2012-2013 Annual Report to Donors
Dear Alumni and Friends of the College:
This time last year, I was thrilled to tell you that we were weeks away from officially breaking ground
on our Veterinary Medical Learning Center (VMLC).
This year’s update: We can actually see the structure beginning to rise up from the ground!
Construction began on schedule, earlier this year, and despite the rainy summer, significant
progress has been made. You, too, may monitor our progress by visiting our VMLC construction
webcam at: www.vet.uga.edu/vmlc/webcam.php
About our cover:
The Westphalian on our cover is
Fabiano, a Grand Prix dressage
schoolmaster owned by Beverly
Vaughn of Dacula, Georgia.
Fabiano was featured in our
2013 Success Stories Calendar
of patients from the UGA Large
Animal Veterinary Teaching Hospital
(VTH). In June 2011, Fabiano
was brought to the UGA VTH for
treatment of colic, where surgeons
removed 11 feet of compromised
small intestine. Following a long
recovery, Fabiano returned to work
in January 2012. “Thank you all
for never giving up on him!” Ms.
Vaughn wrote to us when she
submitted his story to us. To share
a success story with us, please visit
www.vet.uga.edu/pr/successstories
We are still in need of funding to help us buy equipment to complete this project. Read more about
our fundraising update in this year’s Annual Report to Donors, and please consider making a gift to
help us meet our fundraising goal.
Several stories in this year’s Annual Report focus on people who have given to our VMLC campaign,
including:
n
A story about Nikita Sobh, who successfully fought off two bouts with cancer, thanks to the help
of our UGA Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Oncology Service. Thanks to Nikita’s owners, the
new chemotherapy room in our VMLC will be named after Nikita.
n
A story about our alumnus, Eugene Maddox (DVM ’59), who not only was instrumental in
helping us secure funding from the state to build our new facility, but who is also funding a
horse stall in honor of his family.
In addition, we have two very touching stories to share with you:
n
One, about a dedicated animal lover and friend of the College who didn’t recognize his own
love of animals until his wife adopted a cat from a local shelter.
n
The other, on our quest to endow a Fellowship
to honor Bruce Hollett (DVM ’72), a long-time
faculty member at our College who died in
April following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
We miss Dr. Hollett dearly, and know you will
remember him fondly with us as you read this
piece.
I hope you will enjoy these and the other stories
about our College.
As always, thank you so much for your support of
our endeavors. We are inspired by your faith in us,
and enjoy serving our stakeholders in all that we do.
Sincerely,
Fabiano’s photos were provided by

The Curtis family (Andrew, DVM 2010, second from the right) shares their joys and memorials through the UGA
CVM “Step by Step, Brick by Brick” program. Celebrating Andrew’s graduation, remembering beloved family pets,
and thanking grandparents are all wonderful reasons to purchase a brick or horseshoe that supports the College of

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine
Alumni and Friends FY13
Giving
Thanks to your generosity, the UGA
College of Veterinary Medicine raised
$10,202,923 in gifts and pledges from
alumni and friends in FY13 (compared
to the FY12 total of $17,802,520). The
College finished second in fundraising
among all 17 schools and colleges
within the University of Georgia.
The CVM’s alumni giving base
continues to be among the strongest
of all the University of Georgia’s
schools and colleges. Within FY13,
16% of the CVM’s alumni made gifts
to our College, which is down from
the 18% participation rate from our
alumni in FY12. Once again, we were
exceeded by only the School of Law,
which had a 25% alumni participation
rate. The CVM’s goal is to have at least
25% of our alumni giving annually.
Gifts restricted to the CVM from all
UGA alums (a total of 682 alums
from all UGA schools and colleges)
was $394,948 in FY13 (compared to
$330,634 in FY12).

Class Campaign/Reunion Giving
The FY13 Class Campaign culminated at the Saturday evening reception during
the 2013 Alumni Weekend, with a grand total of $138,876.11 in donations from
our alumni reunion classes—31 percent more than last year’s total!
Gifts from the Class of 1983 (top photo) totaled $27,820 (24% participation rate),
more than any other reunion class at the 50th Annual Alumni Weekend.
The Class of 1978 (middle photo) came in a very close second with their class
gifts totaling $27,175 (27% participation rate).
The Class of 1988 (bottom photo) boasted a 36% participation rate, the highest
of all the reunion classes. They also brought in the third-highest class donation
at $17,860.
The class of 1963 hit the highest percentage-of-goal mark among the reunion
classes, at 33% of their goal and $12,525 (28% participation rate). Thank you,
UGA CVM alums!

