RESEARCH INTERESTS
My program of research focuses on: (a) psychological, spiritual/existential, and physical health
consequences of trauma and stressful life events (e.g., military combat, bereavement, community
violence, and serious/chronic illness); (b) clarifying risk/protective factors for posttraumatic
stress disorder, complicated grief, and related adjustment problems; and (c) enhancing clinical
interventions and assessment practices for individuals and families dealing with these issues. My
work is influenced by positive psychology and often addresses the importance of finding and/or
restoring meaning following trauma or other challenging experiences in life. At present, many of
my projects are devoted to testing/validating the construct of moral injury as it relates to military
Veterans and other trauma-exposed professional groups.
