Course Description This is the second semester of a two semester sequence designed to familiarize students with the rudiments of formal analysis, counterpoint, and practical orchestration for 18th, 19th, and 20th century musics–particularly emphasizing classical, jazz, pop, and selected world-music styles. Course Topical Outline The following topics will be covered in MUT 313: Principles of Two-Voice Counterpoint Principles of Species Counterpoint Invention Sinfonia Prelude Fugue Principles of Three-Voice Counterpoint Elements of Form Late 19th Century Harmony The 20th Century and Beyond Analysis Orchestration and Arranging Course Goals and Objectives • To understand and establish the discipline required of a professional musician • To obtain the common vocabulary of the community of professional musicians • To establish a thorough competence in music skills • To establish advanced skills in four-part writing in chorale and keyboard style • To establish advanced skills in musical analysis • To understand the principles of counterpoint • To establish advanced skills in arranging and orchestration • To incorporate the piano as a tool for musical study • To incorporate technology as a tool for musical study • To understand the disciplines of and become proficient in composition and improvisation Course Pre-requisites / Co-requisites A grade of “C” or better in MUT 312. 1 Course Materials Workbook Counterpoint, Fourth Edition. Kent Kennan. 1999. Class Attendance Policy The most important component of a student’s success in MUT 313 is attendance. A significant amount of your training will be done in class. You are expected and required to attend each class meeting, be on time, be prepared, and to participate. Class starts promptly at 10:10 AM Monday and Wednesday. If you are tardy, it is your responsibility to get your name on the roll sheet immediately after that day’s class is over. You will be counted tardy for that class. Two tardies will be counted as one absence. If you have a written excuse for an absence or a tardy, please attend to it immediately after class on your first class back with the instructor of the class that you missed. You may email your instructor in advance if you are going to miss a class. That email does not count as your excuse. Please bring your written excuse on your first class back with the instructor of the class that you missed. If you miss 20% of the classes (6), regardless of whether they are excused or not, you will automatically fail. If you reach this number before Friday, April 1 at 4:59 PM (last day to withdraw from a course) you will be advised to drop the course. If you do not drop the course you will automatically fail. For each class that you have an unexcused absence, the following deductions will occur from your final average: 1 class = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = automatic failure. Absences and tardies will be excused for the following reasons: • A death in the immediate family • A documented family emergency • A documented personal emergency • A documented illness • A documented University or Department function Assessment The final grade for this course will be determined using the following percentages: *** Attendance (See class attendance policy above) 100% Six Projects Late Work Penalty Written homework assignments are to be turned in at the beginning of class on the Wednesdays they are due. Late written homework assignments will not be accepted. If you are going to be absent you may turn your work in early, OR scan the work and email it to Dr. Durant before the start of class of the scheduled due date, OR take a digital photograph(s) of the complete assignment and email it to Dr. Durant before the start of class of the scheduled due date. Course Assignments Assignments are due at the start of class on the following Wednesdays: 1/27, 2/17, 3/2, 3/23, 4/6, and 4/27. January 27: Counterpoint and Binary Forms February 17: Chopin Analysis March 2: Brahms Analysis March 23: Counterpoint April 6: Original Composition in Romantic or Later Style April 27: Arrangement and Orchestration of an Original Composition or a Mutually Agreed Upon Work 2 Changes in Course Requirements Not all classes progress at the same rate thus course requirements might have to be modified as circumstances dictate. You will be given written notice if the course requirements need to be changed.
