The University of South Alabama today is
experiencing unprecedented levels of success
in its important missions of teaching,
research, service and health care. Our positive
impact on the people we serve has never been
greater. USA’s leadership in service to
humanity has been bolstered by private support, which has enhanced the
University in ways unattainable by traditional revenue sources alone.
Through this third USA Honor Roll of Donors, the University thanks all
of you whose support is helping the University every day to achieve its
goals. This year’s report takes on an even greater significance, as it
underscores efforts toward “Campaign USA,” the University’s first-ever
comprehensive campaign.
Campaign USA was announced this year with the simple motto of
“Leadership.” The $75 million effort will secure resources to help the
University lead to a bright future by expanding and improving facilities,
supporting top faculty and students, enhancing all of our academic and
athletic programs, and providing the research, outreach and health care
services that will improve the quality of life for all citizens.
All gifts in this publication, as well as those in the two previous editions,
are incorporated into this important initiative. With your help, Campaign
USA is positioning the University for continued leadership in making a
difference in South Alabama and beyond.

On behalf of the USA Board of
Trustees, thank you for making a
difference. Your support and interest,
expressed through your generous gifts
in recent years, have been important
in many ways. One significant result of your continued giving is the
clear message that the time for launching the University's first
comprehensive campaign has come. On March 9, 2006, the Board
of Trustees of the University of South Alabama accepted the charge
and unanimously adopted Campaign USA.
This unprecedented fund-raising initiative will accelerate growth
and elevate quality across the University, the Gulf Coast region, and
the nation. Please accept my personal thanks, along with those of
every member of the Board of Trustees, for your gift and continued

During fiscal year 2005, individuals made up the largest
segment of donors to the university; their gifts totaled
$10,530,956, constituting 83 percent of private gift dollars.
This level of giving from individuals represents a substantial
increase from fiscal year 2004, when gifts from individuals
reached $8,555,810 and constituted 74 percent of all giving.

reaching an all-time high of 5,543 during
fiscal year 2005. Since 2002, the number
of gifts made annually has increased by
155.5 percent.

RECOGNIZING YOUR GENEROSITY
T
he University of South Alabama strives to recognize and honor the important role donors of charitable
gifts play in advancing the teaching, research and service missions of the University.
The Honor Roll of Donors recognizes all donors who have made gifts during the fiscal year covered by this
volume (FY 2005). Donors whose cumulative giving exceeds $24,999 will be recognized by permanent
membership in the Jaguar Society and donors who have made deferred gifts are recognized by permanent
membership in the Legacy Society, whose entire memberships are listed annually in the Honor Roll of
Donors.
Donors whose gifts are matched by an employer or other organization will be recognized for the full amount
of their gift and the matching gift received through their efforts. The company or organization providing the
matching gift will also be recognized.
Our publication recognizes donors within the following categories:
The Jaguar Society provides permanent recognition for donors to the University of South Alabama whose

Regions Bank Invests in USA Students
Forty eight students have benefited from Regions Bank scholarships since
the program was initiated in 2000. Deserving students from Arts and
Sciences as well as the Mitchell College of Business are selected for eight
$1,000 awards each year. This year Regions Bank reaffirmed their
commitment to provide 32 additional scholarship awards over the next four
years.
The Regions Bank Theresa Duke Scholarship Program was named in
honor of the late Theresa Duke who worked at the bank for over 25 years
and served as a Vice President and student loan officer. “We are happy to
continue our commitment to support USA by providing these student
scholarships. It is in the community’s best interest to nurture excellent
students who will become future employees and residents,” said Terry
Harbin, Bank President.
The schools supported by this scholarship are as grateful as the student
recipients. Dr. David Johnson, Dean of Arts and Sciences said, “This gift
strengthens our college, allowing us to attract and retain students with
outstanding talents and a strong work ethic. We are particularly proud that
a great financial institution like Regions Bank recognizes the value of the
education provided in the arts and sciences. We appreciate their support.”

