September 9, 2008 Minutes

1. Welcomed new members

Approved Prof. Alan Weinstein replacing Prof. David Forte (2 years)
Approved Prof. Chieh-Chen Bowen replacing Prof. Peter Meiksins
(2 years)
Approved Prof. George Chatzimavroudis replacing Prof. Jorge Gatica
for Fall 2008
3. Approved Prof. Joanne Goodell to replace Prof. Ronald Beebe (1 year)
4. Approved the Minutes of April 1, 2008; postponed approval of Minutes of May 6,
2008.
5. Received an overview of Council responsibilities from Dr. William Bailey,

Council members were asked to review the bylaws and to propose changes
at the October 7, 2008 meeting.
7. Dean Vera Vogelsang-Coombs outlined her priorities for the College of Graduate
Studies.
8. Elected Professors Elliot Ingersoll and Crystal Weyman as the Graduate Council
representatives to the Learning Alliance for Higher Education. Prof. Cheryl
Delgado & Prof. Bill Bowen were elected as alternates.

9. Received an overview of the Ad-hoc Committee on Graduate Assistants.

Council members were asked to read the report and prepare to discuss it at the
October 7th Council meeting.
10. Received an overview of the Graduate Council’s responsibility in the area of
Program Review from Vice Provost Gitanjali Kaul.
Received copies of Program Reviews for the School of Social Work and the
Departments of History, Psychology, Anthropology, and Modern Languages.
Council members were asked to read the reports and be prepared to discuss it at
the October 7th Council meeting.
11. Selected Professors Jeff Karem and Bob Mensforth to serve on the CLASS
Review Committee for the Departments of Philosophy & Black Studies.
Professor Charles Hersch will also serve.
Information & Applause Items:
•
Chancellor Fingerhut will be on campus on November 4th & 5th, 2008.
•
Learning Alliance dates are September 30th to October 2nd for individual
interviews; October 29 (evening) and October 30th (all day) at the Cole Center
•
Chancellor Fingerhut has approved the Master of Arts in Global Interactions
•
Graduate applications and graduate enrollments are up for Fall 2008.
•
September 24th celebration -- $1.525 million match from the Wolsteins for
scholarships
The next meeting is Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. in the Graduate College
Conference Room.
