With pleasure we present our second annual Honor Roll of Donors.
Through this publication, the University expresses its appreciation for
all those who have made charitable gifts to support USA’s mission and
to provide the margin of excellence necessary to achieve true greatness
as a University. This report recognizes all donors who have made a gift
during fiscal year October 1, 2003 to September 30, 2004 and all of
our donors who have made charitable gifts over the years totaling
$25,000 or more thus qualifying for permanent inclusion in our annual
Honor Roll of Donors.
We thank each of you for the great support you have given us this past
year. Your philanthropy has enabled us to achieve a record year of
giving of $11,550,571 and a record number of donations of 4,639. The
strength of your gift support shows that this University has matured
and is of such quality to gain your confidence and your investment in
her future.
I call your attention especially to the many examples of gifts which are
highlighted through this book. Virtually, every part of the University –
academic, athletic, and the USA health care system – has benefited
from your support in so many different ways. Thank you for entrusting
us with your gift support and we publicly thank all who have given to
the University during the year covered by this report.

In this second edition of the USA Honor Roll of Donors,
we look back on a most generous year. So many
employees, alumni and community friends have given
untiringly of their time, talents, and resources to further the mission of the
University of South Alabama. Your gifts, both large and small, to our academic
programs, to athletics, to our hospitals, and the campuses of the University of
South Alabama have truly made a difference. In this publication, we express our
gratitude to all of you for your dedication to and love of the institution.
It is through the continued support of our many friends and the University
family that we will continue to provide quality educational programs, the best in

in this publication. Donors whose cumulative or one time gift of $25,000 or more will be permanently
listed in this publication each year whether or not they choose to make an additional gift.
Donors who generate matching gift funds through their employer will receive gift and recognition
credit for their own gift and recognition credit for the match. The matching gift company will receive
gift and recognition credit for the amount of their matching gift.

Dr. Jack Hays, a retired
ophthalmologist, ear, nose
and throat specialist, and
allergist, and his wife,
Courtney, have made one of
the largest single gifts in the
University’s history to
support USA’s programs in
health care related fields.
The Hays’ bayside
property in Montrose has
been deeded to the
University and the Hays will
continue to live on the
property until such time as
they no longer desire to do
so. At that time, the
property will be sold and the
funds used to create the “Courtney and Jack Hays Endowment Fund for
Excellence in Medical Sciences” to support USA’s health related programs in
the colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health Professions. Giving the
University discretion over how the funds will be used, Dr. Hays said, “They
can set it up any way that can help the students best.”
Dr. and Mrs. Hays have, throughout their lifetime, set an example of
philanthropy. Throughout his career, Dr. Hays made more than 40 medical
missionary trips to underdeveloped countries such as India, Africa and Puerto
Rico, usually accompanied by his wife. Of the gifts to USA, Mrs. Hays said
they reflect their personal philosophy of philanthropy. “We want to help
people,” said Mrs. Hays. “That is what’s important to us.”
University of South Alabama
Point Clear Charities Inc., a local philanthropic
organization, has sponsored USA’s cancer research efforts
for more than a decade.
The organization is responsible for generating
approximately $2.5 million in support of the chair and
other projects, including $200,000 in contributions to
Project Hope, a program benefiting pediatric cancer
patients at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital.
The most recent beneficiary of the charitable group,
Joseph LoCicero III, M.D., director of the Center for
Clinical Oncology at the University of South Alabama
Cancer Research Institute, has been named to the Point
Clear Charities Chair in Cancer Research. Dr. LoCicero
brings more than 30 years experience in patient care,
research and teaching to USA’s Cancer Research
Institute.
According to LoCicero, the academic mission of the
USA Cancer Research Institute makes it unique to the
Gulf Coast. “Our focus is not only to provide the best
possible care to cancer patients in the region but to teach
the next generation of physicians, and to develop the
next treatments and tools for the future management of
the disease cancer.”
Point Clear Charities board member Camille Corte
said the University’s emphasis on cancer research led her
group to begin supporting the institution more than a
decade ago.
“So many of our families had been touched by cancer,
and we realized that research was the answer,” she said.
“Treatment is important, but we were really interested in
the cure or the prevention of the disease.
“I don’t know of a family that hasn’t been affected by
cancer in some way, and to our group that was quite
important.”
According to Dr. Joseph Busta, vice president for
development and alumni relations, the organization’s
steadfast support has helped the University better
position itself as a leader in cancer research and
treatment.
“Point Clear Charities’ early investment in the cancer
research chair and Project Hope helped lay the
foundation on which the USA Cancer Institute was
built,” he said. “The legacy of this organization will
continue to impact our region as the Institute works to
improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their
families.”
Endowed chairs, such as the one supported by Point
Clear Charities Inc., will grow increasingly important as
the University develops the USA Cancer Institute,
explained Dr. Robert Kreisberg, USA vice president for
medical affairs and dean of the College of Medicine. Not
only does an endowment help to subsidize the cost of
bringing top research faculty to the Institute, but it also
adds a level of prestige that makes recruiting easier.
“The development of the Cancer Research Institute at
the University of South Alabama is the largest, single
endeavor undertaken in the history of the University,
and its success depends upon recruiting highly qualified
individuals to assume leadership roles,” Kreisberg said.
“The Point Clear Charities Cancer Research Chair
makes it possible to recruit leaders in cancer treatment
and research to this institution.”