Fellowship to honor Hollett’s passion
for teaching, research, service
W
hen bulldog mascot owner Sonny Seiler met Dr.
Bruce Hollett (DVM ’72) for the first time,
he knew he’d met someone special. Seiler brought
in Uga II for a routine check-up at the UGA Veterinary
Teaching Hospital. He still speaks of the meeting fondly.
“He extended his hand and introduced himself and
got down on the floor with the dog on the waiting room
floor. It was an instant bonding,” Seiler said. “We got
to know Bruce Hollett and he gave me his telephone
numbers. And from that point on, he called the dogs his
boys. I was aware of the fact that he was very much a large
animal vet, but he stayed right on top of anything new in
the medical world that would affect an English bulldog.”
“The dogs just bonded with him,” Seiler added. “And
I think that is unique because it carried on through the
generations. He would tell us about great students and
he would make sure that the students who worked with
us were the very best students.”
4
Faculty, staff and students from the UGA College of
Veterinary Medicine wore purple in honor of Dr. R. Bruce
Hollett (center; purple shirt and tie, black pants) on
Monday, April 1, 2013. Dr. Hollett was a 1972 graduate of
the College. On the CVM faculty, he served as an associate
professor of large animal medicine; he also served the
College as director of the continuing education program,
for 22 years, and as acting associate dean for public
service and outreach from 2006-2008.
Seiler would later name Uga VIII, or “Big Bad Bruce,”
after Hollett, a gesture that meant the world to Hollett.
“He was as proud as if we’d named a son for him,” said
Seiler.
That same loyalty and dedication was true for
everyone Hollett came in contact with, not just his
most visible client. While at UGA, he served as a mentor
to students, a supportive co-worker, and a dedicated
veterinarian to clients with animals large and small.

When he passed away in April 2013 after a hardfought battle with cancer, the loss had a tremendous
impact on his students, co-workers and clients.
“He has meant a great deal to the College for decades,”
said CVM Dean Sheila Allen. “He came here partially
because of his passion for his area of expertise (animal
reproduction) and his passion for teaching. I think that’s
the legacy he will leave with us. He was very collegial, and
he was a terrific mentor for DVM and graduate students
as well.”
In recognition of his many years of work at the College
of Veterinary Medicine, and as a way to honor his legacy,
the College has established The Hollett Fellowship Fund
to support the education expenses of DVM and graduate
students who have an interest in animal reproduction.
An anonymous donor has pledged to match donations
to the fund up to $50,000. With a $100,000 minimum
needed to set up a fellowship, the College aims to garner
$50,000 in donations over the next five years.
By fostering future veterinarians who have a passion
for public service, the fellowship will surely honor
Hollett’s name.
“He was very passionate about his public service
mission,” said Allen. “He was a rare individual who could
relate to cattle farmers as well as dog breeders. That takes
a unique set of skills and he was very accomplished at
both.”
Hollett was also valued by his students and his peers.
“He was very collegial, and made a great contribution
to the well-being of the whole Department and College.”
said Andrew Parks, head of the department of large
animal medicine, in which Hollett was based. “He was a
great and caring teacher, particularly with small groups
of students; he was in his element with small groups of
students out on the farm. At any Continuing Education
meeting, he was always there with a warm smile and a
friendly handshake to welcome guests.”
Hollett served as director of the CVM’s Continuing
Education program for 22 years, noted Allen.
“He did a lot to welcome veterinarians back to
Athens and he made sure that we stayed cutting-edge in
our continuing education presentations,” said the dean.
Having a fellowship for students interested in animal
reproduction will hopefully help others to follow in his
footsteps.
“Having been a student here himself, he certainly
appreciated the burden that educational debt has on
graduates. I think Bruce would agree that it’s important
to try to minimize students’ educational debt,” said Allen.
Sonny Seiler, owner of the UGA mascot bulldogs, named
Uga VIII “Big Bad Bruce,” in honor of Dr. Hollett, who provided veterinary care to the Uga mascots. Seiler, left, and
Dr. Hollett are pictured with Uga VIII at the mascot’s 2010
collaring ceremony.
“The scholarships resulting from the Hollett Fellowship
will help students gain their education while having to
borrow less. The funding also can provide support to
allow students to gain learning opportunities elsewhere
they would not otherwise pursue. Sometimes if you offer
a little bit of financial assistance, that is what it takes to
encourage students to take advantage of training they
wouldn’t otherwise pursue. This fellowship will be a
wonderful tribute to Dr. Hollett’s passion for veterinary
education.”

