BookDiscussion
On Sunday, January 10, there will be a discussion of the book
How’s Your Faith? An Unlikely Spiritual Journey by David Gregory.
In this book, former newsman and Meet the Press moderator
David Gregory probes various religious traditions to better understand his own faith and answer life’s most important questions: who do we want to be and what do we believe? The author
approaches his faith with the curiosity and dedication expected
of a journalist accustomed to holding politicians and presidents
accountable, but he also comes as a seeker who discovers why
spiritual journeys are always worthwhile. Please join the discussion of this book on January 10 at 11:15 in the Parish Office.
SpiritualExercises
The "Living the Spiritual Exercises" group meets this Sunday,
January 10 at 3:30 pm in the Lannon Chapel. All who have participated in the Spiritual Exercises or 19th Annotation Retreat
are welcome.

Priest, theologian, professor, author, and noted speaker, Rev. J.
Bryan Hehir will present a talk on “Pope Francis and the

LostandFound
The lost and found box fills quickly at this time of year. At the
present time there are some eyeglasses, a few wool caps, a black
scarf, a white scarf, men’s leather gloves, a bag full of baby
books, a box of red nail polish and some children’s sweatshirts!
If you think these items might belong to you, please call 617-5526102 or stop by the Parish Office. We will be happy to reunite
these items with their owner.
SingintheNewYear
Why did I ever stop singing? It was so much fun, there was such
a great spirit, I loved making beautiful music with others, I needed to express my faith through song, it was how I prayed, I had a
great sense of accomplishment and fulfillment, it helped my
breathing and general sense of well being, singing brought me
closer to God.
Sound familiar? Maybe it’s time to re-engage and join one of our
liturgical singing groups. The 10am choir begins rehearsing
again on Wed., Jan 13th at 7:15. The Latino Coro begins on
Thursday, Jan. 14th at 7:15 and the 5:30 ensemble continues on
Sunday afternoons at 4:30. All of these groups are welcoming in
new members, so contact Michael Burgo if you are interested in
reigniting your singing voice and meeting new friends.
If interested, please contact Michael Burgo at Burgo@bc.edu,

church bulletin boards.

Parishioners of St. Ignatius
Chestnut Hill, MA
Dear Friends,
In this New Year as we celebrate new beginnings, I write with
news of a new beginning for your parish: Cardinal Sean O’Malley
has accepted my nomination of Fr. Joe Costantino, S.J., as your
next pastor. Fr. Costantino recently served as the president of
our high school in Buffalo. Previously he ministered as pastor of
St. Francis Xavier Parish in Manhattan. There he earned many
accolades for shepherding the Parish through an award-winning
restoration of the church. Fr. Costantino’s collaborative style of
leadership enabled a parish-wide discernment that involved the
parishioners in the restoration process as well as in a revision
and renewal of its mission statement. This brought the parishioners together in celebration of their rich diversity. I believe Fr.
Costantino is the right Jesuit to guide St. Ignatius in the years
ahead.
Fr. Bob VerEecke, S.J., has truly served you wonderfully over the
past 27 years. Many have spoken of their admiration for him, of
his outstanding ability to pastor, and of the creativity he has
brought to St. Ignatius. I know you will miss his presence very
much. Many would certainly like to see him remain indefinitely.
Yet the Jesuit charism of mobility calls us to bring our gifts to
new communities. The true home of a Jesuit is the road. I believe
Fr. VerEecke’s many talents are needed elsewhere at this time. I
hope you will choose the path of generosity in supporting him as
he serves another congregation.
In the months ahead I am sure you will laud Fr. VerEecke for all
he has given to St. Ignatius. He and you deserve a time of celebration for his past leadership. Then, I hope you will turn to the
future and welcome Fr. Costantino, who will begin to serve the
parish on June 1st. I know he will be visiting the Parish before
then to get to know you better. I hope you will begin with him a
process of discernment and planning so that together you can
chart a course for St. Ignatius that best serves God’s ever fresh
and loving invitation to you.
Please be assured of my prayers and I ask your prayers for me
and for the Society of Jesus.
Rev.JosephS.Costantino,S.J. was born and raised in
Brooklyn and graduated from
NYU in 1977. Upon
graduation, he entered the
Society of Jesus and was
ordained in 1987. He holds a
Master of Arts in Philosophy
degree from Fordham
University, and both a Master
of Divinity degree and
Licentiate in Systematic
Theology from the Weston
Jesuit School of Theology,
Cambridge, MA. From 1981
to 1984, he was a full-time
instructor in philosophy at Canisius College, Buffalo. After
ordination in 1987, Fr. Costantino spent a year at the University
of Pennsylvania in graduate studies, followed by the next three
years as a full-time retreat & spiritual director at St. Ignatius
Retreat House (Inisfada), Manhasset, NY. After 7 years as
Vocation Director for the Jesuits, he returned to St. Ignatius
Retreat House to become the Executive Director from 1999 to
2006, where he reinvigorated its programming and refurbished
its physical plant. In 2006, Fr. Costantino was appointed Pastor
of the historic Church of St. Francis Xavier, NYC. During the
next seven years, he oversaw a Capital Campaign, a $13.5M
award-winning restoration/renovation of this magnificent
Church, an updating of its mission statement, and the formation
of the parish’s extensive outreach mission to the poor into an
independent 501(c)3 corporation. From 2013 to 2015, he was
both rector of the Jesuit Community and President of Canisius
High School in Buffalo, N.Y. Fr. Costantino has served on a
number of boards and committees for the internal governance of
the Society of Jesus. Most recently, he has been elected a
delegate to the 36th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus
to be held in October 2016. He has served on the first advisory
board of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps which provides service
opportunities for retirees to work among those in need, and has
served on the Boards of Trustees for both Canisius College,
Buffalo, and Loyola High School, NYC. Currently, he is a
member of the Board of Trustees of St. Peter’s University, Jersey
City, N.J., where he is also spending a few months on sabbatical
before becoming Pastor of St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish in
Chestnut Hill, MA, beginning June 1, 2016.

