Athletes in Action!
The month of April was a hectic one for student-athletes between classes, competitions and
balancing extracurricular activities on campus. In spite of all these commitments, our students
did a great job with giving back to the community. Below are a few highlights from April.
Thank you to everyone who made a difference.
White Ribbon Campaign-On Wednesday, April 10th at 11:30 a.m., football student-athletes,
faculty, staff and students joined forces by walking for a great cause. The White Ribbon
Campaign began on campus in 2008 because of football players Daniel Smith and Al Ruiz
They saw a need for awareness, got the football team involved, and worked hard to make it
happen. The tradition continues five years later. The White Ribbon Campaign is the world’s
largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women and girls, promote
gender equity, healthy relationships and a new vision of masculinity.
Girl Scouts Sports Sampler– On Friday, April 5th, over a 100 girl scouts from throughout the Hudson Valley visited Marist College and participated in L.E.A.P’s annual Girl Scout Sports Sampler. Student-athletes from soccer, tennis, lacrosse,
swimming and diving, track and cross-country, volleyball and basketball all came to together for an event that had to be
rescheduled because of a snow storm in February. This rescheduling did not damper attendance or anyone’s spirit involved. Girl Scout attendees were able to participate in six sports and learn the basics of being active and safe in a fun and
welcoming environment. L.E.A.P would like to send a thank you to everyone who volunteered and look forward to making this event even better next year!
Special Olympics– On Sunday, April 7th, student-athletes from men and women's soccer, men and women's swimming
and diving, football, men and women's track and field, and men and women's lacrosse participated in the annual Marist
College Special Olympics Sectionals Tournament. Students assisted with the basketball skills competition, basketball
games, aquatics competition and powerlifting competition. The mission of Special Olympics Hudson Valley is to provide
year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for all children and adults with
intellectual disabilities giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience
joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, Special Olympics athletes and the community.
Through their participation in Special Olympics, athletes gain confidence and build a positive self-image, which carries
into the classroom, the home, the workplace and the community. Marist athletics has been fortunate to have had the opportunity to assist with Special Olympics’ mission.

Chuckie Looney and Atiq Lucas Give Back
Saturday: Closed
The weekend of April 12th through 13th were special days for SAAC representatives and Marist football players Atiq Lucas and Chuckie Looney. Their
hard work and care for their dear friend Joey Suchanek was highlighted as
they raised $5000 for research towards Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva
(FOP). FOP is a rare disorder that Marist student Joey Suchanek suffers from.
FOP, sometimes referred to as Stone Man Syndrome, is an extremely rare disease of the connective tissue. Atiq and Chuckie decided it was time to raise
awareness of this rare disease and coordinated a weekend dedicated to Joey.
On Saturday, April 12th, t-shirts were sold and a 50/50 raffle drawings occurred at the men’s lacrosse game to assist with their fundraising efforts. On Sunday, April 13th, the weekend
would continue with field day festivities. Events such as tug of war, the crab walk, and leap frog occurred and
the event was supported by several student-athletes. FOP is a tough disease for Joey but Lucas was glad they
could help. “This will not be the only time we support Joey. Joey is a great person and friend. It’s tough on
him but I know giving him support and camaraderie is something he cherishes and it’s something I cherish as
well.” If you would like further information about how you can support Joey, view his page here at:

Preparing for Finals
2
Whether you are ready or not, finals are coming to town! Below are a
few tips to help make finals a success!
1. Have a game plan: Be aware of the date, time and location of the exam. Is
Student-Athletes of the
month for May 2013
it a cumulative or non-cumulative exam ? This will affect how you prepare and
study.
2. Gather your work: Organize notes, gather old exams, slides and anything else that can assist
you with studying for each of your class exams.
3. Review your notes– Have a study schedule for when you will focus on each class and how
you will tackle the notes from throughout the semester.
4. Attend review sessions– Check to see if your professor will provide a review session over the
semester. This gives you the opportunity to ask questions on anything you still may have
concerns about with the course.
5. Find a study group– They are not for everyone but if you thrive with sharing notes and ideas
with others then try to find a study group within your class that will focus on the test and
help your prepare for your final.
6. Reward yourself– Give yourself a break with a reward. For instance, every two hours you
study, you can treat yourself to 20 minutes of Facebook, exercise, a walk or even a call to a
friend.
7. Eat and sleep well– Your brain and body needs to be prepared and well-rested in order for
you to do well on your exams. A healthy mind equals healthy grades.
8. Do your best– Above all else, remember that if you have prepared efficiently for your finals
then you have to trust in your abilities and focus on doing well. Good Luck!
Patrick Deedy– Cross
Counrty/Track and Field
Patrick is an organized, mature,
and hardworking young man
who also partakes in community
service and campus involvement.
He was a volunteer at the finish
line at the Boston Marathon
where he demonstrated heroism.
When the first explosion went
off, Pat sprang into action. He
was at a medical tent where he
helped the medical staff hand out
supplies and assisted when he
could. This fearlessness is a rare
characteristic, and when Patrick
ran the 5,000 meter in the Stony
Brook Invitational on April 20th,
he yelled out “This is for Boston!” as he sprinted to the finish
line. He finished the race with a
35 second personal-best time!
Patrick is a role model for current and future student-athletes
due to his selflessness, loyalty,
courage, excellence, and dedication.
Chelsea Botta– Women’s Soccer
Chelsea has demonstrated effort
and excellence in academics with
a 3.6 GPA and was named to the
Capital One Academic AllAmerican Women’s Soccer Division I Third Team. Chelsea has
also been an active member of
the Marist community serving on
SAAC, participating in LEAP
events, and numerous community service projects: Special Olympics, Girl Scout Sports Sampler,
Hagan Elementary School visits.
She is also very supportive of her
fellow student-athletes and can
be seen cheering at various
sporting events. Chelsea was
just named the School of Management’s Intern of the Year and
has secured a full-time position
with Bank of American in Boston, MA. Overall, Chelsea is the
definition of a team player and
has exhibited good sportsmanship and leadership at all times.
Networking Night with L.E.A.P
On Thursday April 25, 2013, L.E.A.P held it’s
second annual career speed networking night n the
Cornell Boathouse. Attendees were able to mingle
with fellow female student-athletes from several
sports while also networking with several professional women from the Hudson Valley. The topics
discussed included life after sports, networking,
interviewing skills, managing expectations, work/
life balance and . The professional women came
from several backgrounds which included education, medicine, business, coaching, non-profits, entrepreneurship and law. With such a strong showing from our student-athletes, it was great to have a
