The Departments of Horticulture and Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Georgia are pleased to announce the release of two cost estimating and job bidding software programs for the professional landscape industry. Developed on Microsoft Excel for classroom teaching, the software is now available to professional landscapers. Both programs contain worksheets for estimating overhead, labor, and equipment costs, as well as line-item contract proposals for presenting to clients. Also included are extensive instructions and practice tutorials. Most data can be easily modified to fit local prices and time/task data.
Hort Scape streamlines the bidding process for landscape installation. Once the user builds coded databases for plants and materials, the program helps calculate costs for landscape installation, including plant costs, bed amendments, grading, mulching, edging, pre-kill with herbicides, turfgrass installation, plant removal, watering, clean-up, as well as travel and labor. This data becomes part of a comprehensive bid summary showing costs for materials, labor, and equipment. The bid summary also shows total direct costs, break-even price, profit, overhead recovery, and the final bid price. Costs are then translated into a contract proposal for presenting to the client. A sample contract is also included.
Hort Management is an allied program for estimating landscape management costs. Like Hort Scape, this program assists the user in estimating material, labor, and equipment costs on a particular job and includes a break-even price and bid price. Industry averages for time/ task data and costs are used throughout the application.
The user is encouraged to adjust this data according to local costs and the firm’s time/task data. The data is then translated into a line-item bid summary and contact proposal for presenting to the client.
Hort Scape and Hort Management take the guesswork out of bidding and help you feel more comfortable in competitive bid situations. You will be confident that you accounted for all your costs while realizing a profit!
