Dear Graduate and Professional Students,
As we enter the month of February, you are likely
deeply engaged in your academic work, anticipating
mid-term exams to be given or taken and looking
forward to a brief respite during the spring break in
early March.
According to Wikipedia, February was named after
the Latin term februum, which means purification, via
the purification ritual Februa held on February 15
(full moon) in the old lunar Roman calendar.
January and February were the last two months to
be added to the Roman calendar, since the Romans
originally considered winter a monthless
period. 2012 is also a Leap Year. February 29 is a
date that usually occurs every four years, and is
called leap day. This day is added to the calendar in
leap years as a corrective measure, because the
earth does not orbit around the sun in precisely
365 days. Many of you may remember the short
poem developed to help all school children to
remember the months of the year:
Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November;
All the rest have thirty-one
Save February, she alone
Hath eight days and a score
Til leap year gives her one day more.

today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the

Life in Boston:
So it’s Valentine’s Day…
Think outside the chocolate box!
1. Coolidge Corner Theatre Presents:
Mortified’s Doomed Valentine’s Day Show
Monday, February 13 at 7:30 pm:
Not a fan of the gooiest day of the year? Does the thought of stuffed
bears, heart-shaped chocolate boxes, and overpriced roses make you
want to stick someone with a thorn? Then come commiserate with
others at Mortified Boston’s Doomed Valentine’s Day.
2. The Beehive
Why limit yourself to just one night -- celebrate your loved one for
"5 Days of Luv'n!" This 5-day love fest from Feb. 10- 14 will include
brunches, dinners, live music, and an extensive and unique list of
champagne choices. Dinner is served from 5:30 p.m. - 1 a.m.
Friday and Saturday, 5:30 p.m. - 11 p.m. Sunday - Tuesday.
3. Bella Luna Restaurant
Bella Luna is hosting Prince-inspired (the "Purple Rain" kind, not the royal
kind) Valentine's dinner on Feb. 14. It features a seductive four-course meal,
Prince tunes as well as music by DJ Bruno, and lots of dancing. Guests are
encouraged to dress up in their ―princely‖ best — "Diamonds and Pearls"
optional. Seating starts at 5 p.m. Dinner will cost $38 per person.
4. Temple Bar
With full vegetable options from the three-course prix fixe menu
and a vegetarian tasting menu, Temple Bar is the perfect place to
bring your vegetarian date. If veggies aren't your thing, don't worry.
There are plenty of options for meat eaters, too.
Dinner is $49 per person or $39 per person before 6 p.m.
Add wine pairings for $19.
5. Upstairs on the Square
At Upstairs on the Square, it's a near month long celebration of Valentine's
Day. Starting Feb. 2, the Cambridge spot will host a variety of events
including concerts, wine nights, teas, and dinners.
Visit their website for full details and pricing.
6. Chocoholics anonymous at Max Brenner
Got a sweet tooth? This restaurant features an indulgent chocolate
menu, from build-your-own s'mores to chocolate pizza. The
Boylston spot also serves typical dinner fare, but shouldn't you
sweeten up to your date by eating dessert first (and second)?
7. Play with your food at Kaze Shabu Shabu
Who needs a chef when you have this sweet little shared cooking pot? At
Kaze, patrons are given a pot of seasoned broth along with vegetables,
meats, and seasonings, which they can cook "shabu-shabu" style right at the
table. ("Shabu-shabu" means "swish swish" in Japanese.) This adventure is a
sure way to have a little fun with your meal, and your date.
8. Get cheesey at The Melting Pot
Nothing says "romantic" more than melted cheese, right? Dip skewered
meats, vegetables, and more in a warm, gooey pot of melted cheese fondue. For dessert, swap out the savory for the sweet -- choice from things
like fruit, marshmallows, poundcake, and more to coat in melted chocolate.