Fr.BobLegacyCampaign
Several weeks ago, members of the Finance Council and Fr. Bob
informed parishioners of the Legacy Campaign that has been
established to honor his 27 years as pastor and address the needs
and areas of greatest importance to him here at St. Ignatius: ! repair of the buttress on the Commonwealth Avenue side of
the church
! a fund that continues to support the arts in worship at St.
Ignatius
! a fund that supports the parish retreats at Eastern Point
! a fund that provides ongoing support for St. Anne’s Parish
in Kingston, Jamaica
Fr. Bob has touched the lives of thousands of people in his nearly
three decades here. We are grateful for his insightful, spiritual
leadership, and stewardship of our beloved parish and hope that
you will join this effort and consider a gift in honor of Fr. Bob.
To date, more than $300,000 has been pledged toward our
$1,000,000 goal for the Legacy Fund. Fr. Bob has been so
touched by the outpouring of love and support shown to him.
Any amount is welcome, but we have established the Ignatius
($25,000), Xavier ($10,000) and Arrupe ($5,000) levels. Checks
should be made to St. Ignatius Church with Fr. Bob Legacy Campaign noted in the memo field. We want to get the word out as
much as possible to reach the goal.
More details will be forthcoming, but mark April 30, 2016 on
your calendar for the parish wide celebration to say our goodbyes.

ChristmasSeason,Scripture
After all the people had been baptized
and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying,
heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him
in bodily form like a dove.
And a voice came from heaven,
“You are my beloved Son;
with you I am well pleased.”
Reflection
The feast of the Baptism of the Lord is the final day of the
Christmas Season. For many this is surprising since we associate
the celebration of Christmas with the birth of the infant Jesus.
But the primary reason we celebrate Christmas is to have our
eyes opened to the real presence of Christ in our world through
the mystery of the Incarnation. The Baptism is one of the most
beautiful Trinitarian moments in the Gospels revealing the exquisite love of God for Jesus and for all of us as beloved sons and
daughters.
TheLifeofIgnatius
At Manresa, St. Ignatius had experiences of prayer so powerful
that he was overwhelmed by the real presence of Jesus with him.
We can only imagine the intensity of this prayer! For Ignatius
Jesus was friend and intimate companion. He would write in the
Second Week of the Exercises “ Ask for the grace to know him
more intimately, to love him more intensely, to follow him more
closely”. He wanted everyone who made the Exercises to have a
similar relationship with Jesus.

LaNavidad4,Escritura
me complazco”.
