Tips For College Success
Congratulations on making the choice
to be a college student! As you probably
already know, college is not easy. It takes time,
dedication and a variety of tools and skills to be
a successful college student.
Be Connected
• Get involved in a Student Club/
Association.
• Attend student workshops and seminars
on campus.
Depending on where you are on your academic
path, the following tips can help you to either
get started or give you a few new strategies to
consider.
Manage Your Time
• Write important dates into a daily planner
(i.e. exams, assignments).
• Schedule specific times in your planner
for class, study, work, and personal time.
• Set reminders in your phone.
• Use free time wisely (e.g., review notes
while on the bus).
• Prioritize. Prepare a “To Do” list starting
with the most important tasks at the top.
• Be present and on time for all of your
classes.
• Begin working on assignments/papers as
early as possible. Avoid letting work pile
up.
• Make time for you to relax, have fun and
reward yourself for accomplishing your
goals.
• Accept help when it is offered.
• Initiate conversation with classmates.
• View exhibits at the Art Gallery and
Holocaust Center.
Study Skills & Memorization
• Rewrite and review your class notes.
• Highlight important information in your
notebooks and textbooks.
• Write down whatever your professor emphasizes
as important to know or remember.
• Understand the different ways the information
is presented (e.g., books, articles, videos, etc.).
• Go swimming, walk on the track, or work
out at the gym.
• Hang out at the Student Union Building.
• Join a sports team.
Take Care of You!
• Participate in activities that you enjoy.
• Share with others what you have learned.
• Find healthy ways to relieve stress (e.g.,
Counseling, exercising, deep breathing,
etc.).
• Utilize the free tutoring services on campus.
• Get enough sleep.
• Study in an environment without distractions.
• Spend time with friends/family.
• Ask someone to test you.
• Eat a well-balanced diet.
• Use flash/index cards.
• Avoid alcohol/drugs.
• Recite information out loud.
• Talk to others in your class about getting
together to study/review.
• Relate the information you learn to something
in your life.
• Talk to your Professors. Ask questions. Get
clarification. Show you are interested!
• Review, review, review! Repetition is key in
helping retain information.