UGA Pharmacy grad leaves gift to help educate
veterinarians
T
ammy Rogers (PharmD ’88) is
devoted to the important aspects of her life — pharmacy,
the University of Georgia and her
two English bulldogs.
That’s why she decided this
year to bequeath a gift to the
College of Veterinary Medicine in
her will.
“Animals are a huge part of
my life and so is the University of
Georgia,” she said. “In fact, my
two bulldogs are descendants of
Uga VI.”
Charlie and Scarlett are 4-yearold siblings born in Royston, Ga.
They have distinct personalities
and a love-hate relationship.
“They’ll cry if they can’t see
each other,” she said. “They’re my
babies.”
Rogers, a Birmingham-based
pharmacist, holds strong to her
roots. She f lies a Georgia f lag at
her house, which is surrounded by
Auburn and Alabama f lags. When
she first moved to Birmingham,
Rogers stuck to her alma mater
and searched for a veterinarian
who graduated from the
University of Georgia. Though the
office isn’t near her house, Rogers
continues to make the trip because
of her veterinarian’s educational
background.
“They’ve worked with bulldogs
at UGA and might have a better
knowledge than the general
practitioner,” Rogers said.
“Bulldogs are high maintenance
dogs and have unique ailments.
I can’t say enough about my
veterinarian and the College.”
Rogers thought a gift to the
College would be the best way to
express thanks.
“I don’t have any children
of my own. My animals are my
children,” she said. “I think the
best way to do the greatest good is
to make sure we have a lot of good
veterinarians in the world.”
During part of her time on
campus, Rogers worked in the
CVM pharmacy and saw the inner
workings of the Hospital. She feels
confident that her money will be
used well.
“I saw how well it ran and
the good training that students
received,” she said. “If it were
not for the College of Pharmacy,
I would leave everything to the

Rogers started a scholarship
with the pharmacy college last

adds up. A one-year snapshot for
tuition, living expenses, books

$1,025.
Rogers is still deciding the

Visible Progress for the Veterinary Medical
Learning Center
M
ost building projects start
the same way. They
appear to poke along at
the start because so much time is
involved with preparing the land,
creating the infrastructure and
building the foundation. Then,
suddenly in a short amount of time,
the building springs forth out of
the ground as vertical construction
begins. The UGA Veterinary Medical
Learning Center (VMLC) is no
different, and as of August this
year, the building has started taking
shape — literally.
Construction on the VMLC is
rapidly progressing, and despite some
delays due to the wet weather the
region has experienced, the project is
still on schedule to open early 2015.
The campus is located approximately
three miles east of the College of
Veterinary Medicine off College
Station Road, and will encompass five
structures and 300,000 square feet
when it is complete:
•
The main Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which houses the small animal and large animal hospitals. The second floor features offices, conference rooms and clinical pathology and research laboratories.
An Academic Building with classrooms, an auditorium and dining area.
A covered Lameness Arena.
A Farm Practice building.
An Large Animal Isolation facility.
The new VMLC is budgeted
to cost $97.7 million, of which the
state of Georgia has appropriated
$65 million. Of the remaining $32.7

million, just over $26 million had
been raised as of the end of the fiscal
year, leaving nearly $6.5 million left to
raise for furnishings and equipment.
Faculty and staff of the current
Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which
was built in 1979, treat more than
20,000 animals a year and have been
working in cramped conditions for
years.
The much-needed increase of
space will allow for many new features
including a separate entrance for
emergency patients; a total of 12
operating rooms including three
fully-integrated surgical suites with
cameras and imaging capabilities tied
in with the equipment; large waiting
rooms for clients to spread out while
they wait for their animals; grieving

According to UGA VTH Director
Gary Baxter, VMD, MS, DACVS, the
goal was to design the building for
future growth, while at the same time
build the facility to LEED (Leadership

Gold certification standards, focusing
on energy efficiency and earth-friendly
materials.
“We have been conscious of
making decisions with the LEED
certification in mind,” said Baxter, “but,
until the project is completed, reviewed
and certified, we won’t know what level
we have achieved.”
Examples of steps taken to earn
certification points include building
a retention pond on site to assist with
water conservation, inviting the UGA

