MILITARY & VETERANS SERVICES
Mission: The Office of Military and Veterans Services provides support and assistance to our military service members, veterans, and their families as they pursue their academic goals at Queensborough Community College. We
meet that objective by providing intentional and focused outreach to our population, while assisting our students with admissions, career services, financial aid/benefits, benefit certification, academic advisement, outside agency
referrals, and other areas that may arise.
College strategic objectives:
1. C.1 Offer comprehensive faculty & staff development program
Division strategic objectives :
1. V.a Increase awareness and participation of cross training and professional
development experiences and opportunities
Note: Relevant college-wide strategic objectives should be selected from the college’s strategic plan. Each division strategic objective should align with a college-wide strategic objective.

Actual outcomes
Created a new website where students must submit information for
benefits certification. Mariela Hernandez, COA, was also instructed
on the benefits certification process and was made a Certifying
Official with the VA. Her collaboration has made the process faster
and more organized.

Military/Veteran Tracking
Ensure all students are coded
properly
Our office do not have much control over this benefits because they
are processed by the service components the student/veterans is
serving with.
However, we have printed materials and resources that explain the
application procedures for these programs.
Still ongoing. Some events such the veterans’ orientation may need
to be conducted differently in order to get the most out of it. Other
yearly events such as Veterans Day Dinner will stay as is.
Our PROVE interns help with this task and were successful in
reaching and helping many students. However, we found that most
of our students do not have any comments or flags from their
instructors in Starfish.
Although all service indicators and student group codes were placed
correctly, the Veterans Information Page in CUNY first had not been
completed for most student veterans. This is resulting in an
inaccurate count of our student veterans by some reports at the
CUNY level.
Benefit Advisement

Completion report due early July (specific deadlines may vary by year).
Recommended action plans*
Updates and further customization to the web site are necessary.
We are planning on authenticating the website with Tiger Mail or
CUNYfirst log-in credentials.
We are testing the use of text messaging with students who
opted in through the benefits certification request web site.
The office wants to explore the use of automatic calls and voice
massaging to expedite multiple calls with a single message.
Because these programs have the Bursar’s Office as their primary
point of contact, we have coordinated that all TA recipients be
referred to our office so we may count them and assist them
appropriately.
Conduct our veterans’ orientation through a web video
conference. If recorded, this same orientation may be published
in our website for other students to view and benefit from it.
Although we will continue monitoring Starfish, we want to focus
our resources primarily in following-up with new students and
students on academic probation.
Populate the Veterans Information page in CUNYfirst for all new
and continuing students. This information must be taken from
the veteran’s discharge papers and service separation document
(DD form 214).

Actual outcomes
Add tables for additional division strategic objectives and corresponding department strategic objectives, as needed.
For each division strategic objective, the department should have one or more strategic objectives intended to support that department in the achievement of the division objective. Each department strategic objective should have at least one indicator (key performance
indicator) and one expected outcome, with an action plan and timeline to achieve that outcome.
At the mid-year point, the department reports partial or preliminary outcomes. At the end of the year, the department reports actual outcomes.
An indicator is the measurement by which the objective will be assessed. The outcome is the product of the work in support of achieving the objective. For example, if the strategic objective for Admissions is “to expand feeder high schools,” the indicator might be “applications
received from new feeder high schools,” and the expected outcome might be “at least one application from five new feeder high schools.”