Promoting Better Care for the Youngest Patients
Young patients at USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital can thank Log A
Load For Kids for medical equipment that is improving care and saving lives.
Their gifts have made possible the purchase of “Rosie Timbers,” a robot that
delivers lab work throughout the hospital; the “Care For Kids” and “Care For
Babies” transport vehicles for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and the Hollis J.
Wiseman Neonatal Intensive Care Unit used for bringing critically ill and
injured children from other hospitals to USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital;
and the renovation of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Made up of the Delta and Longleaf districts for the southern part of
Alabama, Log a Load for Kids is a program of the Alabama Forestry Association
and the Loggers Council which raises funds for the USA Children’s and
Women’s Hospital. Delta district chairman Gray Skipper spoke of his group’s
commitment saying, “The entire forestry community in southwest Alabama and
beyond has unselfishly given to Log a Load for Kids for over a decade. The
donations have enabled numerous children to live and have healthy and
productive lives.” Longleaf district chairman Richard Quina agrees that “Log a
Load for Kids helps assure the health and well-being of our children, and
demonstrates the commitment of Alabama’s loggers and their forest products
industry partners to support this community.”

Scholarship Award
Alumnus John “Jack” Donovan MBA ‘85 and his
wife Lorri donated $100,000 to endow a scholarship
in honor of his former professor Dr. Paul Pietri, a
member of the faculty of Department of
Management. This scholarship will create an annual
Leadership Award for outstanding students in the
management field. Jack Donovan, senior vice
president of ARAMARK Corp. and USA graduate,
demonstrated his abiding commitment to USA
throughout 2005 by donating his time as a visiting
executive lecturer in the spring and addressing the graduating class at the Fall Commencement. Donovan has credited
his successful career to his experience at the University.

Astute Alumni Couple Sees Need and Gives
Jay ‘75 and Rose ‘74 Miller are the type of alumni every institution wishes it could duplicate. They attend athletic
events, college-sponsored events, and maintain a close relationship with their college dean. By maintaining such a close
relationship with their alma mater, Rose and Jay are quick to recognize areas that need some special attention and they
then make it their personal mission to find the resources to meet that need.
Reece Jackson Miller, Jr., aka Jay, is a graduate of the College of Engineering, and his bride Rose Pocase Miller is a
graduate of the Mitchell College of Business. Both of their sons earned degrees from the College of Engineering. While
their younger son was in school, Jay and Rose realized the increasing financial burden many college students face and
created a scholarship to help engineering students, which they continue to build today.
Several years later, the Millers wanted to recognize hard working staff members and created the Jay and Rose Miller
Endowed Staff Recognition Award in the College of Engineering. Next the couple wanted to increase attendance at
women’s basketball games and made a gift to purchase promotional items. Then the following year, Jay and Rose made a
special gift for the women’s basketball coaches to recognize their tireless efforts.
When asked why they give so generously, Jay and Rose said, “The scholarship has been a way to give back to the
university and to make a difference in a student’s life. We are able to meet the recipients of our scholarship and they tell
us what a difference it makes for them. All have been able to graduate and have gone on to jobs in their field of study. It
is a wonderful feeling to know you are able to make dreams come true.”

Piano was created to provide tuition
assistance to an outstanding music student
at the University. “I've always loved the
piano,” said Mrs. Sue Hanlein. “My mother
was musical and one day, as I was thinking
about her, I decided that I would like to do
something for somebody else in her honor.”
Thus the scholarship was created. “I derive
great pleasure in being able to do something
for somebody else,” said the philanthropist
who regularly attends concerts featuring
outstanding music students held in the
Laidlaw Performing Arts Center.

Appreciative Alumni Family Gives to Encourage Others
Just three years ago, Ron Stallworth ‘03 finally beat the odds by graduating from the University with a degree
in chemical engineering. Earning his degree took 14 years of working while going to school and even a period
of homelessness, but Ron isn’t taking it easy — his family is already extending a hand to others.
Despite the obstacles Ron faced, he had the help of friends, mentors, and most importantly his own great
determination. His teachers saw it early. “I’m expecting great things of Ron in the future because he has both
technical skills and great human skills,” said his late mentor Dr. Ted Huddleston, whose recent death was a
great loss to the College of Engineering. Another USA professor, Dr. Keith Harrison, remembers Ron’s desire
to help and encourage his peers with a unique incentive, small cash
prizes he called “congeniality awards.”
Almost a year to the day from his graduation, Ron and his wife Gail
‘90 established an endowment to continue that desire to encourage
others through financial assistance. The Stallworth Scholarship in
Chemical Engineering will provide substantial financial assistance to a
deserving student. The Stallworths continue to build the endowment
each year because as Ron acknowledges, “Every donation, no matter
how large or small, contributes to bettering the education of a future
leader and improving the likelihood of creating another donor with
the mindset that giving back to the community is genuinely as
rewarding for the donor as it is for the recipient.” He continued,
“God has truly blessed us with the mindset and ability to fund the
Stallworth Chemical Engineering Scholarship and making an annual
donation that recognizes a commendable student, department, and
university is the very least we can do to show our appreciation for the
help we received.”