USA Trustee, Dr. Steven Stokes and his wife, Angelia, have
made it a practice to give back to their community and to the
University of South Alabama where Dr. Stokes received his
medical degree and Angelia received an undergraduate degree in business. They established the Angelia and Steve Stokes
Scholarship in Fiction and Poetry to show the couple’s appreciation to USA upon the 20th anniversary of their
graduation, and have made a significant contribution to the USA Cancer Research Institute.
Reflecting on the creative writing endowment and the scholarship in fiction and poetry, Dr. Stokes said, “A society
will be remembered by the literature it produces. I hope we can find someone who will be a great writer from our area
and University.”
The BRONZE JAGUAR SOCIETY recognizes current gift commitments or cumulative giving
over the years from $25,000 to $99,999.
CALDWELL SCHOLARSHIP
The James and Ivel Caldwell Scholarship, established in
1994, has helped 14 USA students gain international
training. The endowment, established by the family and
friends of Dr. and Mrs. Caldwell helps students in the
College of Arts & Sciences travel and study abroad.
The late Dr. Caldwell was a well-known educator in
Alabama and several foreign countries. During USA’s
formative years, Dr. Caldwell served as vice president for
development and contracts. He also wrote, “Magic - No!
Miracle - Yes! The Founding and Early Development of the
University of South Alabama.”
Jim Caldwell, a son of the late Dr. Caldwell, said his father
had a vision for USA and Mobile’s international presence
because of its strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico. “This
University should serve its interests by educating people in
international politics and culture,” Mr. Caldwell said.
The most recent recipient of the scholarship, Rachel
Kleinpeter, spent last summer in Germany polishing her
language and cultural skills at the prestigious Goethe
Institute in Frankfurt. “I’d like to
thank the Caldwell family for giving
the money to students in foreign
language at the University,” she
said. “It was really helpful because
the Goethe Institute is one of the
most expensive language schools in
the country.” Kleinpeter plans to make a
career in government, with her interests
focusing on counter intelligence, fraud
and felony criminal investigations.

ANDY AND CAROL DENNY
USA Alumnus Andy Denny and his wife have funded the first USA
National Alumni Association Endowment under a new program approved by
the National Alumni Board. The “Andy and Carol Denny Excellence in
Teaching Award” was established through a gift from the Denny’s which was
matched by his employer and the University.
A former Jag basketball player, Andy said he chose to attend USA because
of the coaches and the opportunity to be a part of an up-and-coming
University. He received his education degree in 1972 followed by a master’s
in 1973.
“It’s people like me, and other graduates, who have a responsibility to
support the University today and tomorrow,” Denny said. This endowment’s
focus on teaching reflects Denny’s appreciation for the faculty at USA.
“These good faculty members don’t get enough credit for what they do,” he
said.
As an example of his dedication to and love of the University, Andy
Denny, an Indiana resident, purchased season tickets to the Jag baseball
games. On a recent business trip while waiting in the airport for his flight,
Denny observed a group of youngsters also waiting for the flight. One of the
young boys was wearing a South Alabama baseball cap. Denny approached
him and asked if he lived in Mobile and if he is a Jaguar baseball fan. The
boy eagerly told him that he loved baseball and was a Jag fan to which
Denny responded, “How would like to go to some Jag baseball games?”
Excited, the young boy said that he would really like that. Denny then told
the boy that he had season tickets and that he would send them to him so
that he could enjoy USA Jaguar baseball. What a great alumnus!

