Queensborough Community College The City University of New York Library Committee Minutes December 1, 2004 Members Present: Rob Becker, English; Jose Osorio, Foreign Languages; Matthew Trachman, Social Sciences, Committee Chairperson; Dr. K. Kim, Chief Librarian, ex­officio; Kathleen Allen, Administration Liaison. The meeting was called to order at 12:00 PM. 1. The minutes of the meeting of November 10, 2004 were approved. 2. Following the approval of the Minutes, there was brief discussion of ADA compliance issues. 3. Prof. Trachman reiterated the Academic Senate charge to the Committee: “to not conduct an assessment, but to suggest a process for doing one.” In this spirit, Dr. Kim distributed copies of past Library reports and assessments. These documents included: a. b. c. d. a Library self­study (completed April 9, 1996) a summary report of the above self­study (March 25, 1996) an external review of the self­study (August 11, 1998) “Library and Learning Resources,” a self­study prepared for Middle States (April, 1999) e. Middle States response to item d. (2000) f. “2001 Library User Survey” (August 8, 2001). This survey, conducted by the Library, is the second one in five years, the first Survey being included in the Middle States self­study, item d. g. Dr. Robert Kahn’s (former Vice President of Academic Affairs) incoming student experience survey (September 14, 2001) The Committee noted the wealth of assessment material present in the documents. After a brief discussion of additional assessments that might be useful, two measures for future administration were mentioned: a. Another user experience survey (to continue the five­year cycle that Dr. Kim has put into place, the last one being conducted in 2001) b. LibQUAL, developed and distributed by the Association of Research Libraries. This CUNY­wide library service costs $2,000 per campus administration and is a
premier library assessment tool. It records both student and faculty responses invaluable to Library assessment and planning. 4. To better prepare for the task of an overall Library assessment recommendation, the Committee decided to focus upon five primary areas of assessment and to assign each member to one. Reports would be generated for distribution and discussion at the next meeting of the Committee. The assignments were: a. national standards for libraries: Rob Becker b. CUNY­wide facilities: Jose Osorio c. the QCC Strategic: Kathy Allen d. ADA: Matthew Trachman e. Library staff concerns: Dr. Kim 4. The Committee set the next meeting for January 19, 2005. Reports will be the focus, as well as any additional questions pertaining to the materials distributed today. The meeting was adjourned at 12:45 PM. Respectfully submitted, Rob Becker