Students Make Hurricane Video a
Windfall for Meteorology Program
During 2005, students in the USA American Meteorology Society
generated revenue by selling storm videos of local hurricanes. This
enabled them to present a $15,000 gift to the University to establish the
“Dr. Bill Williams Meteorological Endowed Scholarship Fund.”
Dr. Williams is the Director of the Coastal Weather Research Center,
the Meteorology Program Coordinator, and Associate Professor of
Geography. Because this gift was from a student organization, the
University matched the gift, creating a $30,000 endowed scholarship to
benefit future students. In addition to the scholarship endowment, the
student storm videos, which have been sold nationwide, have brought
great recognition to USA’s Department of Meterology.

The University of South Alabama’s endowment was established in July, 1998 with a year end balance on
Sept. 30, 1999 of $2,787,077. At fiscal year end Sept. 30, 2005, the University’s endowment had grown to a
total of $21,704,879. The earnings from these endowments are used to fund scholarships, academic chairs
and professorships, and research projects to Make a Difference in the lives of those who come to the
University of South Alabama.

Kicking Off Campaign USA: Leadership
I
In just four decades, the
University of South Alabama
has become a vital
educational and economic
leader for the upper Gulf
Coast region, enhancing its
community through
teaching, research,
services, and healthcare.
Motivated by the wisdom,
dedication, and enthusiasm of its
community of students, faculty, staff,
alumni, and friends, USA seeks an
even greater role in leading the region
towards a bright future. To enhance
its leadership position and ability to
serve our community the university
has established a goal of $75 million
in private support which it will seek
to raise over the next three years. This
effort, “Campaign USA”, has a single
word slogan- “Leadership”. The word
captures the essence of what USA has
provided in the past and the role it
intends to play in the future as it
moves to an even higher level of
excellence.
Several hundred students, faculty,
city officials, alumni, friends, and the
Campaign Leadership Team turned
out in support as the university
launched this inaugural
comprehensive fundraising campaign
on March 9, 2006. The day’s
highlight was President Moulton’s
announcement of a $22 million gift
from Abraham, Mayer, and Arlene
Mitchell to support a top campaign
priority, the new cancer research
center, which will now be named the
Mitchell Cancer Institute. At the
University of South Alabama
beginning of this public phase,
Campaign USA had raised $36.6
million to support key initiatives
across the university.
The Campaign Leadership Team is
made up of local, state, and national
community and civic leaders who
have agreed to work with the
university to achieve its campaign
goals, from providing more and
greater student scholarships, to
enhancing resources to hire, retain,
and support top faculty, to improving
the physical environment and
equipment in support of the
institution’s vital research and health
care missions. With their leadership
and your help we will ensure that
USA continues Making A Difference

Gifted Medical Scholars Supported by New Endowment
The retirement of a gifted medical educator who served the College of Medicine for
many years, most recently as Dean, has motivated creation of an endowment to honor his
career in perpetuity through the Dr. Robert A. Kreisberg Gifted Medical Scholars
Endowment. During his tenure, Dr Kreisberg educated, trained and inspired several
thousand USA medical students and residents who have gone on to distinguished careers of
their own.
The endowment will support faculty members selected as Kreisberg Scholars on the basis
of excellence in teaching and
mentoring of students and
residents, commitment to care and
teaching of patients, and modeling
the ethics and intellectual curiosity
needed to sustain a lifetime of
professional growth in medicine.

Trauma Center Lectureship in
Memory of William A. L. Mitchell
The William A. L. Mitchell Endowment for the USA
Trauma Center was established in memory of a local man,
William A. L. Mitchell, who died at age 18 after a valiant
struggle against injuries sustained in an automobile
accident. Because of the heroic efforts of physicians, nurses
and staff at the USA Trauma Center on William’s behalf,
his parents designated funds contributed in his memory to
establish an endowed lectureship in William’s name to
support an annual presentation by a renowned trauma
expert for Trauma Center staff, residents, and medical
students. The USA Trauma Center and College of Medicine
are deeply grateful to the donors of this important new
resource for improving trauma education.