A Stall for ‘Pearl’
Alumnus who helped secure state funding for
VMLC makes personal gift to honor family
E
ugene Maddox (DVM ’59) is
excited to see the new
Veterinary Medical Learning
Center (VMLC) become a reality.
When he represented District
172 in the Georgia General Assembly,
Maddox advocated for funding the
facility. He was there when the first
piles of dirt were shoveled during
the VMLC’s groundbreaking last
November. Now he’s funding a horse
stall in the new Large Animal Hospital.
“Veterinary medicine has always
been my love, and when I came out
of school, the focus was on large
animals,” he said. “There was a lot of
horse practice at that time, and I just
love horses.”
The stall will be named in honor
of “KATO Farm, Kallamity Corona

Maddox ran for Georgia State
Representative, District 172, in 2004.
He won and retired from veterinary
practice that December. He served
eight years in the Georgia General
Assembly. During his time under
the Gold Dome, Maddox helped to
secure $65 million the state of Georgia
appropriated for the Veterinary
Medical Learning Center.
After more than a decade of
planning and fundraising, the College
is now building the new Veterinary
Medical Learning Center, which
includes a new Veterinary Teaching
Hospital. The new space will include
classrooms and new equipment to
educate future veterinarians. The
plans include a facility with 140,000
square feet of hospital space (about
three times larger than the current
Hospital), green space for animals,
and flexibility for future expansion.

roads, the new space is 2.7 miles from
the existing CVM campus.
As part of the space, equine
clients and owners will be able to use
a lameness arena that will include a
farrier service and outpatient-holding
stalls. The new facility will feature an
ICU for mares and foals, specialized
floor surfaces, and natural light.
There will be four barns — outpatient,
healthy inpatient, ICU, and colic/food
animal. Last year, when the CVM sent
out a challenge to raise $1 million for
the fourth barn, Maddox answered the
call by pledging to sponsor a stall and
name it after Pearl.
“Veterinary medicine has been
my love, and I think we need this new
building,” he said. “I think it’s going
to be a wonderful asset for Georgia,
the University, and the College of
Veterinary Medicine.”
Maddox has now retired but is a
sustaining member of the American
Veterinary Medical Association,
the Georgia Veterinary Medical
Association (GVMA), and the
South Georgia Veterinary Medical
Association (SGVMA). He served as
president for the GVMA and SGVMA.
In addition, former Georgia Gov.
Zell Miller appointed Maddox to
the Georgia State Veterinary Board
in 1992, and he served until he was
elected to the General Assembly.
While in the House, he served on the
Agriculture and Consumer Affairs
Committee and was appointed as
secretary.
Since his graduation in 1959,
Maddox has seen the College and the
veterinary field evolve dramatically. At
that time, few veterinarians worked
with companion animals. Student
demographics have changed as well,
with women now comprising the
majority of enrollment, he noted.
Maddox has also seen an increase
in the use of technology and veterinary
technicians in animal health care,
and has been excited to learn about
various veterinary technology
programs around the state.
“Veterinary medicine is a great
profession, and so many animals
are in need,” he said. “As the field
continues to change and there is more
emphasis on protecting and taking
care of companion animals, veterinary
medicine is more important than ever.”
When construction starts on the
horse barns and stalls, Maddox looks
forward to visiting campus.
“While I’m very proud of the
University of Georgia, veterinary
medicine is my true love,” he said. “I’m
tickled to death that I can give back and
be an asset to the profession I love.”
“After Patsy and I raised four
sons, we now have a grandson, Kyle
Maddox, whose family lives in North
Carolina. He is a junior in the College
of Veterinary Medicine at North
Carolina State University. This makes
me one of the proudest grandpas in
the state of Georgia.”

Couple’s experience with VTH Oncology
Service inspires gift to VMLC
I
t all started with a lump.
Lou and Georgia Sobh were worried about Nikita, their white
Pomeranian, when a check-up with
their veterinarian turned into a
trip to UGA Veterinary Teaching
Hospital. Dr. Nicole Northrup, an
associate professor of oncology at
the College of Veterinary Medicine,
tested the lump on Nikita’s leg and
found that the pup had cancer.
Even with surgery, Nikita would
likely live only two years. Due to
the way it traveled through Nikita’s
bloodstream, the cancer could pop
up in another place in the future.
The Sobhs decided to push forward
with surgery.
“They got it soon enough that
they were able to get it all,” Georgia
Sobh said. “It was a wonderful

experience. Everybody loved visiting
Nikita and said he was their favorite
patient because he’s so cute.”
Then the cancer came back a
few years later. Nikita’s groomer
found a second lump, and the
Sobhs took another trip to the UGA
Veterinary Teaching Hospital. They
decided to move forward again, this
time with surgery and chemotherapy.
“He was such a strong guy. He
didn’t have any bad effects and
never seemed to be in pain,” Sobh
said. “He didn’t lose his hair. You
wouldn’t even know he was sick.”
Since then, the now 17-year-old
Pomeranian is still going strong.
Though he had frequent check-up
appointments, Nikita has been cancer
free since his last bout with cancer.
This year, the Sobhs decided
to give a gift to the Veterinary
Medicine Hospital Building Fund,
which is helping to pay the cost of

