Course Description
This course provides an overview of analog and digital audio, introduces students to basic
recording/mixing tools and topics include: microphone and mixer preparation, studio and computing
capture/edit. Also addressed: project management, assets, and project.
Course Topical Outline
MUS 404 is an overview of analog and digital audio. Topics will include microphones, mixers, recording
and editing software, and studio procedure.
The following topics will be covered in MUS 404:
Elements of Sound
Analog versus Digital Recording
Microphones
Digital Editing
ProTools Software
Course Goals and Objectives
• To prepare the student for an entry level position in the recording industry
• To prepare the student for an internship in the recording industry
• To obtain the common vocabulary of the recording industry
• To establish a commitment to hi-fidelity audio
• To establish a thorough competence in signal flow in the recording studio

Class Attendance Policy
The most important component of a student’s success in MUS 404 is attendance. A significant amount of
your training will be done in class. You are expected and required to attend each class meeting, be on
time, be prepared, and to participate. Class starts promptly at 2:30 PM Wednesday and Friday. If you
are tardy, it is your responsibility to get your name on the roll sheet immediately after that day’s class is
over. You will be counted tardy for that class. Two tardies will be counted as one absence. If you have a
written excuse for an absence or a tardy, please attend to it immediately after class on your first class
back. You may email me in advance if you are going to miss a class. That email does not count as your
excuse. Please bring your written excuse on your first class back. If you miss 20% of the classes (6),
regardless of whether they are excused or not, you will automatically fail. If you reach this number
before Friday, October 24 at 4:59 PM (last day to withdraw from a course) you will be advised to drop the
course. If you do not drop the course you will automatically fail.
Absences will be excused for the following reasons:
• A death in the immediate family
• A documented family emergency
• A documented personal emergency
• A documented illness
• A documented University or Department function
Assessment
The final grade for this course will be determined using the following percentages:

75% Five Projects (15% each)
25% Final Project (DUE: Monday, December 7 at 3:30 PM)
MAKE-UP EXAM and TEST POLICY
A make-up test or final exam will be given under the following circumstances:
• A death in the immediate family
• A documented family emergency
• A documented personal emergency
• A documented illness
• A documented University or Departmental function
In extraordinary circumstances a student may be given the test in advance of the scheduled class period.
All make-up tests or exams must be completed within one week of the scheduled test or exam.
LATE WORK PENALTY
Assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the day they are due. Late work will not be
accepted. If you are going to be absent you may turn your work in early OR email it to Dr. Durant before
2 PM of the scheduled due date.
Important Dates
Last Day to Add a Course or Change to Audit: Thursday, August 20 (5:59 p.m.)
Last Day to Drop from a Course: Friday, October 23 (4:59 p.m.)
Holidays: Monday, September 7 (Labor Day); Thursday and Friday, October 8 and 9 (Fall Break);
Wednesday, November 25 - Sunday, November 29 (Thanksgiving Holidays)
Last Day of Classes: Friday, December 4
COURSE ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the following days: 9/4, 9/18, 10/2, 10/16, 10/30, and
11/18. The final project is due Monday, December 8 by 3:30 PM.
Changes in Course Requirements
Not all classes progress at the same rate thus course requirements might have to be modified as
circumstances dictate. You will be given written notice if the course requirements need to be changed.