Alumni Take Action
Alumni play an important part in growing the university and ensuring the highest quality
learning opportunities for future students. Getting involved in the university through
fundraising is just one venue where alumni give back to their alma mater.
When the Learning Resource Center at the Mitchell College of Business needed construction
funds, former students responded to the call. Alumni committee members Alan Alexander ‘78,
Bruce McCrory ‘72, Don McCrory, and Jody Dunn ‘72 gave time and expertise to the effort by
helping to identify donors, schedule and attend solicitation meetings, and complete proposals.
Together with committee advisor Abe Mitchell, the group reached its goal for the Learning
Resource Center project.
R. Alan Alexander, chair of this alumni development initiative, spoke with justifiable pride
of the groups’ accomplishment, “It was an honor to chair the fundraising effort for the
addition to the USA Mitchell College of Business. For the first time in the history of the
university, an alumni group undertook efforts to raise “bricks and mortar” funds. Our
committee was fortunate to find a high level of interest in this project throughout the community, but especially among alumni of
the college. Many of the major contributors expressed their satisfaction in being able to get involved once again and pledged not only
their monetary support, but their personal commitments as well.” He continued, “I hope all alumni of the USA Mitchell College of
Business will join me in becoming more involved in the activities of the college and its commitment to quality.”

New Building Aids in
Exploring Our Past
Lost, a popular series about stranded survivors of a plane
wreck, William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, and the
Tom Hanks’ film, Castaway, are artifacts of a human
fascination with determination and survival instinct in
extreme circumstances. We are enthralled by our species’
ability to maximize the slimmest of resources-perhaps, the
same resources on which our earliest ancestors survived.
Soon, campus visitors will have the opportunity to view,
first hand, the ingenuity of our area’s earliest settlers in the Alfred and Lucile Delchamps Archaeology Building. Its exhibits,
uncovered by local archaeological groups, students, professors, and volunteers demonstrate that our ancestors were highly
creative survivors. Gulf Coast artifacts housed here include stones carved into arrowheads, animal bones used as utensils,
dishes formed from molded mud, as well as weapons and shelters made from tree limbs and other natural materials.
The Delchamps Archaeology Building serves the instructional, research, and artifact storage needs of the Department of
Archaeology and will provide exhibition space for important archaeology collections pertaining to the history of Mobile
and the northern Gulf Coast. The Delchamps Archaeology Building will enliven the educational experiences of the area’s
students, perhaps especially fourth graders whose curriculum includes Alabama history.
The building is named in honor of the Delchamps family who donated their personal home and property to benefit the
University. The naming of the archaeology building coincides with the family’s interest in preserving the area’s heritage
and history. Many in our community have generously supported construction of this vibrant cultural resource, including:
The Crampton Trust, the J. L. Bedsole Foundation, the Hearin-Chandler Foundation and others. Collections and
exhibits for the facility have been provided by: White-Smith Land Company Inc., Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Bedsole, Mr. and

Honoring the Humanitarians in a Conflict Ridden World:
The Semoon and Youngshin Chang Award for Humanitarian Services
Sometimes the kindest deeds go unnoticed. Dr. and Mrs. Semoon Chang have chosen to create a scholarship that will
recognize those whose acts of humanitarianism help to make our world a better place for all. “We truly believe that the
ultimate objective of life is neither money nor power but to make the world a better place to live for all human beings.
We have seen so many times in history, including these days, that decisions made with no foundation in humanism can
lead to tragic consequences. In our case, we have benefited so much from the University of South Alabama that we feel
strongly we need to give something back. It is our wish, through the endowment, to recognize one or two persons each
year associated with the University who make the greatest contribution toward improving humanity,” said Dr. Chang, a
professor of economics and finance.

Entrepreneurial Alumnus Challenges Fellow Grads
During college Keith Ammons ‘95 was president of
Jaguar Productions, the campus student programming
organization. That opportunity, paired with the things he
learned in the classroom and the student activities
department, led him to where he is now; both a manager
and a business owner.
Before Ammons even completed his graduation
paperwork, he had two job offers, both from contacts
made while working with Jaguar Productions. While
working in this organization, he had a programming
budget of about a hundred thousand dollars. Today, he and
his wife, Rebecca ‘97, whom he met at USA, regularly
manage budgets that exceed a million dollars for their
company, Special Event Staffing Agency (SESA). “Times
sure have changed, but the lessons I learned within the
student activities department have remained the same,”
said Ammons.
The entrepreneur donated $20,000 to the university and
his gift has been matched by the university to create an
endowment fund of $40,000. This will now provide for a
$2,000 scholarship each spring semester for a deserving
student.
Ammons has extended a challenge to fellow alumni to
“think back over their student life and determine if there
was ever a teacher or administrator who helped direct them
toward a successful career. If anyone can name just one at
the University, I challenge them to give a little something
back,” Ammons stated.
“I have been very fortunate to have the means to give
enough to help one student, but there are thousands of
graduates, and if each of us gives just a small amount, the
program could collectively help many more deserving
students,” Ammons added.