In recognition of the Sobh’s

“The Oncology Service saved
his life twice, and he never had
another recurrence,” she said.
“We’re inspired by them, and we
love the doctors.”
The Sobhs adopted Nikita
after a friend brought a white toy
munchkin named Hollywood to a
Super Bowl party. Lou Sobh knew
his wife wanted a small white dog
and decided to surprise her the next
month on Valentine’s Day.
“Here comes this little white
puppy, and we just fell in love
with him,” Georgia Sobh said. “We
heard the breed was of Russian
descent and named him after Nikita
Khrushchev.”
Within a few years, they
adopted Hollywood from their friend
and added Gizmo, another small
white dog, to the Sobh family. With
Nikita at 17 pounds, Hollywood at 7
pounds, and Gizmo at 4 pounds, the
couple claimed they had the perfect
“small, medium, and large” trio.
“We’re the type of people who
don’t see dogs as pets. They’re our
sons,” she said. “I couldn’t love
them any more if I gave birth to
them. We’re so thankful the cancer
team was able to save Nikita!”

One adopted cat, and the Parkers became lifelong animal lovers
Animals in-need drives Parkers’ passion to help
Photo provided by Jim Parker
W
hen Nancy Parker came home with a cat 15 years
ago, her husband wasn’t too
fond of the idea. But it wasn’t long
before he and Beetsie became best buds.
“We liked him so much, we decided
to get him a mate,” said Jim Parker
(BBA ’67, MBA ’68, PhD ’82), an airline
investment analyst for Raymond James.
At an animal shelter that year, the
Parkers found Petey, who fit perfectly
into the family. Beetsie and Petey ruled
the house for 14 years.
“We don’t have kids, and at first
we weren’t interested in having pets,”
Jim Parker said. “But we realized the
benefits of companionship, well-being
and entertainment they bring.”
A few months after Beetsie and
Petey died from renal disease and old age,
the Parkers headed back to the animal
Jim Parker (BBA ’67, MBA ’68, PhD ’82)
shelter. This time, they found a girl.
Now Allie is the house princess.
“We’re just delighted with her,” he
said. “She’s our little girl.”
When the Parkers took Beetsie and
Petey to the University for renal disease
treatment, they were saddened by the
injured and ill dogs and cats they saw.
To express appreciation for their shelter
animals and to further the care for
small animals that are in shelters, the
couple decided to donate to the College
of Veterinary Medicine’s Shelter
Medicine Fund.
Shelter medicine is a growing
specialty in veterinary medicine, and
UGA students have shown increased
demand for a program during the past
several years. The college has hosted an
annual student-run Shelter Medicine
Symposium since 2009, which brings
together shelter medicine professionals,
veterinarians, and students to hear from
speakers and exchange ideas.

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine
The Shelter Medicine Fund gives
students the opportunity to understand
their roles as veterinarians in the
community. Through the program,
students work with animals at shelters
and humane societies around Georgia.
They also run a local pet food bank, and
assist with injured animals. The CVM
emphasizes a few goals in educating
students about shelter medicine:
to raise awareness of the problems
associated with shelter animals, pet
overpopulation, animal welfare, and the
roles veterinarians can play in addressing
these issues. The CVM also stresses
that such programs are intended for
unowned animals, or animals belonging
to individuals with documented need.
“We realized what our cats meant
to us. Animals are a great benefit to
mankind, and we want to foster that,”
Parker said. “We want to help the College
take care of cats and dogs so others can
enjoy them as well.”
Parker has a long record of
giving to the University. In 1993, he
established the James Douglas Parker
Scholarship to help undergraduate
students in need of financial aid.
“When I was in school, I had a
similar type of scholarship,” he said.
“When I set up the scholarship, I was
putting in a return on my education.”
Several years later, Parker was
horrified by a news broadcast about a
man who was intoxicated and threw
a dog against his truck. The reporter
asked viewers to donate funds to help
the severely injured dog, and Parker was
proud to hear the dog was being treated
at his alma mater.
“I made a contribution right then,”
he said. “I became interested in the UGA
College of Veterinary Medicine based on
that story.”
When Jim and Nancy decided
to make their latest gift, they knew
the Shelter Medicine Fund was the
right choice. They’ve spoken with
Dr. Janet Martin, a faculty member
for shelter medicine, and are happy
to fund opportunities for students
to care for small animals.
“We want to help the veterinary
school to care for those animals that
don’t have an owner to care for them,”
Parker said. “Both of us support this idea
of caring for animals.”
Based on his previous giving
experience with the University, Parker felt
comfortable expanding his donations to
the College of Veterinary Medicine.
“The University does it by the book
and cannot misuse funding,” he said.
“There’s great oversight, and we thought,
‘This is the way to do it.’”
Most of all, the Parkers hope new
pet owners will be able to incorporate
shelter animals into a family, just as they
did with Beetsie, Petey, and Allie.
“Most dogs and cats love you
no matter what,” Parker said. “It’s
an unconditional love you can’t find
in human beings. We (people) have
shortcomings and are made that way,
but dogs and cats aren’t.”

