Academic Advisement

Academic Advisement
The purpose of Academic Advisement is to assist both degree and non-degree students in
developing meaningful educational plans that are compatible with their life goals, both
short and long-term, and aiding them in dealing with related areas such as career goals,
motivation, and advanced study. The ultimate responsibility for making decisions about
educational plans and life goals rests with the individual student. The academic advisor
should assist students by helping to identify and assess alternatives and the
consequences of their decisions.

Changes to the Academic Advisement Plan
This year we made a few changes to the Academic Advisement
No
Plan. The Advisement Center is responsible for seeing the
majority of continuing students on campus. These changes were
done in an effort to increase consistency and flow of information
to students. It may be a bit early to assess this indicator, but so
far preliminary results have shown that students are less confused
and have been complaining less about being sent around from
department to department.
Increase graduation rates
In collaboration with Academic and Student Affairs, the
Yes
Advisement Center has been working to streamline the degree
audit system. Students are advised and given a graduation audit
in the same meeting. These audits serve as reminders to
students, and help them understand the requirements left to
satisfy their remaining degree requirements.

students. Rather than send students to
multiple departments for assistance, it
was decided that a more centralized
hub for advisement would be best for
students. There as still a few primary
academic departments who do
advising, but the majority will be done
at the Academic Advising Center. Also,
students with 25 earned credits and a
cumulative grade point average of 2.50
or higher are now able to self advise.

Point of Service Surveys
Increase completion rate of this
survey above 88%
In the past the office has had
a better response rate when
advisors collected surveys
directly from students before
they exited their cubicles.
Last year, we encouraged
students to leave the
completed surveys with the
front office receptionists. We
will initiate the old collection
process for the 2012-13
academic year and evaluate
the results in the next
year-end report.
