As you probably already know, college is not easy. It takes time, dedication and a variety of tools and skills to be a successful college student. Be Connected • Get involved in a Student Club/ Association. • Attend student workshops and seminars on campus. Depending on where you are on your academic path, the following tips can help you to either get started or give you a few new strategies to consider. Manage Your Time • Write important dates into a daily planner (i.e. exams, assignments). • Schedule specific times in your planner for class, study, work, and personal time. • Set reminders in your phone. • Use free time wisely (e.g., review notes while on the bus). • Prioritize. Prepare a “To Do” list starting with the most important tasks at the top. • Be present and on time for all of your classes. • Begin working on assignments/papers as early as possible. Avoid letting work pile up. • Make time for you to relax, have fun and reward yourself for accomplishing your goals. • Accept help when it is offered. • Initiate conversation with classmates. • View exhibits at the Art Gallery and Holocaust Center. Study Skills & Memorization • Rewrite and review your class notes. • Highlight important information in your notebooks and textbooks. • Write down whatever your professor emphasizes as important to know or remember. • Understand the different ways the information is presented (e.g., books, articles, videos, etc.). • Go swimming, walk on the track, or work out at the gym. • Hang out at the Student Union Building. • Join a sports team. Take Care of You! • Participate in activities that you enjoy. • Share with others what you have learned. • Find healthy ways to relieve stress (e.g., Counseling, exercising, deep breathing, etc.). • Utilize the free tutoring services on campus. • Get enough sleep. • Study in an environment without distractions. • Spend time with friends/family. • Ask someone to test you. • Eat a well-balanced diet. • Use flash/index cards. • Avoid alcohol/drugs. • Recite information out loud. • Talk to others in your class about getting together to study/review. • Relate the information you learn to something in your life. • Talk to your Professors. Ask questions. Get clarification. Show you are interested! • Review, review, review! Repetition is key in helping retain information.
