W . ) for a c o n s i d e r a b l e d i s t a n c e from t h e O p e r a H o u s e , over t h r e e - f o u r t h s of t h e b u i l d i n g s were destroyed or r e n d e r e d u n i n h a b i t a b l e . M o s t of t h e l a r g e w a r e h o u s e s i n t h e w e s t h a r b o u r were b u r n t o u t a n d i t w a s said t h a t as m u c h as four-fifths of t h e S a c h s e n h a u s e n d i s t r i c t w e r e destroyed. Innsbruck.—Two a t t a c k s were m a d e by a i r c r a f t based in t h e M e d i t e r ­ r a n e a n t h e a t r e on t h e 15th a n d 19th December. I n t h e first, severe d a m a g e w a s caused to t h e goods y a r d s , w h e r e some 15 t r a i n s loaded w i t h w a r m a t e r i a l w a i t i n g to leave for I t a l y w e r e wrecked. On t h e 19th December d i r e c t h i t s on t h e m a i n s t a t i o n killed the s t a t i o n - m a s t e r a n d m a n y r a i l w a y officials. T h e most i m p o r t a n t f e a t u r e was, however, the r e n d e r i n g useless of 20 of t h e m a i n line electric locomotives used on t h e B r e n n e r route, a n d t h e d e s t r u c t i o n of the r a i l w a y a d m i n i s t r a t i v e offices.