MICHAEL MC GLOTHREN
Local attorney and USA alumnus, Michael McGlothren, established a new
scholarship endowment in honor of his parents. The Charles R. and Olivia Rambo
Endowed Scholarship will benefit philosophy students in the College of Arts and
Sciences. But this was not McGlothren’s first gift to the philosophy department. In
1995, he made an endowment gift to honor the memory of his late brother, Charles.
That same year, he established a philosophy speaker’s endowment fund in honor of
his parents and in 2000, made an additional endowment gift to the speaker’s fund.
The focus of his gifts has been the philosophy department. McGlothren said he
arrived at USA as a freshman math major, but he had an epiphany in his first
philosophy class. “It opened my eyes,” he said. “It was as if for the first time the
world opened up.”
McGlothren gives credit for his gifts to his parents. “This to me is about my parents,”
he said. “They’ve been my source of inspiration in everything I’ve done. The highest
compliment I can be paid is to have people say I’m like my mother and father.”

The University of South Alabama’s endowment was established in July, 1998 with a year end balance
on Sept. 30, 1999 of $2,787,077. At fiscal year end Sept. 30, 2004, the University’s endowment had
grown to a total of $19,358,650. The earnings from these endowments are used to fund scholarships,
academic chairs and professorships, and research projects to Make a Difference in the lives of those
who come to the University of South Alabama.

“WHERE THE NEED IS GREATEST”
What does “Where the Need is Greatest” mean? It
means that the money given through the Faculty/Staff
campaign and the Alumni Direct Mail campaign is
unrestricted. It can be designated by the president for
specific needs in the colleges and for student groups.
For the first time in USA history, colleges and student
groups received grants through the unrestricted annual
fund dollars raised during the 2003-04 Alumni Direct Mail
and Faculty/Staff campaigns. These grants were made
possible by donors who asked that their gift be designated
to “Where the Need is Greatest.” The 12 grants awarded
totaled $18,082.
Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations,
Dr. Joe Busta, Jr., said the inaugural grants were a good
start toward supporting the University in a new way.
These funds enable President Gordon Moulton to fund
opportunities or solve problems across the University
system. Busta sent requests for proposals to colleges and
groups across campus. The grants were used for small
projects of $1,000 to $2,000 to fund student and college
facility and equipment needs, research projects and other
improvements.
How were these grants used? The College of Engineering
completed the renovation of its student study area/lounge;
the Student Government Association purchased picnic
tables for the USA Student Recreation Center Complex;
the College of Education purchased an electronic message
board and the Mitchell College of Business used its grant
to help fund a plasma screen information system; the
Library purchased and installed window blinds for a
student group study room; the Colleges of Arts & Sciences
and Medicine funded student research projects; the
Colleges of Nursing, Allied Health, and the School of
Computer and Information Sciences used their grant to
purchase equipment and multi-media packages for student
instruction; the USA Medical Center purchased computer
software for employee education; and the USA Baldwin
County Campus installed a barbeque grill for its student
activity area.
So, it is easy to see that these gifts, though not
designated for a particular purpose, make possible the
completion of projects, the purchase of equipment and
instructional materials, and other worthwhile endeavors
that might otherwise have taken a much longer time
become a reality.
Students, faculty, and staff alike benefit from those
unrestricted gifts designated to “Where the Need is
Greatest!”

As a student in the masters program at USA, Joanne
McKnight worked in the Development office at
Children’s and Women’s Hospital. This provided an
introduction for her to the CMN Telethon. She has
since become a member of the Telethon Executive
Committee, an Ambassador to the hospital through
the Auxiliary, and volunteers for many events
sponsored by the hospital. When asked about her
involvement with CWH, Joanne said, “It is a
pleasure and a privilege for me to give of both my
time and my money to the USA Children’s and
Women’s Hospital. I know that my contributions
will result in the provision of the best care, with the
most up-to-date equipment and the latest
technology, for the children of our area. I have a
responsibility to support this unique local institution,
but, by giving, I also feel a sense of ownership in the
hospital and take conmfort in the knowledge that,
should my grandchildren need specialized or critical
care, we have that service available to them right here
in Mobile.”

