He is originally from Clifton, IL (small town 15 miles south of Kankakee).
He comes to WIU from Ohio University in
Athens, OH.
He will advise students in football, swimming, diving, track, and volleyball, but he can potentially work with an athlete in any sport.
Advisors and the majors they advise were introduced.

SOAR Walk Through – Michelle a.
Password & User Names
Call Michelle if you need the printer password; there are different user names for each area.
ST 307 and 331 (COEHS, LEJA): the user name is stipesreg
If you are in a computer lab with its own local printer your user name is registration.
2 nd
floor Library (COFAC): username: libraryreg2
3 rd
floor library (COEHS): Libraryreg3
Molly’s cell phone number hasn’t changed; please call her if a student needs permission to get into an honors class.
b.
Enrollment Deposit
Students can pay with cash, check, or money order at check ‐ in
If you communicate with students prior to SOAR, remind them about the available payment methods.
Students who have paid
their deposit will have a ‐ $100 on the ADVG screen.
The Admission Office is calling students to remind them about paying.
If paying at registration, Sarah Jewell or Larry Tingley will take encumbrances off rather than waiting for checks to clear.
Students can’t use credit cards this year, but Sarah is exploring the possibility for the future.
There are ATMs in Corbin Hall and the Union where families can get cash.
c.
Learning Outcomes Survey Alias
Sarah is still working on this.
Michelle will e ‐ mail it when it is completed.
d.
Guidebook App
The Guidebook app contains a schedule of events for students and parents and can be downloaded to a smart phone.
Sarah Jewell hopes to have it running within the next couple of days.
To find WIU, put wiuorientation in the search engine.
This app can also be put on Ipads.
Michelle will see if she can get an electronic copy of what will be given to all families.
There will not be a big fall orientation brochure this year; instead, Fall orientation is going to be part of the Guidebook app.
RAs will have paper copies available on each floor.
Look at Ohio State to see what WIU’s Guidebook will probably look like.
e.
Advising Information Table at Check ‐ In
Michelle thanked those who volunteered to help with the advising information table at check ‐ in.
If there are other people from your area participating, please give them the schedule and tell them to go the Corbin Hall first floor lounge area (by pool table) where they will be directed where to go.
Theo will not be participating at check ‐ in this year, but he has provided letters to give to students who have questions.
Vicki will also send information
to Bryan to give to students with questions about biology, similar to what Theo is doing.
Theo and Vicki have agreed to be available by phone if needed.
It was hoped to be able to have tables for change of major, placement information, and math and nursing questions in the same area as last year, but the Brazilian students are using that room for dinner.
Instead, tables will be put along the wall in the pool table area.
Molly and ROTC will be in the back of the Grand Ballroom, during check ‐ in.
It is hoped to be able to put the Advising Information table by the Corbin Hall student mailboxes.
In the past, orange folders were given at program check ‐ in.
This year, students will get the folders right before their major meeting.
There was a need to develop a form for students to know their math placement, foreign language placement, and if they have been recommended to test.
Students who have not sent a placement form will have a “P” on the form indicating they need to fill it out.
Forms with a star in the middle of a circle means there is a question about the major.
Every student will get a form at check ‐ in.
The form is strictly informational and it intended for student use only.
In the orange folder, there will be an orange math sheet with transcripts attached.
After registration, put the orange sheet and the transcripts in the student’s advising file.
Three sheets of paper will also be in the file and are to be given to students: a pink writing appeal sheet, a tan math placement form, and a green freshmen checklist collaborated on by colleges.
Please
collect the orange file folders and give back to UAASC because they can be reused next year.
Permission cards will be stapled to the math sheets like last year so they can be flipped over when registering.
There will be 6 lines in the Grand Ballroom where students will pick up their orange folders after lunch.
Advisors in advising areas need to look at where they might stand to welcome students and direct them into their areas.
UAASC will not be in the library this year, just COFAC and
COEHS.
There will be a GA in Stipes directing students to OAS and COBT rooms.
In Morgan, there was someone on the sidewalk last year directing students.
COFAC and COEHS need to have an advisor/GA stationed inside the library to direct students to the proper location for their major meeting.
An O ‐ Team student will be assigned to each college and will stay with their area for every SOAR.
The Honors College will not be used this year to sort folders.
The July 15 ‐ 16 reserved SOAR date has been cancelled and removed from the schedule so calendars can be opened up on those dates.
On the evening of Day 1, the Admission Office will email the master student list with no ‐ show names removed to the advisors and UAASC.
Representatives to receive the list are:
COFAC: Jennifer Grimm
Honors College: Molly Homer
CAS: Caryn Morgan
COEHS: Missy Phillips
COBT: Chris Ramsey
Jennifer Tibbits does not need a copy
III.
August COAA meeting
The August COAA meeting has been cancelled and will be incorporated into the August 20 th
All ‐
Campus Advising Workshop.
CSI training will be provided by Sara Lytle at the workshop.
The successful completion of the CSI training is required before advisors can get their advisees’ CSI information.
Please make sure your colleagues are aware of this important training opportunity.
Jane Coplan is taking ideas for other workshop topics.
The advising workshop will be in the MCC, similar to last year.
More details will be available closer to the date
IV.
ILACADA Conference Update
Five advisors attended ILACADA and four of them presented on the self ‐ assessment process with an external reviewer.
ILACADA asked that WIU advisors return next year to give a follow ‐ up report
with recommendations, action plan, etc.
This type of networking and collegial collaboration are why WIU needs to remain active in ILACADA.