foster and maintain an active

University through active participation.
Association membership is critical in order for us to
accomplish our mission. I am pleased to report that 2005
was a very productive year for the Association. Membership
participation is increasing and the Lifetime Membership club
level has grown most significantly in the past year.
The Association sponsored nine academic scholarships,
presented three faculty/staff awards, and six outstanding
employee awards. The Steve and Carol Kittrell Southerner
Endowment Scholarship was announced. The Association
Board of Directors designated funds to award five Katrina
Relief Fund scholarships to deserving students affected by the
devastating hurricane.
The Association also hosted the first Distinguished Alumni
and Service Awards program at which seven inductees were
honored for their outstanding accomplishments and service
to the University.
I would like to acknowledge our alumni who have
endowed scholarships and those who have supported the
Association through membership. I also want to acknowledge

hosts the White Coat Ceremony for sophomore medical
students. This event highlights their transition from basic
sciences to clinical education and the beginning of their
professional life as physicians-in-training. These young men
and women comprise the next generation of alumni

Jaguar Athletic Club
President’s Message
The Jaguar Athletic Club is
committed to supporting high
quality athletic programs at
the University of South
Alabama. Seven men’s and
eight women’s athletic teams
represent USA in NCAA
Division I competition. These
important programs enhance
campus life for all students
and serve as a source of pride for the USA community.
The mission of the Jaguar Athletic Club (JAC) is to
provide financial assistance to these important programs
through scholarships for student-athletes, supplemental
funding to support team travel, promote recruitment of
exceptional athletes, and purchase equipment. In these
and many other ways the JAC assists the Department of
Athletics in meeting the financial challenges of
competing at the NCAA Division I level.
USA is home to two of the finest sports facilities in
Alabama and in the SunBelt Conference, the Mitchell
Center and Stanky Field. These exceptional facilities and
others planned for the near future position USA to serve
as a host for NCAA regional tournaments, as well as
athletic tournaments for secondary schools around the
state.

GIVING
Private support is critical to future success of the University of South Alabama (USA). There are many ways to make
philanthropic gifts to USA. Gifts can be restricted gifts to any department, college, or program, or you can choose to
make unrestricted gifts to the University to be used “Where the Need is Greatest” at the President’s discretion.
A charitable gift to the University of South Alabama can take many forms:
Cash or securities - make the most immediately useable gifts to the USA. All gifts of cash or securities can be
designated for any purpose you choose.
Corporate matching gifts - many companies encourage their employees’ philanthropy by matching, doubling,
or tripling the employee's gift. If you work for a matching gift company, just send your employer’s matching
gift form with your gift, and USA will take care of the details. Both you and your company will be recognized
for the matching gift.
Bequest through a will or living trust - many donors find a bequest the most convenient way to leave a
legacy to USA.
Charitable trust or other life income plan - various trust arrangements such as charitable remainder
unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts, and charitable lead trusts may enable you simultaneously to
make a gift to the University, retain income from the assets, and secure a tax advantage.
Gifts of real and personal property - your gift of real estate, works of art, collectibles, rare books, copyrights,
oil and gas interests may be sold and the proceeds endowed or used for capital or operating funds. Gifts of
useable scientific equipment or computers may go immediately into the classroom or research laboratory.
Gift with funds that are returned to you or passed to your loved ones - you can make a gift of cash or other
assets through an arrangement that will provide USA with annual gifts over a specified period and then pass
the gift principal to your heirs or have it returned to you. These creative gift plans offer valuable income, as
well as gift and estate tax savings, depending upon which type you choose.
IRA’s and qualified retirement plans - because these assets may be subject to heavy taxation when passed to
your heirs, they are wonderful assets to consider using for charitable giving. Your gift can be made simply by
designating USA as a beneficiary of your retirement plan. If, however, you meet the minimum age for
withdrawals and would benefit from a deduction to use against your current taxes, you might also consider a
lifetime distribution to USA. Due to the dynamic nature of the law, you should consult your tax advisor prior
to making such a gift.
Life insurance - a life insurance policy that is no longer needed can be donated during your lifetime to
support your favorite university program. Such a gift offers you income and estate tax savings. USA can also be
named as a beneficiary of a new or existing policy.