Mr. Robert Patterson loves the University of South Alabama and the
USA Jaguars - whether baseball or basketball, you can always find
Robert at the games. He was one of the University’s first baseball
managers and has been a long time supporter of both basketball and
baseball. Robert wanted to leave a lasting gift to USA Jaguar baseball
and through a life insurance policy, he will create the Robert Patterson
Endowment for Baseball. When received by the University, Robert’s
Legacy gift will provide support for the USA baseball team forever.

VOLUNTEER LEADERS
The University of South Alabama is supported by many individuals, groups and organizations but none are more
important to the University than the USA National Alumni Association, the USA Medical Alumni Association, and
the Jaguar Athletic Club. It is through the fund raising efforts of these great volunteer organizations that scholarships
are created, student, faculty, and employee awards are presented, academic programs are supported, athletic programs
are enhanced and school spirit is exemplified.

T

Alabama National Alumni
Association’s mission is to
work closely with the
University and the other
constituent groups within
the “University family”. We
aim to foster and maintain
an active relationship
between these groups and to
develop an image that
ensures the integrity and principles of the University
through active participation.
Association membership is critical in order for us to
accomplish our mission. Membership participation is
increasing daily. The Lifetime Membership club level has
grown most significantly in the past year.
The Association had a banner year, adding new
members and increasing the number of alumni chapters to
11 with the addition of Washington D.C. The Association
has created two new scholarships, helping to attract topquality students to the University. It has honored faculty
members and exceptional employees, as well as launching
the first two named alumni award endowments: The Andy
and Carol Denny Excellence in Teaching Award and the
Olivia Rambo McGlothren Outstanding Faculty Scholar
Award.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowl4edge
our alumni who have endowed scholarships and those
who have supported the Association through membership.
I also want to acknowledge the commitment and guidance
of the 21-member Association Board of Directors which
serves as the voice of over 47,000 USA graduates. Together
we can all “Make a Difference” for our alma mater.

Message from the
Jaguar Athletic Club
At the University of South Alabama, there are seven men’s
athletic teams and eight women’s teams all of which compete at
the NCAA Division I level. All are supported by the Jaguar
Athletic Club and its members from the highly visible men’s and
women’s basketball teams to the men’s baseball team to the
championship tennis teams and the track and field teams.
It is the mission of the Jaguar Athletic club to provide financial
assistance for funding student-athlete scholarships, supplement the
ever increasing costs of team travel, recruiting and equipment
purchases. In these and many other ways the JAC assists the
Department of Athletics in meeting the financial challenges of
competing at the NCAA Division I level.
The University of South Alabama has two of the finest sports
facilities in the SunBelt Conference and in the state of Alabama –
the Mitchell Center, home of the basketball Jags, and Stanky Field,
home of the baseball Jags. The newly renovated and upgraded
Stanky Field brings great pride to the baseball Jags and the
University as a whole. With these great facilities, USA can now be
host to regional NCAA tournaments as well as state and local high
school and middle school tournaments.

A charitable gift to the University of South Alabama
can take many forms. It can be:
I a gift of cash or securities
The most immediately useable gifts to the University
are those which come in the form of cash and in the
form of securities which can be converted to cash. All
gifts of cash or securities can be designated for any
purpose the donor chooses.
I a corporate matching gift
Many companies encourage their employees to be
good citizens and aid their philanthropic effort by
matching, and often doubling, or even tripling each
employee dollar given. If one works for a matching gift
company, just send the employer’s matching gift form
with your check. The University Development Office
and your company will take care of the details. USA will
recognize both the company for their matching gift and

Various trust arrangements such as charitable
remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts,
and charitable lead trusts may enable a donor to make a
gift to the University and at the same time retain income
from the assets and secure a tax advantage.

I gifts of real and personal property
These gifts can be anything from land, houses, and
other real estate to works of art, collectibles, rare books,
copyrights, oil and gas interests, as well as scientific
equipment, computers, vehicles and heavy equipment.
The property may be sold and invested in endowments
or used for capital or operating funds. Gifts of scientific
equipment or computers may go immediately into the
classroom or research laboratory.