Remembering their clients’ loved ones led to more
than two decades of consecutive giving
I
t’s now a tradition. For 23 years,
Steve Winokur (DVM ’89) and
Sherri Almand (DVM ’88) have
contributed to the UGA College of
Veterinary Medicine in the memory
of their clients’ deceased pets. The
couple have worked at Pharr Road
Animal Hospital in Atlanta since
graduation and after a few years
in practice decided to start the
collaboration.
“We thought it would be a
nice idea to do this in memory of
our clients’ deceased pets each
year, and the feedback has been
very favorable,” Winokur said.
“Sometimes the clients will match or
outdo our contributions, which is a
win-win for the clients, the memory
of the animal, and the College.”
Winkour and Almand have
seen the College grow since their
enrollment in the 1980s, and have
enjoyed living and working down
the road from their alma mater. In
particular, they’re proud to see their
mentor, Dean Sheila Allen, take the
helm of the school and run it with
precision.
“She was green and a female
surgeon when there weren’t many
of them at that time,” Almand
recalled about Dr. Allen, who was
a surgeon on the College’s Small
Animal Medicine and Surgery
faculty prior to joining the College’s
administrative ranks. “She was so
great to us as students, so we enjoy
seeing her in this position and taking
the school in a positive direction.”
She’s part of the reason they
continue to give back.
“With the new additions in place
and the programs moving forward
so strongly, it makes us want to
help and give even more,” Winokur
said. “We were all in it together way
back when, and we have nothing but
kudos and compliments for her.”
Their annual contributions go
toward the College’s companion
animal fund, and the research and
development program. The couple
remembers their mentors’ research
projects in small animal medicine,
surgery, and pathology and want to
continue the progress.
“When I was a senior, I
specifically remember Dr. Renee
Kaswan studying cyclosporine
related to ophthalmology,” Almand
said. When they see the College’s
Annual Reports and alumni
magazines each year, they know
they contributed to the progress.
“So many of the professors were

Meaningful to clients, veterinarians and the College
“It is hard to find anything positive about the death of a pet, but
this is one thing that adds more meaning. The Pet Memorial
donation is something very positive, and the clients are not
expecting it.”
— Mark Mosher, DVM ’81
“The Pet Memorials are a win/win. They are good for the client
and good for the clinic.”
— Tom Nemetz, DVM ’81 PhD

This report contains the names of donors who made gifts to the
University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine that were
processed through the Office of Development between July 1,
2012, and June 30, 2013. There are several reasons for your name
not appearing in what you believe to be the appropriate giving level
– or not appearing at all:
1. You made your gift either before July 1, 2012, or after June 30,
2013.
2. You made a pledge instead of an outright gift. If you made a
pledge between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013, but chose to
begin fulfilling it after June 30, 2013, your name will not appear
in this honor roll, which reflects only gifts received.
3. We omitted your name in error. If so, we would like to hear from
you. If you have questions or corrections, contact the Office of
Development, 501 D.W. Brooks Drive, Athens, GA 30602-7371.

Sylvia Byrd’s love for her favorite feline, Oreo, led her to leave a
scholarship in his honor: the Oreo and Sylvia Byrd Endowment
Fund. The fund will provide annual scholarships for second- or
third-year veterinary students in good academic standing with
demonstrated financial need.
If the College is included in your plan, PLEASE let us
