Minutes of LLIT meeting April 13, 2010 Present: Marek Sroka, Dara Goldman, Jo Kibbee, Harriett Green, Tony Hynes, Bruce Swann, Bob Cagle, Paula Carns, Connie Santarelli (guest from English Library) We began with a recap of a meeting held the previous week with representatives from LLIT and Mary Stuart (HPNL Librarian) to discuss the concept of a combined Humanities Library, and agreed unanimously that the model for a combined non-circ collection in the HPNL library would seriously compromise the objectives and plans that the LL planning team crafted, and further discussion on another model at this point would undermine further progress of the LLIT. Investigation of better cooperation among humanities units on the 2nd floor can be addressed in the context of the new unit. Most of the discussion centered around defining the parameters of the circulating collection in the LLL. Base on the preliminary review of the materials, English and Modern Languages estimate that up to 40% of the existing combined circulating collection would need to be transferred to the new Literatures and Languages Library. We established that different collections would have different needs (e.g., SIP doesn’t need a circulating collection, but English and Cinema studies do). Subject specialists will determine what would be in the circ collection based on criteria they establish in consultation with faculty. Potential criteria include: new books, faculty research needs, curricula, ‘classics’. We need to keep in mind however that we’ll have fewer staff to process an on-site collection that needs significant management (e.g., transferring new books out after a certain date). More discussion and conferring with academic departments will be needed as we work through defining what the circ collection will look like. It would also help to bring UGL in on the discussion so that we have an idea of what they’re currently ordering for their circulating collection. (A side discussion focused on the need for an articulated policy on purchasing literature in translation for the new unit, and what are the respective roles of UGL, Eng, Comp Lit, and MDL. Jo had called a meeting to discuss this, and some ideas were floated, but no firm conclusions were reached.) Serial holdings in the new library were also discussed, and we decided that we would not duplicate print holdings that are available in JSTOR, and we would include the most recent issues of currently subscribed titles prior to binding. Otherwise, individual subjects would need to decide the length of the backrun for individual titles, or in some cases when a title has ceased, the entire run might remain in the LLL (Bob gave an example of a titles in Cinema Studies). Having a browsing collection of new periodicals is a high priority, and in some cases, we might want to include currently received issues that are now going directly to STX. We started a discussion of the ref collection, and in the case of duplicates, if a title is held in the Ref Room, ENG and MDL can move theirs to Oak. If a dup is held between ENG and MDL, ENG will keep theirs. Further discussion on the collection parameters still needs to be held! Jzk 4/12/10
