Our goal is to develop an efficientsynthesisofCuS2whichcanbeconductedbyundergraduatestudentsduringthecourseoftwo 3hourteachinglaboratories.Theprocessofpreformingthesereactionscanbebrokendownintosteps. Firstthereactionsvesselsneededforthesynthesismustbemade.Wemakethesevesselsbyusinga methane-oxygentorchandstockglasstubing.Oncethevesselsaremadetheyarecoatedtoprotectthe reagentsinsideofthetube.Thenextstepistoloadthechemicalsintothevesselandsealthevessel undervacuum.Thisallowsforalmostallthecontaminantswhicharedetrimentaltothereactiontobe removed.Finallythevesselsareplacedintoacomputercontrolledhightemperaturefurnacetoallow thereactionstotakeplace.Typicaltemperaturesthesereactionsareconductedatareover500ºC.The reactionstake1weekafterwhichthevesselsareopenedandthecontentsareexamined.Usingsimple opticalmicroscopesstudentswillselectsinglecrystalswhichtheycancharacterizebyFTIRandresistivity measurements.Thistypeofbasichightemperaturesolidstatechemistryisusedeverydaytosynthesize newandmorepowerfuldigitalcomponents,magnetics,andopticaldevices.
