A new body of work is in progress for my next solo exhibition
(2009); the works proposed in my upcoming PSC Research Award
will complement this current body of work in contextual and
aesthetic terms.
An application for the PSC Research Award (2009) proposes the
creation of six paintings that would allow me to further explore a
theme that has recurred throughout my artistic practice.
Application Pending: NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts)
Donated painting to the collection of Friends Seminary, 222 East
16th Street, New York, New York.

Began training for the WID/WAC program and have completed
my planning portfolio for a writing-intensive painting course.
Served on department search committee.
Attended QCC’s Open House, November 1, 2009, and conducted
tours of the “C” building, which included studios, computer labs,
and classrooms, as well as student works on display.
Worked with colleague to select and install student work to
display in the theatre lobby in celebration of QCC’s Fiftieth
Anniversary.
Working with the Office of Sponsored Programs, have applied for
funding to bring a professional development workshop to
department; workshop would bring an artist and author on the
subject to conduct two series of workshops with graduating
students who are interested in a career in the visual arts;
workshops would be open to faculty members who might then be
able to incorporate the material covered into their own courses.
Served as a juror for Bayside High School’s Annual Art
Competition.

Results: In general, students did well in terms of recognizing art historical terminology and applying it
to the analysis of artworks and art historical contexts. They succeeded in discerning art
historical contexts and the impact of these contexts on the making of art objects. They
displayed these skills both in exam multiple-choice questions and on exam essay questions.
However, students had more trouble with factual art historical knowledge in the form of slide
ID questions. More had trouble memorizing names and dates.
Action Plan: Student performance on the most important skills met or exceeded expectations. The only
area of disappointment was in rote memorization of facts. That said, this is a less important
area than a student’s ability to utilize nomenclature and critical concepts in the interpretation
of artworks and in the recognition of art historical contexts. In terms of improving rote
memorization, perhaps students may be advised as to the use of flash cards; although this is
something a number of them are already incorporating into their study techniques.

Course Objectives and Course Assessment
Results: Most students successfully revised their designs and successfully followed layout requirements
and demonstrated their technical knowledge of InDesign and Illustrator. They were able to
remember, understand and analyze lectures on technical information and design strategies.
Based on observation, the revision of their designs from sketch to digital rough draft to
critiqued draft through final file helped them to improve achievement in Learning Outcome
#1. Without such revision, assessment would be much lower in this area. Students who did
not achieve as highly in factual and procedural knowledge often did not read the assignment
carefully or rushed to complete the assignment. On the lowest end, students who did not
revise, or did not follow directions and/or did not have the factual/procedural knowledge from
previous classes did not achieve satisfactory results.
Action Plan: The most difficult aspect of the assignment for students is creating a dynamic relationship
between text and image. I already show many examples of good layout design, and ask
students to bring in examples as well. Often, the students who bring in samples spend time
outside of class looking and researching design – and they score higher in general. Those who
do not actively “look” score lower overall. Perhaps, adding a weekly assignment to bring in an
interesting design (which the class can discuss) to create a design bulletin board would help
all of the students.
