New Mexico Geologic Society 54th Fall Field Conference
Next year’s fall field conference (2003) will be held in westcentral New Mexico and on the Navajo Nation. The society
last visited the eastern part of this area in 1989 and the western part in 1951 and 1967. The trip will focus on the classic
Mesozoic strata and late Cenozoic volcanism of this area as
well as on the uranium ore deposits. The conference is hosted by William Berglof (University of Maryland), Spencer
Lucas, Larry Crumpler, and Andrew Heckert (New Mexico
Museum of Natural History and Science), and Steven
Semken (Dine College). Topics covered during the trip will
encompass virtually every aspect of geology. Accordingly,
potential authors are encouraged to submit papers on the
whole spectrum of geological sciences. The tentative itinerary is:
Day 1. Geology of the Defiance uplift and Chuska Mountains of the New Mexico–Arizona borderland, featuring
Mesozoic stratigraphy and sedimentation, with stops at
Todilto Park, Cenozoic intrusives and volcanics, and late
Cenozoic tectonics.
Day 2. Geology of the northern flank of the Zuni Mountains, featuring Mesozoic stratigraphy, sedimentology, and
paleontology.
Day 3. Geology of the Mt. Taylor–Malpais volcanic fields
and Mesozoic rocks and uranium ore deposits of the Grants
district.
Authors are asked to send an intent to submit a manuscript and/or minipaper that includes (1) manuscript title
November 2002, Volume 24, Number 4
and authorship, (2) estimated number of double-spaced
manuscript pages, and (3) estimated number of figures to the
guidebook co-editor listed below on or before November 1,
2002, by e-mail (preferred), phone, FAX, or letter. We ask that
authors observe the current 25 page (double-spaced) manuscript limit (about seven printed pages with figures). Papers
longer than 10 printed pages will be considered on a case-bycase basis and will require page charges. Minipapers will be
limited to 1,500 words and one figure. Authors are required
to secure two external reviews for each paper. Final manuscripts, complete with clean figures (eps files with tiff preview format preferred) and reviews, will be due on February
15, 2003. Only minipapers pertaining to geological or other
natural-science topics will be considered. Information
regarding specific page limits and manuscript preparation is
available from the NMGS Web site
http://geoinfo.nmt.edu/nmgs/events.html.
Please direct all communications regarding manuscript
preparation to:
