Academic Literacy Catalog Summer 2015
Hello, Academic Literacy students.
This catalog will give you an idea of the opportunities available to you
this summer. Not all of the courses outlined in this catalog will be
available to you, as eligibility for placement depends on your current
class and the grade you receive in that class.
If you are planning to take a summer course, you must understand that
your responsibilities as a student will increase because:
• You are making a commitment! All the courses outlined in this
catalog are going to be intensive and challenging, so be prepared
to dedicate a portion of your summer to your education.
• Attendance is important! You will be dropped from the course if
you’re excessively absent or late.
• You are taking part in a community! You are expected to be an
active contributor to your classroom and will be taking part in fun,
group based projects.

What’s the difference? How do I know which ones I can take? Refer
to the rest of the booklet, but also remember that your placement
depends on your ACT or CATW grade, as well as your class grade.
Can I use the computer lab this summer? If you are enrolled in any BE
classes, you may use the computer lab located in Humanities 239 for
independent studying, but they will not count as tutoring hours.
Do I need to go to tutoring? Every BE course this summer will require
tutoring hours. Tutoring is mandated by the Academic Literacy
department to ensure that students are using their out of class hours
efficiently.
How much do I need to pay to attend these classes? BE courses this
summer are free of charge.
How many times can I be absent? Attendance is taken very seriously
with our summer courses, and you risk failure if you miss more than
one class. These courses are highly intensive—missing crucial class
time might position you for a very difficult struggle through the rest of
the class.
I’m taking an ALP Course this summer, so is the English 101 class
going to be free as well? Not automatically. Thanks to the STEM Waiver
Grant given to the college, if you register for and complete a STEM
course (Science, technology, engineering, Math) in July, your English
101 class in June will be free. However, if you do not register for and
complete a STEM course in July, then you will need to pay for the
English 101 portion of the ALP program.
