Where Are They Now? Nick Gent ‘12, Men’s Soccer
Hometown: Poughkeepsie
Current City: Fishkill, NY
Occupation: Commercial Lending Relationship Manager at M&T Bank
What are you currently doing at the moment? I am currently going through M&T’s Relationship Management sales training program. Two weeks out of every month, I leave my home
office to travel to Baltimore or Buffalo where I take a deep dive into the fundamentals and
creditworthiness of potential borrowers. When I am in my home office, my manager is
working to integrate me into the Hudson Valley business community and prepare me to
manage my own portfolio of commercial business clients.
How did you land your current position? In the winter of my senior year at Marist I was enrolled in Professor Haughey’s Fixed Income Fund. We had guest speaker Mike Keegan come to one of the class
sessions. Mike is the Regional President for M&T in the Hudson Valley and Albany regions. He spoke to us about
his role at M&T and gave us an idea of how to get a foot in the door. I asked Mike questions during his presentation and we continued our dialogue afterwards via email. Within a few weeks, Mike brought me in to interview
with M&T and, after considering a few other offers I had, I chose M&T.
Biggest struggle after graduating and how did you overcome it? I have not run into any hardships of note since
graduation given how well Marist prepared me for the real world. I had a job setup, a place to live and my finances in order. I owe a lot of the preparedness to the mentorship I received from business professors and my
internship experiences.
What do you enjoy the most about your current alumni status? Working in the Hudson Valley, my Marist degree
carries a lot of weight. I was asked by my manager to join a committee at Marist known as Hudson Valley Scholars. The committee matches local businesses with Marist students from the local area and provides them with
scholarships. As a local student, getting involved was a natural fit. It gives me the opportunity to give back to the
College which served me very well. I have also maintained close ties with a few of my favorite professors and
look forward to keeping this line of communication open.
Best memory at Marist? My best memory at Marist relates to my athletic career on the Men’s Soccer team. In the
fall of 2011 we had the opportunity to travel to Disney World for the MAAC tournament which was extremely
memorable. The opportunity to work with Dr. Rothberg through my capping class and present the Greystone
Equity Fund to the board of trustees come in as close seconds.
Tips for life after college: My biggest tip is find balance. Just like student-athletes juggle athletics, academics and
social lives while in school, you must also maintain a balance between work and your social life after graduation.
Also, start applying to jobs, yesterday. I submitted 300 job applications in November of my senior year and had
7 interviews by May. If you want to graduate with a job, start looking now.
Any advice you would like to give to current student-athletes? My best pieces of advice are rather simple: 1) Network with everyone. In the world of business, who you know pays dividends 2) Ask questions. The best way to
express your intellect is to ask insightful questions. 3) Work smart. Working hard is vital to success, but being
able to work smart and position yourself while working hard will give you a leg up on the competition.

Pumpkin Drive for Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie
On Thursday, October 24, several teams participated in a Make A Difference Day
project for The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie. Teams were asked to donate
pumpkins which would be used for The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie’s
pumpkin walk on October 26. All proceeds at the event are donated to The Soldier’s Best Friend foundation. Soldier’s Best Friend is a non-profit in Arizona that
pairs and trains service dogs with veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) at no cost to the veteran .
The youth and adults involved at the Children's Home of Poughkeepsie, who often receive charitable donations from the community, decided it was time to give back. With the pumpkin donations received, the
children will carve them and make candle holders to place along their "nature trail" and will be inviting
community members to visit their campus and explore the walk. They also hosted an evening of entertainment to raise awareness and funds for the cause. Thank you to our students for making the children’s
dream a reality this year!

Men’s Baseball Make A Difference
Many efforts, both big and small, marked the 23rd annual Make A Difference Day. Across the county, millions of volunteers worked on thousands of projects. Each year on the fourth Saturday of October, millions
of Americans rally into action to improve the lives of others.
In the City of Poughkeepsie, 300 volunteers made a difference this past
Saturday. Forty homes on Thompson
Street received exterior makeovers,
thanks to Habitat for Humanity of
Dutchess County, United Way of Dutchess-Orange Region and our entire baseball
team.
According to Junior Nick McQuail, “It was a good opportunity for our team to come
together in an atmosphere that not only brought us closer as a team, but one that also
benefits the society we live in. Our team had a great time helping to make a difference in the city.”
So get out there and do your
