History of AshanƟlly
THE ASHANTILLY CENTER
The Ashan lly Center, located in Darien, GA, was originally
the home of Thomas Spaulding. Spaulding was a na ve Georgian
and legislator whose ancestors traveled to Georgia from Scotland in the 16th century. His house, some me referred to as “Old
Tabby” due to the nature of its construc on, burned in 1938. The
home was later rebuilt by Bill Haynes whose ongoing project at
Ashan lly became a home for re ring family members to retreat.
The Haynes house, constructed in 1940 in the tabby style, s ll
stands today.

con nues to operate a le erpress, the profession of the late
Bill Haynes, and offers le erpress classes. The Ashan lly staff
are always organizing a plethra of art, books, and documents
le behind by the Haynes family. The history of Ashan lly is
