Job Summary:
This position is responsible for directing the programs within the Family Services Division and managing
general agency duties including intergovernmental relations and grants, budgetary, personnel, and planning
functions. This includes program planning and evaluation for adult and children’s services, developing and
managing the budget for the division, and acting on departmental management and human resources
matters in the Director’s absence. The Family Services division is comprised of the following service areas:
child protective services, foster care and adoptions, Links (independent living services for youth), adult
protective services, adult in home and placement services, guardianship, adult care home monitoring,
services intake, crisis management and emergency assistance, and foster home licensing and training. This
position includes planning, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of all activities and overseeing all
professional social work services within the agency. Chatham County DSS strives to be a leader in the field
in providing effective and meaningful services to children, adults and families and this position is
responsible for developing a program to meet this goal. The Deputy Director represents the agency and
social work programs on multiple local and state committees and works to prioritize the needs of the
community and local agencies in the provision of all human services. Work is performed independently and
under the Director’s supervision. This person also acts on behalf of the Director in his or her absence.
Candidates must have thorough knowledge of methods, principles and techniques of administration and
social work practice. This includes human resources, program planning, budgeting and accounting,
casework supervision and training. The Deputy Director has considerable knowledge of social and
economic factors in the community, and local agencies and resources. In addition, ability to interpret and
apply the laws, regulations and policies which govern social services programs. Skill in directing and
leading a large staff of social workers and supervisors and related professionals and students engaged in a
variety of services. Ability to establish effective working relationships with local and state government
officials, the public and other professionals. Coordinates technology use and advancement for the division.
Strategizes with Information Technology Department to determine how technology can be used to enhance
administration of programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree from an accredited school of social work and four years of social work or counseling
experience, two of which were supervisory; or bachelor’s degree in social work and five years of social work
or counseling experience, two of which were supervisory; or bachelor’s degree in human services field or
related curriculum including at least 15 semester hours in courses related to social work or counseling and
six years of social work or counseling experience, two of which were supervisory; or an equivalent
combination of training and experience. Demonstrated proficiency with technology including document
management systems and web-based programs preferred.
Full Time – 40 Hours Per Week
Salary Range: $58,854 - $75,038
