McDowell County Government is recruiting for the position of Social Services Director. Position is appointed by and
reports to the County Manager and the Board of Commissioners. As the agency director, the position has the overall
managerial responsibility for the operations of the department. Duties include day-to-day management of programs,
policies, and procedures as directed in conformity with state and county policy and legal requirements. Position provides
leadership and direction to staff to ensure the requisite delivery of services to the citizens of McDowell County.
Ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of government budgeting, human behavior, social work skills
techniques, management principles and practices, legal aspects of public welfare programs, and applicable federal
state laws, rules and regulations. Must be able to exercise sound judgment, communicate effective leadership,
develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public, and with federal, state
local officials.

Minimum Training and Experience Requirements: Master’s degree in Social Work and two years of significant supervisory
experience in the delivery of client services is strongly preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and five years of
supervisory experience in the delivery of client services, in Social Services may be considered, or an equivalent
combination of training and experience.
