Global Recognition
On 18 February 2014, the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN), in partnership with the Global Smart Grid
Federation (GSGF), launched its first Award of Excellence international competition to recognize excellence in smart grid
projects around the world.
The ISGAN Award of Excellence showcases leadership and innovation in smart grid projects around
the world to improve global understanding of the value that smarter, cleaner electric grids can offer.
It’s all about the Consumer!
For this inaugural competition, ISGAN will recognize excellence in “Consumer Engagement and Empowerment." Just as the
Internet and smart phones empower individuals and businesses to engage in a global digital economy, smarter electricity
systems are empowering energy consumers to engage with their electricity service providers. And that can translate into
better management of electricity usage and cost for consumers, reduction of costly losses for utilities, and the creation of
new value for both. The engagement and empowerment of consumers is one of the most important components of the
smart grid vision around the world, and there is a critical need to identify and replicate proven ideas.
The Awards
 Pilot, demonstration, and deployment projects are eligible, including established programs that embody the complete
cycle of consumer engagement and empowerment: awareness, education, empowerment, satisfaction, etc.
 Although projects will be judged on their application of consumer engagement and empowerment principles, the
primary focus of the overall project can be on something else, such as deployment of advanced metering infrastructure
(AMI), implementation of demand side management, or reduction of non-technical losses.
Nominations Period Opens
 The official rules of the ISGAN Award of Excellence, submission forms, and other guidance are available on the
ISGAN website at www.iea-isgan.org/award2014. Submissions are due by 27 March 2014 (new deadline).
Submissions will be judged by a jury of international experts assembled by ISGAN in partnership with the GSGF.
 The jury will select one or more winning projects based on five key criteria: potential impact, consumer benefit, potential
for replication, level of innovation, and alignment with ISGAN’s mission to advance “key aspects of smart grid policy,
technology and related standards.”
 Winners will be contacted in mid-April and invited to participate at an awards ceremony at the Fifth Clean Energy
Ministerial meeting in Seoul, Korea on 12 May 2014. Winners will also be recognized in ISGAN products and proceedings.
 ISGAN plans to hold additional Award of Excellence competitions in the future on other smart grid topics.