Program Change Announcements
Last spring, chemistry changed Chem 429 from a 4 to a 3 hour class.
Students from old catalogs are now finding they are 1 hour short if they are
graduating with a chemistry minor.
Student appeals through CAGAS have been granted.
Students with a chemistry minor graduating under an old
catalog will have this same problem.
Let Jennifer know if you have a student in this situation and she will help.
G ‐ Com is changing to a comprehensive program.
Andi does not have a final catalog copy yet.
There is no minor required, but there is room to have one, if
desired.
There are several construction management classes students can take to find out if they are interested in the major.
ET 105 and Construction 132 (building trades) have no pre ‐ requisites.
Call
Andi if you have students who want in either class.
Construction 230 is a blueprint and document reading class which would be good for students interested in an engineering major.
Theatre 172, an acting class, is not restricted to theatre majors.
Marching band and concert choir are also open to all students.
If students want to be in plays, they don’t have to be theatre majors.
Auditions are the first week of school and students who are interested should call the theatre department the first week of school to audition.
Military Science 111 is open to all students and is encouraged as a general leadership class
These classes should be announced in your major meetings since this will not be discussed in the large group time.

College/Area News – Council Members
Students have been receiving e ‐ mails from Honorsociety.org.
This company didn’t obtain a list from
WIU.
Molly and Sue have gotten phone calls from students and parents.
You must pay dues every
6 months to join; you have to read through to see it is not affiliated with WIU in any way and probably is not legitimate.

New Business
Pathways Learning/Living Community
Currently, 66% of the males who have requested the Pathways LLC and 89% of the females have declared major.
Originally, the purpose of the Pathways LLC was for undeclared students.
The number of declared students who have signed up for that floor has been a surprise.
This development has altered how the planning committee views the purpose.
We are taking a more holistic view of exploration to better fit the type of student requesting Pathways.
Major area advisors could have students interested in this floor, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they are going to switch majors, just that they might be interested in learning more about career options within the major or self ‐ exploration.
Signing up for a learning/living floor doesn’t mean that a student will automatically be assigned to that floor.
Decisions about who will live on these floors will be finalized in July.
Housing is now doing direct marketing to UA students to increase interest in the Pathways floor.
UAASC, Career
Development, and the Counseling Center are developing the Pathways’ program.
The sub ‐ committee is looking at Strength Quest as an assessment to see how students work with other people, in addition to career exploration.
If interested in finding out more about Learning Living Communities, contact either Michelle Oaks or A.J.
Lutz.
Both have expressed interest in expanding the Learning Living Communities on campus.
Jane Coplan thought they were trying to expand the nursing floor to include other pre ‐ professional programs.
Summer Tutoring flyer
Julie is updating the tutoring icon on the WIU app with summer tutoring information.
She is running into difficulties since the icon is only set up for group or drop ‐ in formats.
This needs to be expanded to include telephone and online tutoring formats.
The website needs to be recreated to show these options.
If you know of other summer tutoring in your departments, please send Julie that information.
Jennifer Tibbitts will send Julie a link to the Writing Center online tutoring information.
There will be select summer tutoring offered by two tutors.
Flyers have gone out on the advising list serve.
If you know faculty who are teaching in any of
the courses listed, please pass the information on to them so they can share with their students.
Tutors will be available by phone or e ‐ mail.
This is a pilot
program which may expand into other areas in the future, especially BGS.
Julie distributed gen ed handbooks.
The Gen Ed handbooks will be in the students’ draw bags at
SOAR.
The O ‐ Team members have been told to make sure students bring it to registration.
Advisor T ‐ shirts will be available for pick up next Monday from Ember.
Ember paid for these so make checks out to her.
Anyone interested was invited to go on the SOAR tour with Jane and the GAs.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:45 AM.
Respectfully submitted,
Debbie Carithers
